  • Mr. ZAP, please assist! Many thanks!

Hi. I need help and I'm a bit terrified now with this travel arrangement I have. Will be flying soon in July. Pls note I am a citizen of another country and hold Multiple entry tourist visa for both Canada and US. Below is my itinerary. My country-JFK-YVR-JFK-YYZ-JFK-Back to my country I had a round trip ticket from my country to NY of course and will stay there for 3 days only. After my 3-day stay in NY, will fly to Vancouver departing JFK via Cathay Pacific. My concern starts here. A.Via Cathay, Ill be departing from YVR at 22.50 on jul 23 thu going back to JFK NY, arriving in at 7am jul 24 fri. 1) will there still be US pre clearance services at that time? Given my YVR departure sked? Is it open 24 hrs? 2) As this is my first fly with this type of arrangement, pls advise the steps/procedures from checking in to security to custom, etc with or without Preclearance. 3) Upon my JFK arrival, will I undergo another security check and interview with the officer? B. Using a separate ticket on my way to Toronto. Via TAM, upon my arrival in Jfk on a very SAME DAY, departing at 11am going to Toronto with 4 hours for preparation: 4) will that be enough time for me to check in again, etc given i need to transfer to T8 from T7? Do I need to exit the airport to access T8 via airtrain or no need? 5) do i have to go through Security checks again and US customs, etc? If you could kindly tell me the steps for this one too going to YYZ from JFK? 6) Lastly, will the officer not questioned me why I need to leave US again when I just arrived US from YVR? If only flight directly from YVR-YYZ is not pricey, then I should have booked that. Any opinion will do. Thank you very much!

The Cathay flight from Vancouver does not use preclearance. You will arrive in Terminal 7, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, and go through US Customs. 4 hours should be plenty of time for your transfer. The Airtrain is outside security, but you will be outside security when you clear customs in T7. You will go through security after you check in for your TAM flight. There is no US exit customs, so no US officer will question you when you are leaving. You will o through Canadian Immigration and Customs when you arrive in Toronto. On your return, also be aware that TAM does not use pre-clearance either. So you will have to go through US Immigration and customs before flying back to your home country in JFK.

Thanks so much ZAP! You're a heavent sent! Gteatly appreciated it. on my fligjt back to JFK, its a separate ticket. This time it's air canada? will there be pre clearance? if there is about how many hours should I be in the airport befire my departure? thank you once again. -Kath

Oh, if you are flying Air Canada back to JFK from YYZ then you will go through preclearance in YYZ. You should get to YYZ at least 2 hours before your flight because of this.

When i exit US going to either Yvr or yyz, will the immigration do a stamp on my passport? And no more interview? regards, Lizzie

  • Terminal 5 to terminal 4
    Jun 28, 2015
My daughter is arriving on a Jet Blue flight in terminal 5 from PBI. She is checking 1 bag. She then is taking a Lufthansa flight from terminal 4. How does she get from terminal 5to4 and will she have to go back through security?

She takes the AirTrain between terminals, and yes, she will have to go through security in Terminal 4.

    Thank you!

I have an hour layover between my flights (both Delta). I arrive in Terminal 4 and depart in Terminal 2, will there be enough time for me to move between terminals? Should I take the Delta shuttle?

Yes, take the shuttle. Yes, that should be enough time if your first flight is on-time and domestic/precleared. Also double check on the monitors or the delta app once you arrive in JFK to ensure you actually have to go to T2.

We will be arriving at JFK at 4 PM. My connection to SFO leaves at 6 PM. Will we have enough time to retrieve our checked bags and go through customs?

Assuming both flights were purchased on the same reservation, yes, that is enough time.

Both flights are on the same reservation with KLM. Does that mean that the airline will hold the outbound SFO flight if the inbound JFK flight is delayed?

No, airlines don't hold flights. It means you will be put on the next available flight from SFO. Note that both of your flights will be operated by Delta.

  • Flying from Dublin to Tampa via JFK
    Jun 26, 2015
Aer Lingus is advertising the following flight El109 from Dublin to Tampa going through JFK arriving in terminal 5 at 18.30, my flight to Tampa, El225, goes at 19.30 with Jet Blue which is also from terminal 5. I will be going through US Customs in Dublin. The full flight will be booked through Aer Lingus. Is this possible or should I look at another option?

That's definitely possible. All you will have to do in JFK is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

I assume that it would be unlikely that my hold luggage would transfer in that short time

That's an incorrect assumption. An hour is not a short time to connect a bag at all. Especially within the same terminal.

Thank you so much for your information, I am really impressed with your very prompt and positive replies to my queries

  • Delta BNA-JFK to Aer Lingus JFK-DUB
    Jun 25, 2015
I booked my flights separately. Delta BNA-JFK arrives at 10:30 am and Aer Lingus departs at 12:00, I don't have any checked bags, just a carry on. I don't have gate or terminal numbers for my Delta flight arrival but Aer Lingus looks like it is leaving from terminal 5. I'm concerned about having enough time between flights to make my terminal connection, because Aer Lingus just sent me a confirmation email for my flight and it says check in closes 75 minutes before departure.. Do I have enough time? Will I have to go through security again?

BNA-JFK will probably arrive in Terminal 4. Check in online for your Aer Lingus flight if you can. You will have to take the Airtrain from T4 to T5 and go through security.

    Thank you!

Sorry, I thought of another question.. I forgot to put in that my flight on Aer Lingus is international (JFK-DUB), does that change anything as far as making my connection on time? I am just worried about their 75 minute check-in cut off, but if I can check-in on my phone or online then I should just have to deal with security, right? Thanks again!

Correct, if you are able to check in online then you will just have to go through security. There is no US Customs when leaving the US.

I am flying from Barcelona to JFK and then on to San Diego with the same airline and at the same terminal 8. What is the procedure please? Do I go through immigration and claim my bags in JFK or are my bags sent through to the onward flight??? Thank you

At JFK you will go through US Immigration, claim your baggage, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go up to the departure level and through security.

  • Frankfurt > JFK > LAS - 3h45 layover enough ?
    Jun 25, 2015
Hello, i'm going to be coming into JFK Terminal 4 from Frankfurt by a Lufthansa flight, arriving at 13h35 and i have to catch a flight at 17h to LAS operated by AA, do i have enough time to clear immigration, claim and recheck my luggage and eventually change terminals ? assuming there a slight delay in arrival ?

That should be enough time. You will take your baggage with you on the AirTrain from T4 to T8 after clearing Customs.

  • Terminal 4
    Jun 24, 2015
My son is arriving JFK terminal 4 from Amsterdam at 11.41 on the 26th. He will then go to Orlando MCO at 1.29, from what I found also terminal 4. Does he need to go through customs or will that be in Orlando since both are terminal 4? Will it be enough time? Any other hints, he is only 15 and travelling on a EU passport. The tickets are bought at the same time via an agency and I thonk both are Delta or partners. Thanks in advance.

In JFK he will go through US Immigration, claim his bags, go through US Customs, re-check his bags at the recheck desk immediately after customs, then go up to the departure level, through security and to his departure gate. He has enough time, but not much to spare.

  • Connection T4 and t2
    Jun 24, 2015
Hi iam arriving to terminal 4 then I have to change the plane in terminal 2, I would like to know if it is possible to walk , or is better to take the shutle, or take the internal airtrain. thanks

Take the shuttle unless your arrival into Terminal 4 is an international flight, then take the AirTrain. It's more or less impossible to walk.

Thanks a lot, yes the flight is international one, it is a Delta flight that arrives from Rome then I have to take the air for Salt Lake, I have seen that Delta has its Shutle Buses, I wonder if I have to pass by the passport controls if I take the shutle Buses. because I have seen that buses departures near to the arrival of the plane.

You will arrive in Terminal 4, go through US Immigration, claim your baggage, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk. At that point you will be outside security in the lower level of Terminal 4. You can either take the AirTrain to Terminal 2 and go through security there or go through security in Terminal 4 and take the AirTrain to Terminal 2. I recommend taking the AirTrain. Also, be sure to check the monitors or delta.com - your flight to SLC may depart from Terminal 4.

I booked separate flight from Tampa landing JFK at 12:10pm connect with flight to Paris at 2:10. Will inhave enough to time to get TPA bags and make it through customs?

You do not go through US Customs when leaving the US. What airlines are you flying?

  • Is 50 minutes enough layover time.
    Jun 23, 2015
Hi, I am flying from Columbus, OH to Madrid via JFK. I only have 50 minute layover time, will this be enough time?

What airline? Tickets bought together or separately?

It's booked altogether as one ticket with Delta. Or I can book with Air France.

Yes, that would be enough time but not leave much time to spare. All you will have to do in JFK is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. both likely in Terminal 4.

  • Enough layover time
    Jun 22, 2015
I arrive into JFK at 6:51 P.M. on Delta and have an outbound flight on Iberia to Madrid at 8:55 P.M. Do I have enough time to make this flight with checked luggage?

Were your tickets bought on the same reservation or separate reservations. If the same reservation it's enough time. You just have to take the AirTrain from T4 or T2 where you will arrive to T7, get your Iberia boarding pass if you don't already have it. If you bought two separate itineraries you will have to collect your baggage from Delta first and then bring it to the Iberia check-in counter. In that case you barely have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

Yes separate reservations. Initially had 3.5 hours layover but woke up to 1.5 hour delay. Any tips to help us make our outbound would be appreciated! We have business class if that helps the procedure at all...

Yes, that helps a bit, just go as quickly as you can and hope that your flight makes up some of the delay.

  • Enough time for Int'l Connection to Turkey?
    Jun 22, 2015
I'm flying Delta from DCA to JFK at 2:05PM, landing at JFK at 3:42PM. My flight to Turkey (same airline) leaves JFK at 5:08PM. That gives me a 1 hour and 26 minute connection time. Is that enough?

Yes, that should be plenty of time. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, both in Terminal 4.

  • Canada to San diego, Layover in JFK
    Jun 22, 2015
Hello, I am leaving from Montréal(Canada) and I have a layover in JFK (layover is 1 hour 40 minutes) then my next flight is to go to San diego. Is that enough time? Do i have to go thru customs again and security? Do i have to pick up my bag and stuff again? Or is it sent right to San diego? Thank you!

Assuming both tickets were purchased together and are on the same airline, you will go through US Immigration and Customs in Montreal. All you have to do in JFK is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You don't have to do anything with your baggage. You have plenty of time.

Yes they are both purchased together! Thank you! And what is the fastest way to go to T2 from T4?

Delta runs a shuttle bus inside security between T2 and T4 if you need it (you may not).

Ok! And how often is that bus comes to the T4 gate?

    They're almost constant.
