Because of the AA and BA codeshare, you will likely be able to re-check it in T7.

After going through customs you should be able to re-check your baggage with Delta, then take the Airtrain to T2 and go through security (you may have to pick up your boarding pass from Delta first). You should have plenty of time.

On arrival at T3, take the 'Airline Terminals Train' which serves all terminals outside of security (follow signs). As each airline has its own rules, check with your airline whether they will automatically transfer to your connecting flight or if you need to re-check-in your bags, particularly if you use 2 different airlines.

at JFK, LAX & SFO Delta flights are in Terminal 2 - meaning you need to take the 'Airline Terminals Train' to Terminal 4 (follow signs) and there go through security check before proceeding to your gate. Concourse A has gates A2-7, Concourse B gates B20-40. NOTE: First phase of major reconstruction of T4 opens with fanfare next Friday. However, it possible that the Delta Shuttle bus from T2 to T4, gate to gate (with no security check at T4) will already be in place. Either way you should be able to make your connection on time.

If your bags are checked through you won't have to do anything with them in JFK. If not you will have to leave the secure side and claim them, then take them to T4 and check them with Virgin Atlantic. You have over 3 hours so that is enough time to do all that.

OK, that's good to know. I doubt the bags will be checked through as the two flights were booked separately as part of separate trips LHR\JFK return and JFK\BUF return as we are going to niagara at the end of our NYC trip. I will ask at the airport when we check in at Buffalo on our return journey. Thanks for the advice.

No, on the non-secure side you'll want to use the Airtrain.

You will not have to change terminals, both flights will be in Terminal 5. Thus, if your first flight is on-time you should have enough time.

It'll be tight but it should be doable if your first flight is on-time. You need to take the airtrain to Terminal 1 from 2 or 3, then go to Alitalia to get your boarding pass, then go through security. Since Delta and Alitalia are both in SkyTeam, Delta may be able to get you a boarding pass in MCO if your tickets were bought on the same reservation.

I forgot to mention that we would be landing at JFK at 2245h, so if anyone knows how long it would take to re-check bag and go through security again at that time, that would be great!

What airlines are you flying? Normally that would be a very tight, almost impossible connection, but may be doable since it's so late at night.

American Airlines. The travel agent also advised against it so we've gone with another flight. Thank you so much for your input though!

Worst case scenario is probably about an hour but more likely 30-45 mins.
