When reach JFK on AA flight and need to transfer within same T8 from gate 42 to 31D. Will 45mins be enough? Do we need to claim check-in luggage during the transit? Do we need to go thru custom?

All you need to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You don't have to do anything with your bags. That's enough time if your first flight is on-time. You will go through Canadian Immigration and Customs when you get to Toronto.

    Hi Zap, Thanks :)

    Arriving AA at JFK 21;00 at T8. Connecting flight same ticket BA, Terminal 7 AT 00.05. After clearing security in T8 I understand we claim bags. Do we take our own bags to T7 or can they be re-checked in T8? If not what is the re-check in process at T8- is there a transfer desk? Will transfer time be enough? Thanks.;

Is your AA flight into JFK International or Domestic? That determines the procedure. I can't answer your questions without knowing that.

    International to international

OK, Yes, you will arrive in Terminal 8, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk if they are tagged through to your final destination (if you bought all your tickets together they will be). Then you will exit T8, take the AirTrain one stop to T7 and go through security and to your departure gate.

If you purchased two separate tickets you will have to take your bags on the AirTrain with you to T7.

    Very clear, thank you

We have to fly from Tel Aviv to Toronto and connect at JFK. I know you have to claim bags and recheck them when going to US destination. But do we also have to do that when connecting at JFK going to Canada?

    Yes, you do.

Arriving in terminal 5 (Jetblue) with a connecting flight to Orlando (also terminal 5 Jetblue). Layover is 35 minutes. Have never done a connecting flight before, what can I expect?

All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You will have enough time if your first flight is on-time but delays at JFK are unfortunately common. If you miss your connection you will be rebooked on the next flight to Orlando.

  • connection on time with terminal transfer?

We're flying from Italy to LA, 1 scale at JKF. Arriving at JFK at 2.10pm Terminal 1 with Alitalia, connecting flight to LA at 4.30 from Terminal 4 with Delta. Do we make it on time? Baggage should be direct Milan-LA so we don't have to to claim baggage and check in again. Do we make it through customs and all in just two hours and a half? Thanks!

You will arrive in T1, go through US Immigration CLAIM YOUR BAGS, go through US customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk. YOU HAVE TO CLAIM YOUR BAGS TO GO THROUGH US CUSTOMS, even though they are tagged to LAX. Then you will take the AirTrain from T1 to T4 and go through security and to your departure gate. You should have enough time if your Alitalia flight is on-time.

I would be arriving on EK203 Emirates from Dubai at 7.45am, Terminal 4 and departing at 10am EK6767 Emirates Carrier Operated by Jetblue from Terminal 5. With 1 check in luggage. Would I have sufficient time? Or should I change my connecting flight to a later time?

Yes, that should be enough time. You will arrive in T4, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then take the AirTrain from T4 to T5, get your JetBlue boarding pass if you don't already have it, and go through security and to your departure gate.

  • el al to virgin on tuesday morning; time to meet someone?

My daughter flies in at 6 a.m on a Tuesday. She has a 9:15 am flight on Virgin America to LA. Can her grandmother meet her in between? I assume she has to claim her bags once out of customs and then get them to the virgin ticket counter correct to check in? will there be time? Where is best place for her grandmother to meet her? Baggage claim after she arrives fro customs? How long will it take for her to get through customs.

Yes, her grandmother could meet her at the exit of customs. It will probably take her 45 minutes or so to get out of customs.

We fly from UK and arrive JFK at 12.55. We needs to catch connecting plane to Orlando at 14.15. is 1 hour and 20 minutes long enough to reclaim bags and recheck in to next flight?

What airline or airlines are you flying? Were all tickets purchased together? Normally I recommend at least 90 minutes, preferably 2 hours.

American airlines and tickets bought together.

Then you will have a chance but this is still a difficult connection.

Thanks for the info. I'll try to get flights changed.

  • Terminal 4 to Terminal 7 on a Saturday

We arrive JFK on a Saturday through terminal 4 (probably) on Delta at 2:37 pm and depart through terminal 7 on British Airways at 6:40 pm. I know we have to go through security at terminal 7. We will have only carryon baggage, no checked. Will that be enough time to make our departure in terminal 7? Delta's flight schedules for this flight have changed twice since booking and arrival times into JFK are getting later each time. I'm concerned that they will change again before our trip date. What would be the minimum amount of time to make these connections should Delta change its flight schedule again? Thanks.

You should have plenty of time. I'd say since you're not checking bags it would be possible to make this transfer in slightly under 2 hours, maybe 90 minutes, assuming your Delta flight is domestic.

Thank you ZAP. I appreciate your information. Looks like we will be fine. It's a domestic flight.

  • LAX to ZRH connecting in JFK

Arriving from LAX on Delta at 4:12pm, departing to ZRH on Swiss at 6:20pm. Separate tickets, both First/Business class. Looks like arrival and departure both from T4. 1. Do I have to collect luggage? 2. If yes (likely, as separate tickets), is there enough time for connection/security?

Yes, you will have to collect your bags. You should have enough time as long as your first flight is on-time

Thanks a lot, ZAP! What's a realistic minimal connection - without rushing around? Should I book for a connecting flight out of JFK at around 9pm?

2 hours is what I think would be the minimum time for that connection, so you're a little over it.

    That is barely enough time.

I am a US citizen landing in Terminal 8 internationally. I have an 8 hour layover and then will continue on a domestic flight to Seattle. Will I be able to leave the airport?

After you clear customs and re-check your bags at the transfer desk, you will be outside the secure area and free to go where you want. However, note that it's over an hour on the train each way to anything worth seeing.

Hi, we will be arriving at JFK T4 from LHR on flight V003 at 12.45pm, we leave for Tampa at 14.55 from T2 on a Delta flight, will that be enough time? Do we go through immigration etc and do we have to collect bags etc. Thanks

You will arrive in T4, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk. Then check the screens. Your flight to Tampa may depart from T4. If it departs from T4, then go through security. If it departs from T2, then take the Airtrain to T2 and go through security there.

  • Enough time for baggage and change

Flying through JFK on way from PIT to MXP. Is one and a half hours leaving PIT enough time to transfer to our plane to MXP? Also wondering if luggage will have to be rechecked or will have enough time to transfer as we are flying Delta and their codeshare Alithalia booked all on one trip ticket?

Since you just booked one ticket, you won't have to do anything with your baggage. All you have to do is take the AirTrain from your arrival terminal (T2 or T4) to T1 and go through security.

Hello, I reach JFK at 1.17 pm through KLM from Amsterdam. I want to book my next flight - Delta airlines to Rochester at 3.45 pm. Is this enough time to make the flight or should I book the 7pm flight to be on safer side?

    That should be enough time.

It may not be enough time... You will have to go through immigration and customs when you arrive from Amsterdam. Immigration/luggage area can take anywhere from 45min to a couple hours, depending on how busy it gets. And then you'll need to get to the domestic terminal (air train is pretty easy and fast), and check in, check luggage and go through security for the domestic flight. Go with the later flight - always better to wait a bit longer than to miss a flight and end up stranded :)

Thank you ZAP and Irene, I'm going to book the later flight just to be on the safer side. I guess Im going to have to wait for 6 hours though. oh well. :)
