  • Security at JFK for international transfer - duty free

Hi I am flying in JFK from Jamaica tomorrow afternoon with Delta to then transfer onto a London bound flight with Delta again. Could someone tell me the rules regarding duty free. I wish to take two bottles of rum with me from Jamaica but unsure whether this will cause issues in JFK when passing through security to catch my London flight. Thanks.

I am flying from Charlotte,NC and have connecting via China Airline on terminal 8. How do I get to terminal 8 from terminal 1 without using the train. I have Parkinson's and riding train is hard for me.

You cannot get between those terminals without the train. If you need help riding the train, you can request wheelchair assistance from your airlines.

    Thank you

Returning from Madrid on an American Airlines flight at 1:10PM and then we have a 2:59pm flight on Jet Blue. I believe we will have to recheck baggage as they don't have any sort of agreement. Is this doable or should I pay the extra $150 to change to a later flight?

It's makeable, It's tough though. I obviously wouldn't have booked it in the first place, but seeing as you have, i would probably try to make it rather than paying to rebook.

Will I be able to recheck the bag without going through security? The bags likely wont be tagged all the way to our final destination. Will I be able to do this after customs?

No, you cannot. When you clear customs you will be outside security and Terminal 8 and Terminal 5 are not connected inside security anyway. You will have to take the bags to the JetBlue counter in Terminal 5 to re-check them.

Thanks for your help. I pushed back the flight. The $120 was worth the peace of mind of not missing the flight and not having to run around an unfamiliar airport. Thanks again for sharing your expertise.

Hi, Im flying form London to JFK with AA on the 21th of November. We arrived in JFK at 1:40 pm. My connection flight is from JFK to San Juan, Puerto Rico. My AA flight is at 3.35 pm. Is this good on time? should i make it?

Yes, that should be enough time. You will arrive in Terminal 8, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then go through security and to your departure gate which will also be in Terminal 8.

  • Priority for Business Class

I've got an hour and 44 minutes to connect from my jetBlue flight from Orlando onto my Etihad flight to Abu Dhabi departing from terminal 4. I'll be flying Business Class on my Etihad flight. Is there any priority that is provided in JFK for business class passengers? and any fast track security?

Wow, that will be a very difficult connection. You should have priortity security in JFK by flying Business class. However, you'll still have to get from T5 where you arrive to T4, through security, and to your departure gate. You will also have to already have your Etihad boarding pass in-hand.

What do you think should I do? Can Etihad arrange for a ground staff in New York to get me through?

There's nothing they can do if your JetBlue flight is late other than book you on the flight the next day.

  • short cut immigration for connecting flights

Recently had a connecting flight thru JFK, arriving from Nice and departing for Phoenix. Discovered that if your flight connection is inside 3 hours there's q 'Quick Connection' service. Watch out for the person holding up the sign in the immigration area and show your ticket/boarding pass. They will put you at the front of the queue. Also, it took a long time to get through security for connecting flight so we just made it in 2 hours.

I assume this was Delta in Terminal 4?

  • T1 to T8 2 Hour 10 Minute Layover

I'm returning from Kenya into JFK T1 at 11:15am on January 10th. I have a connecting flight to CLT at 1:26pm. I'll have no checked bags. Do I have enough time to go through customs and change terminals?

Forgot to mention that the flight to Charlotte leaves from Terminal 8

Yes, that should be enough time. You will take the AirTrain from T1 to T8. You can check in for your US Airways flight online before you leave Kenya.

    Thank you for your help!

I have a flight coming into JFK at 4.30am in Terminal 4. Am thinking of book a flight out of JFK at 8.55am at Terminal 1. Is it advisable? Will there be enough time to land, clear customs, collect bag, leave terminal 4, go to terminal 1, check in, enter departure hall and catch my next flight. I heard the customs clearance is bad in JFK. How long will i need to go from Terminal 4 Arrival to Terminal 1 Departure, and how? Thanks in advance!

That should be plenty of time. It won't be crowded at 430 AM. You get from T4 to T1 using the AirTrain. It only takes 10-15 minutes.

  • connecting from CX to Jetblue

I arrive into JFK at 0600 with Cathay Pacific. I have a flight at 0755 with Jetblue to IAD. I am not American, traveling with an elderly mother. Would i have enough time to make the connection?

Yes, I think that should be enough time. You will arrive in Terminal 7, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs. if you purchased your tickets together and your bags are tagged through to IAD you can re-check at the transfer desk in T7, then take the Airtrain to T5 and go through security. If you bought separate tickets you will have to take your bags with you on the AirTrain. There won't be many arrivals into T7 that early in the morning.

HI thanks for the info! The tickets are bought separately because they don't belong to the same alliance. So that means I have to take them out, bring them to T5 and check back in? How long does the journey between terminals take?

Btw I have another flight option that arrives at 1200, and connects with Delta at 1457. That is obviously more time in between. My mom will be in a wheelchair...Would you say that is a better option? Thanks in advance

Hello, I am flying Delta from Boston to Paris via JFK, with checked in luggage. Is 1h30m enough to get my connection to Paris? Many thanks!

Yes, that should be enough time. All you have to do is take the Delta shuttle bus from T2 where you will arrive to T4 where you will depart.

I responded to your other post. I think you have enough time.

Arriving on Delta from Rome and Departing to Tampa. We have 1 Hour and 45 minutes between arrival and departure. Is that enough time to clear customs and get to our Terminal?

Yes, that should be enough time. You will arrive in Terminal 4 and depart from Terminal 2. After you re-check your bags, you can either proceed to security in Terminal 4 and then take the shuttle to Terminal 2, or you can take the AirTrain to Terminal 2 and go through security there.

Thank you for your response. We are flying in and out on Delta so I am assuming we will not be too time pressured.

Hi! We are an Italian party (18 teenagers+ 2 teachers). We're flying with Delta from Venice to Seattle next April. We'll have checked bags. We have 2 hours 10 min. for the connection. Is that enough time for immigration, clear customs and move from T4 to T2 ?

Yes, that should be enough time. Note that Delta flights to Seattle leave from T4, so you won't have to change terminals.

Hi. Im flying form Charleston to JFK on the 5th of December. My flight time is from 5pm to 7pm. My connection flight is from JFK to OSLO, Norway. My Norwegian flight is at 9.30pm. is this good on time? should i make it?

That should be enough time. If you have checked baggage you will have to claim it from your first airline and take it on the airtrain to Norwegian check-in counter in Terminal 1 to re-check.

Thank you! Do you have any idea which terminal Jet blue uses? I hope i can make it!

your Jetblue flight will arrive in Terminal 5.

My domestic flight with Virgin America lands at 7:05pm. My international flight with Alitalia 605 leaves at 8:35PM. Someone with knowledge please suggest.

I'm guessing you bought tickets separately - it will be very difficult for you to make this if you have checked bags as you will have to claim them from Virgin America in T4 and take them on the AirTrain to T1 to check with Alitalia. It will be hard for you to get there before the checked bag cutoff. If you don't have checked bags, it might be possible.

Thanks. We do not have checked bags. Do you know by any chance if the domestic and international terminals are within walking distance? And how long it takes to go from the domestic to international terminals?

JFK has 6 terminals, 4 of which handle international flights. You will arrive in Terminal 4 and depart from Terminal 1. You cannot walk between terminals. You have to take the AirTrain. It will take you about 20 minutes to get between terminals.

Thank you for your quick response!! We appreciate it!
