  • Will my baggage be put on to my connecting flight for me?
    Nov 23, 2014

Next year I will be travelling alone to from London Heathrow UK to Bogota, Colombia via JFK New York. I am wondering whether my checked baggage will automatically be put on to my connecting flight to Bogota at JFK, or will I have to go through baggage reclaim and check it in again myself? I am keen to find out for definite before I go as this will be my first experience of a connecting flight! Many thanks!

If buying your 2 flights on one ticket, your bags will automatically be transferred to your connecting flight after you went through passport check, picked up your bags & went through customs clearance, then re-checked in your bags at JFK. Otherwise find out from your first airline if they will transfer to your second flight. (if not you would need to take your bags to the connecting terminal to check it in there). I suggest you open www.ifly.com/jfk, then click on 'Terminal Map' under QUICK LINKS and scroll down to the detailed text, for all the information you will need about JFK; if interested in Bogota Airport, open www.ifly.com/bog.

You will have to claim your bags to go through US Customs, whether you buy two separate tickets or buy one reservation.

Hi Zap..Im travelling from MUM to MEX via JFK on Emirates (and AeroMexico). My baggage has a through checkin as mentioned by Emirates. The tag is till Mexico. However, I wanted to know if baggage retrieval + customs is necessary in JFK. Bit confused on this. I have a 2.45 Hrs time between connections & terminals (Arrival in T4, Departure from T1).Please advise

Yes, you will have to claim your bags to go through US Customs in JFK. THen you will re-check them at the transfer desk when you exit customs.

Well, as the title states, I am planning to travel to USA on January For my outbound flight back to Europe, I am thinking about two flights SFCO --> JFK JFK --> MAD The connection in JFK is 2 hours Assuming no delays, should this be enough? Both are American Airlines flights, both deparing/landing Terminal 8 I dont need to clear any customs on outbound flights correct? Thanks a lot

Yes, that should be plenty of time. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

I will arrive at Terminal 1 by Air China and connect to JetBlue, where can I re-check in my baggages at Terminal 1?

forgot to say that I purchase the all tickets from the same agent and all transfers are supposed to label when I first check in.

You will re-check your bags at the transfer desk after you exit customs.

    Thanks a lot.

I am arriving on AA from Toronto at terminal 4 and have a connecting flight on Qatar Airways. Will my luggage be checked through from Toronto? only 2 hours to connect so wondering if I will need more?

AA does not use terminal 4. Please double check your airline. AA uses terminal 8. If you bought tickets together your bags will be checked through after you preclear u.s. Customs in Toronto. You have plenty of time

I am arriving on 02/03/2015 at JFK via flight AF 22 at 11:15 and departing to MSY via flight AF9272 at 14:00. Is the time enough to catch the connecting flight?

Yes. That is enough time your flight to New Orleans will depart from terminal 2 and be operated be Delta.

  • Grenada to New Delhi

Hi, I am flying from Grenada to New Delhi via JFK on 6th Dec 2014. Grenada to JFK is Caribbean Airlines reaching Terminal 4 JFK to New Delhi is Air India, again departing from Terminal 4 1. The stopover is for 2.5 hours. Is that enough? 2. Do I need to checkout the baggage at JFK and check-in again, since these are 2 different airlines? 3. Hopefully not, but just wanted to confirm if I need a Transit visa?

2.5 hours is really pushing the limit of what is possible for such a connection. Yes, you will have to claim your bags and re-check them. If you are a Grenadian or Indian citizen you need a transit visa.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I am an Indian citizen. Surprising that even for transfer within terminal 4, a transit visa is required! One more thing...Do they give transit visa on arrival, as it may not be possible for me to arrange for one, now!?

No, the u.s. Does not offer visa on arrival. You should have done more research before you booked your trip.

Hi ZAP, I am arriving on Jan 5th 2015 to JFK T4 from Madrid with Air Europa at 8:05 PM and I am connecting with American Airlines from T8 to Washington DCat 9:47pm. I bought the tickets separatedly so I would have to do a new check in and I have one big baggage with me. Would this be enough time to go through customs, change terminal and check in again to make the connection? Thanks for your help ZAP!

It's possible but difficult . You'll have to be at T8 45 minutes before departure

I'm flying into JFK Terminal 1 with Korean Air arriving 7.30pm and need to transfer to Terminal 5 for a flight to Boston with Jet Blue at 10.55pm. Can you please advise on how to transfer between terminals and check baggage back in for the Boston flight? Thank you

Take your bags with you on he AirTrain from T1 to T5. The procedure isn't difficult. You have plenty of time.

Carry-on luggage only, inbound from SYR, can we make it from T4 to T8 in 45 minutes?

Yes, as long as your first flight is on-time and you check in for your second flight online.

Also, no flights from SYR arrive in T2. If you're flying delta connection you will arrive in T2

Sorry you will arrive in T2 not T4

Thanks. Yes, we're flying in on Delta. (the itinerary says T4... but I believe you!) So T2 to T8 (outbound on AA) in 45 min. We'll be checked in and boarding passes in hand!

I am flying in from Prague, arriving at JFK at 4:35. The only connecting flight to Phoenix is at 6:45. Is this enough time to clear customs and change flights?

Yes, that should be enough time if tickets are purchased together.

  • Terminal 4 to Terminal 8 in 2hours?

Hello everyone! I have booked tickets for a work associate's return journey to Germany, flying LAX>JFK>BERLIN. She is travelling on an ESTA. Her Virgin America flight from LA arrives at JFK T4 @ 3:50pm and her flight to Berlin departs at 5:50pm (air berlin). I have been told that because her flight into JFK is domestic she will not have to go through immigration and customs, but can continue from T4 to T8 (where the AirBerlin counter is) where she can check her bag? Does anyone know if this is correct? I don't know the procedures for domestic US flights for a non US citizen at all. Will 2 hours will be enough? All help is much appreciated!

The procedure for foreigners flying on domestic flights is the same as US Citizens. 2 hours should be enough time to collect her bags, take the Airtrain to T8 and re-check and go through security. However, it does not leave much buffer if her flight to New York is late.

Thanks so much ! That is good news!

Looking at booking a flight which would arrive in T2 with connecting flight leaving from T4. Only 1 hour for the connection. Is that enough time?

Yes, that should be enough time. Delta has a shuttle bus that runs between the two terminals inside security.

  • Arriving JFK Terminal 4, Departing 5

Hello! Departing Abu Dhabi on Etihad, arriving in terminal 4 and departing for Denver from terminal 5. All flights booked through Etihad, although JFK-DEN is a Jetblue codeshare. In Abu Dhabi you clear US customs there. Will I have to get my bags in NY and take with me to terminal 5? Or do I just go through customs and drop the bags again? Is there a way to go from terminal 4 to 5 and stay within security? Or will I have to go through security again when I reach terminal 5?

Since you pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Abu Dhabi and you purchased your tickets together, your bags will be sent straight through to Denver. All you have to do in JFK is take the AirTrain from T4 to T5, get your Jetblue boarding pass if you don't already have it, and go through security.

We arrive Sunday 21December at 8.15pm from CDG at T8 and have 1h45 to catch the plane to EZE also on T8. Do we have to clear customs and immigration? And is this enough time? I suppose that we will be ok because arrival/departure are on T8 and we dont have to move to other terminals, but i was wondering still because it will be on a Sunday.

Yes, you will have to go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then go up to the departure level and through security. You have enough time. Sunday isn't really any busier than any other day.

my bags can not be labbeled to EZE directly from CDG on? Both flight are AA

Your bags will be labelled to EZE, but you still have to claim them to go through US Customs in JFK.
