  • Arrive in JFK, Connection in LGA - doable?
    Jan 15, 2017

We have a flight into JFK from LHR in July on BA. It is scheduled to land at 3:50PM. I used miles for this flight. Now I need to get a ticket to fly home from NYC. It looks like JFK is pricey for domestic flights, LGA is much more reasonably priced. Question: Is it doable to fly into JFK at 350pm and catch a flight from LGA at 750PM? That gives us 5 hours. Can we check in our baggage at JFK, or will we need to go through customs, get our luggage, transfer to LGA and check luggage in?

Yes, that should be possible - note however, that it's 4 hours, not 5. No, you cannot check your baggage in JFK. You will have to take it with you to LGA.

Thanks ZAP. You are correct it's 4 not 5 hours. Would you recommend that connection?

Yeah, you can probably make it, but also be aware that you will be going to LaGuardia at Rush Hour, that it will cost $30-$40 and that there is currently construction at LaGuardia, messing up traffic near it. If the difference in flight costs is less than $50 I wouldn't bother trying to change airports.

the price difference in pricing is about $175-200 per person; there are 4 of us. I am ok with hiring a shuttle or taxi and avoid any public transportation.

Also, we just got back from visiting NYC during the NYE week. We flew into LGA, but out of EWR. LGA construction is something.

Hi, I am flying from Dublin to Durham, NC via JFK terminal 5. I have booked one ticket for whole flight from Dublin to Durham. Could you please advise if I will need to claim my bags, undergo immigration after arrival to JFK T5? I have layover time of 1h50m between flights but I hope I will be able to stay in secure zone.

You pre-clar US Immigration and Customs in Dublin. All you have to do in JFK is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time.

Hi, I am arriving at Terminal 8 from Alaska Airlines at 4:07 pm and has another flight in Terminal 1 departing at 7:20 pm (Aeroflot Airlines). It's two separate registrations and I was wondering whether 3 hours is enough for transfer between domestic T8 to international T1 flights. Thank you for the answer!

Yes, that should be enough time if the Alaska flight is on-time.

Hi, I'm travelling from Glasgow to San Francisco via New York with Delta Airlines. We have a layover time of 1hr30mins between flights. Both flights will use Terminal 4. Will this be enough time? Will I need to clear customs at JFK or at the airport in SanFrancisco? Many thanks

In JFK you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, go through security and to your departure gate. You have just enough time if everything goes smoothly.

  • Do we have enough time

We are flying in tomorrow from MSP and arrive in JFK on Delta at 6:40pm and then we are on a flight on Delta to San Juan that leaves at 7:30pm. So we have a 50 minute window is that enough time? If so what is the best way of doing this?

That is possible. You just have to go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. If you arrive in T4 and depart from T2 or vise-versa, Delta runs a shuttle between them inside security, but it does make it more difficult.

Hello. What is the minimum connecting time in JFK for Delta to Egypt Air?

    I wouldn't recommend less than 3 hours.

We're flying on delta from Dublin to JFK. We have approximately 2 1/2 hours to get to our connnecting flight on jet blue. Will we have to go through customs again even though we're flying out of Dublin ? And will we make our connecting flight?

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Dublin. All you have to do in JFK is claim your bags, take them on the AirTrain to Terminal 5, re-check them with Jetblue and go through security. You should have enough time.

We're arriving at JFK terminal 7 (BA) from LHR, connecting to AA at terminal 8. I assume we do immigration and customs at terminal 7 then hand our bags back there, before getting the airtrain round to terminal 8 and going back through security there? We have 2 hours 50 so should be plenty of time? Also I assume Airtrain runs in terminal order, ie we have one stop from 7 to 8, or does it run the other way and we'll have a trip around the airport? Would terminal 7 to 8 be walkable and if so, would we need to go through security.

Yes, you have the procedure correct. You have enough time. The AirTrain runs both ways. You have to go through security in T8 regardless.

  • Enough time to make international flight?

My husband and I will be flying from Denver to JFK and taking a connecting flight to Barcelona - both legs on Delta. Our layover is 2.5 hours. Is this enough time to make the connection? Do we have to collect our bags and recheck them? Thank you!

Yes, that is enough time. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate, nothing with your bags. If you arrive in Terminal 2, Delta runs a shuttle inside security to Terminal 4 where you depart.

  • Will we have enough time SLC - JFK

On 19AUG our JFK - LON Virgin VS5403 flight departs 22:30 (operated by Delta). I need to book separately our internal flight from SLC - JFK. They have two flights arrive JFK 15:03 (too early!) or 20:26. Will we have enough time if we arrive JFK 20:26? Do we need to collect our baggage and clear customs whilst transit?

There is no US Customs when leaving the US. the 20:26 arrival is enough time, especially if you can get your bags checked through to London. Note however, that the schedule will almost definitely change between now and August.

I've already booked my LON-JFK flight with Virgin. How do I get my bags checked through direct to LON from SLC when I book the SLC-JFK leg? Also I'm concerned you say it's likely the schedule will change between now and August... how does this work if I book now (to secure price and availability - 4 travellers) and the scheduled is changed such that I'll miss my JFK-LON connection! Thanks!

If the schedule is changed so much you would miss your connection, you are entitled to a refund on the SLC-JFK flight and will have to find a different way to JFK and book it. If you show your second Delta confirmation to London to the Delta check-in agent in Salt Lake City, they should be able to check your bags through to London.

I am flying from El Salvador to JFK, it supposed to arrive at 9 pm but most of the times the flight is delayed AV 570 and have the other to Taipei at 00:20, in the case is delay one hour my first flight, do I have enough time to make the connection?

Is it one reservation or two separate reservations?

It's the same reservation, with vayama

    Is one reservation

Then that should be enough time. Yes, you would probably still make it even if the first flight was delayed an hour.

Thanks for your answer, also I want to know, Do I need to clear immigration and customs and then recheck my baggages?

    Yes, you do.

We are arriving into JFK terminal 8 from Edinburgh on American Airlines at 12:45pm then flying to Nashville from the same terminal at 14.55pm. Second flight American Airlines operated be Envoy Air as American Eagle. Will this be enough time? Tickets under the one booking. Will we need to collect our bags in JFK or will they go straight through to Nashville?

Yes, that is enough time. Yes, you have to go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go through security and to your departure gate.

Thank you very much for your prompt response much appreciated.

British Citizen on Flight from Rochester NY to LHR via JFK and Amsterdam. There is only a 1 hr time between flight arriving at JFK and flight departing JFK for Amsterdam. Is this enough time to get through security checks and make my connecting flight? Its the same terminal and I have a checked bag. Airline is KLM partnered with Delta? Would appreciate a response. Thanks

There are no security checks since both flights are in Terminal 4. You just have to walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time.

Thank you very much for the information.

Hello! I have an international flight from TPE to JFK arriving at 7:15pm terminal 4. Im looking at a flight that leaves JFK to BOS at 9:20pm terminal 8. From what Ive been told, I have to claim my bags and recheck it before my second flight. Is this too much of a time crunch? -Concerned flyer

Yes, I don't think that's possible. Just spend the night in New York and fly or take the train to Boston the next day.
