  • What to do during a 8 hour wait through the night?
    Apr 8, 2016
My parents arrive from London at 11.30pm into Termal 4 on Delta. They leave again for St Martin on another Delta filght at 8.30am the following morning (again from T4).. What on earth can they do for the 6 hours of waiting through the early hours (before/after security checks)? They are not confident with finding their way around outside of the airport, so will they be able to a) stay in the airport or b) sleep or c) flind a coffee shop open through the night? They're late 60s and their energy levels will not be the highest! Cheers in advance

There is a small cafe/coffee shop open 24 hours outside security in Terminal 4. That's where I recommend they spend the night. They will be able to go back through security at about 4:30 AM if they want.

  • 8 hr layover...

I will be arriving at JFK on China Eastern at 10:15 PM and connecting Delta flight is at 6:15 AM. I am traveling alone - is it safe to stay in the airport during layover? If so, where should I go to relax and read, etc? Thank you!

Yes, airports are very safe places to stay. Terminal 4 is the only terminal with seating outside security (you won't be able to go through security until about 4:30 AM).

Thank you for responding to my question!

  • St marrten=JFK==birmingham uk
    Mar 21, 2016
hello, I'm flying american airlines for both legs of my journey on one ticket from st marrten via JFK to Birmingham U.K. The airline has sold me a ticket with a 1hour 25min trasit time? if this enough to go through customs/ immigration and re check in? I won't take any hold luggage to save time.

With no checked baggage it's possible, but it's awfully difficult.

  • What to do with luggage during 12 hour layover
    Mar 20, 2016
Can anyone advise how early you can check in your luggage. We arrive from SJU at 11 am and leave international flight with LOT at 1030pm. Can we check in early, off load our baggage and leave airport during the layover period? is there any NY based half day trips or tours direct from JKF that we can use?

I'm not aware of any half day trips that leave directly from JFK. The LOT counter won't be open until at least mid-afternoon, possibly later.

  • Ideas for 21h layover
    Mar 20, 2016
We'll be arriving JFK from Jamaica at midnight, and have a flight to Norway at 09:55pm the next day. Any ideas as to how to get the most out of our time in NYC in the 21h? Where should we store our luggage?

There is a luggage storage business near Penn Station called Schwartz Luggage Storage. You can put your bags there. You might want to sleep though.

  • automatic luggage check-through?
    Feb 27, 2016
I'm flying from Seattle to Luxembourg via JFK and Heathrow and have a nearly 12 hour layover at JFK and of course wanted to visit Manhattan for 3-4 hours. Now my question is whether my luggage is checked through automatically to London because it was a domestic flght beforehand? Or will I have to go through Immigration again and take care of my luggage myself and check it in before boarding?

You do not go through US Customs after or a domestic flight or before departing on an international flight. As long as all flights are on the same reservation they will be transferred for you.

  • Enough time??
    Feb 26, 2016
Flying into JFK arriving at 4pm on AA. Taking AA (operating as Finnair) to Helsinki at 5:40pm. Do you think we have enough time in between flights? I don't know the gate numbers.

Yes, that should be plenty of time as long as your first flight is on-time.

    Thank you!

  • Two different terminals to switch within 1 hour 25 min
    Feb 21, 2016
I have an international flight from Cinci to Moscow through JFK. Arrive to terminal 4 at JFK and depart from Terminal 1. Your site says I will have to go through security check again. Is 1 hour 25 min enough to switch terminals and go though security check to be on time for my international flight to Moscow? Appreciate your help!

Yes, that should be enough time as long as your flight from Cincinnati is on-time.

  • Exit JFK during transit
    Feb 21, 2016
I plan to buy a ticket departing from Beijing to Chicago, with transit at JFK. I thought of leaving the airport when I arrive JFK, which means the ticket from JFK to Chicago will not be used. After a few days travelling in New York, I will travel by train from New York to Chicago. Then,I will be boarding at Chicago airport going back in Beijing. Will it affect my Chicago-Beijing flight if i were to ignore the JFK-Chicago flight? All the flights are operated by United Airlines. Thanks :)

Yes, if you ignore the JFK-Chicago flight the rest of your ticket will be cancelled - so you can't do that. Also, United doesn't fly to or from JFK.

I want to book vacation for my mon from Moscow to DR.There is a connection flight through NY. Is she allowed to go outside of the airport if she doesn't have any visas.

If she is a Russian citizen she will not be allowed to FLY on that routing without a US Transit Visa.

  • 12 hours layover... can you leave the airport
    Dec 30, 2015
My mom will be flying from Dom.Rep. to Spain, making a stop in NY ... (she has all her legal documents to enter the US) will she be able to leave the airport while she waits for her next flight? and she will be able to get her luggage? Thanks

She will have to claim her bags to go through US customs. Yes, once she clears customs she will be outside the secure area and free to go where she wants.

  • Long Layover options
    Dec 27, 2015
Hi, I am flying into JFK airport terminal 4 with emirates arriving at 8.40pm and then departing the next day at 8.55am with Tame C. A from Terminal 1. I do not wish to leave the airport but am concerned that their will be no amenities available at these hours? Is it possible to get a single pass for an airlines lounge? And am I best to stay in terminal 4 or 1 for the majority of the time?

When you clear US Customs you will be outside security. There are no lounges open overnight. Terminal 4 is the best terminal to spend the night in if you wish to spend the night at the airport.

  • Changing Itineraries after international flight
    Nov 17, 2015
Good morning, My husband and I will be returning from Manila. Our flight goes Manila to Beijing and Beijing to JFK via Air China then JFK to Charleston, SC via Jet Blue. Because of a change in circumstances, we now would rather fly in to Charlotte and I've found a cheap American Airlines flight that leaves with plenty of time for us to exit the terminal after Customs and re-check in with American. My question is, will we get our checked luggage back after we land in JFK so that we can exit the terminal and get to the domestic departures terminal for American? Will there be anything that prevents us from doing this? I appreciate the help very much!!

Yes, at JFK you will claim your bags to go through US Customs. After that you can rip the tags off your bag and go to Terminal 8 to check your bags with American.
