i'm coming from Moscow Sheremetyevo, SVO airport to San Diego Lindbergh International, SAN airport. But my connection flight is through John F Kennedy International airport. I have 2 hours. Can i make on time to my flight to San diego? how long it takes to go though 1T to 2T? Do i need to go to customs?

I'm assuming you are flying Aeroflot from SVO to JFK and Delta to San Diego and booked your tickets on a single reservation. If so you will arrive in Terminal 1 where you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, and then go through US Customs, then re-check your bags. You will then take the AirTrain/Air Terminals Train from T1 to T2 (if your flight to San Diego's Delta flight number starts with 2 or T4 (if it starts with 4) and then go through security and to your gate. You will have to hope your flight from Moscow is on-time and hurry, you will barely have enough time.

how fast does it takes to re-check my bags? when i will claim my bag where i need to go to re-check them? i hope i will make on time

You will claim them between clearing immigration and clearing customs. The re-check desk will be after you exit customs. There will be ample signage. Time to do it will depend how crowded it is, I can't really estimate exactly.

  • Short connection from Delta to Alitalia
    Dec 28, 2013

A group of 27 of us will arrive at terminal 2 at JFK on a Delta flight from MSP. We are connecting with an Alitalia flight that leaves from terminal 1. We have only 90 minutes layover. Our bags will have been checked all the way through to Tel Aviv but I am wondering how long it takes to get from T2 to T1.

You will have to hope your first flight is on-time and hurry. It will probably take about a half hour to 45 minutes to take the AirTrain/Air Terminals Train to T1 and go through security.

Thanks for this info. With a group, what would be the chances of Alitatia holding the flight for us?

It's possible, there's no clear and public policies on when flights are held and when they are not. It also depends how late your inbound flight is (if it is). If it's clear you won't be there around departure time, they will definitely leave without you.

Also, since Delta has a nonstop from JFK to Tel Aviv (where it appears you are going) which leaves late in the evening, it's possible that if you miss your connection and there are seats available, that Delta could rebook you for that flight.

    Thanks. This is very helpful.

  • Minimum time between International and Domestic flights
    Dec 25, 2013

Hi. I am arriving at 02:00pm to JFK on Saturday with Alitalia and have to choose between a 2.5 hours and a 4 hours leg between International and Domestic flights (booking is separate). Could you advise?

I would go with the 4 hour since alitalia isn't known for punctuality and because you're doing separate bookings.

    Thanks!

  • immigration, baggage, customs, transfer - Delta JFK. How does it work?

We (2 US nationals) will arrive on Delta from Frankfurt, then fly to Tampa on Delta. Do we change terminals? Do we first go through immigration and customs, then recheck luggage? Do we change terminals? How long does all this usually take? We have 2 hours.

You will go through US Immigration, claim your baggage, go through US customs, then re-check your baggage with Delta in Terminal 4. Your flight to Tampa could leave from either Terminal 4 or Terminal 2. If you leave from Terminal 4, you will just go back through security and to your gate. If from Terminal 2 you can either go through security in T4 and take Delta's shuttle bus to T2, or take the AirTrain to T2 and go through security there (the second option will probably be slightly faster). You should have enough time.

Thanks. I'm happy to know what we can expect.

  • Connecting from a domestic flight to international at JFK

I'm planning on flying from Buffalo to JFK and then connecting to my Qatar Airways flight to Doha. Assuming I fly from buffalo with either Jet Blue or Delta I know I'll have to collect my luggage but will I have to clear customs and immigration as well? How long should I allow to make the connection?

No, since both Buffalo and New York City are in the United States (actually in the same state), you don't have to go through any customs or immigration.

Thanks. I realise that but wasn't sure if I could move between terminals airside or whether I would have to go landslide which would involve customs and passport control as I will be flying out of the US. To date in my travels I've managed to avoid JFK.

Going landside does NOT require customs or passport control since you are arriving on a domestic flight. The only time you go through US customs or passport control is when you ARRIVE in the US.

i am coming by aircanada and leaving by airindia at jfk, i will have two check in baggage. could you guide me how to carry those two baggage and one carry bag while going airtrain

If you departed from a Canadian airport which has US customs clearance, you need not go through passport control & customs clearance at JFK. Also, if you purchased your flights on one ticket, or your AirIndia flight is a code-share with AirCanada - your bags will automatically be transferred - if not, you need to claim your bags and re-check them in at T4. To get from T7 to T4 take the 'Airline Terminals' train (your next stops are T5, then T4. If you can't manage taking your bags on the train, get a trolley and exit T7, taking a taxi - in both cases you need to go through security check at T4 before proceeding to your gate.

    thanks for the info

  • Do I need to re-check the baggage
    Dec 22, 2013

Below listed is my itinerary Tampa => JFK, JFK => Dubai, Dubai => India. The itinerary is all on one ticket. Tampa to JKF flight is operated by American Airlines and will be arriving JFK at 21:30. The Emirates flight departs at 23:00. Do I need to re-check the baggage at JFK (2 bags). If yes, would hour and half be enough for me take the emirates flight?

American and Emirates have an Interline agreement, so they should be able to check your bags through to India in Tampa and you will not have to claim them in JFK. All you will have to do is go from Terminal 8 to Terminal 4, get your Emirates boarding passes if you don't already have them, and go through security.

Thanks a lot for the answer.

Can you advise where the Emirates transfer desk is? I am flying into JFK from Cartegena on JetBlue, then on Emirates to DXB. I think JetBlue will arrive in T4 so was hoping to just do a transit to the EK flight, rather than going through immigration and customs. I have tried to checkin online for the EK flight but I still have to pick up a boarding pass.

Any time you enter the US you have to go through US Immigration and customs. There's no way around it.

We're a party of 10 flying from Helsinki to NY on American Airlines 6025 arriving at JFK terminal 8 at 15.55. We have a connecting American Airlines flight to Miami at 17.45. Is it possible to make it to the connecting flight timewise?

American 6025 is actually Finnair flight 5, however, it sill still arrive in Terminal 8. If your first flight is on-time you should have enough time.

Will be arriving at Terminal 1 AT 13:05, will need to connect with Delta, terminal 4, flight at 16:10, is that enough time and how long to get between terminals.

Yes, that's plenty of time. I'm assuming your T1 flight is International. You will clear Immigration, claim your baggage, go through us customs. Then, if your bag is tagged through to Delta you can re-check it in T1, but if not, take it with you, and take the AirTrain/Air Terminals Train from T1 to T4. It will only take about 15 minutes to get between terminals.

Thanks for the info, will try to get bags checked thru the Delta flight, may save a little. thanks

hi, i m travelling by canada airline from toronto to jfk and then to india by air india. could anyone guide me

Do you mean "Air Canada" - there is no "Canada Airline"? Were your tickets bought on one reservation or separate ones? Air Canada arrives in Terminal 7 and Air India departs from Terminal 4. They are connected outside security via the AirTrain. You will pre-clear US Immigration in Toronto.

thank you very much, it aircanada, tickets bought are separate one.

  • From Paris to Miami
    Dec 15, 2013

Hi, I'll be traveling from Paris to Miami via JFK. My booking flights is with Air France but the flight to MIAMI is operated by Delta (code share). I would greatly appreciate any information as to how to best and fast make the connection because I only have 2 hours. Thank you so much.

You will arrive in Terminal 1 where you will go through US Immigration, claim your baggage, go through US Customs, and re-check your bags. Then you will go upstairs to the AirTrain/Air Terminals Train to either Terminal 4 or Terminal 2 (check your departure gate before departing at Delta.com or the Air France personnel may also be able to help you) where you will go through security and to your gate (it appears the two afternoon JFK-MIA flights on Delta usually leave from Terminal 4).

Thanks for your answer. In Terminal 1, after leave US customs, do you know where can I re-check my bags? And after that and to go to Air Train/Air Terminals is far away from there? You wrote I need go upstairs. Is it to the left or write from the re-cheching? I ask because I cant loose any minute. I only have 2 hours. I need correct directions. Thanks again

The re-check desk will be right after you clear customs it will be clearly marked. Also, the signs to the airtrain are also very clearly marked. It's kind of hard to explain in text.

  • What to do in Terminal 8
    Dec 13, 2013

Arriving from Toronto into Terminal 2 with Delta and then flying out from Terminal 7 with Qantas. Unfortunately there will now be a delay of 10 hours because our Delta flight has changed. What can we do for all this time in Terminal 8? Are there lounges that you can pay to go to rest, shower eat etc. Any and all suggestions gratefully read.

Unless you are oneworld elite or in business or first class, and can therefore use the British Airways lounge in T7, your only other option is to buy a pass to the United Club in T7. The best place to buy these passes is on ebay, but be sure to check the expiration date of the passes you're buying.

On arrival at Terminal 2 of JFK Airport take the 'Airline Terminals Train' running counter-clockwise (next terminals T1, T8, T7)every 8 mins on average, but in the unsecured areas. (If both legs of the journey were purchased on one ticket, your bags will automatically be transferred, if not, make sure that Delta transfers bags. On arrival at T8 you will need to go through security check before entering the secure area of the Departures level, which offers shopping & dining, as well as the OneWorld lounge, situated in front of the gate area of Concourse B. Qantas is a member of OneWorld Alliance. For more information contact Qantas at 800-227-4500.

Disregard most of frdec's post. QANTAS operates from T7, not T8.

  • Connecting flight in JFK to international plane
    Dec 8, 2013

I'm going on a Jetblue flight from Rochester NY to JFK, and then have a 6 hour layover, and will be taking an international flight from JFK. Will I be able to meet a friend in the neighborhood during the layover, or is that not allowed? I don't mind going through security again.

Yes, you can go wherever you want as long as you get back to JFK 90-120 minutes before your intl flight.

  • Terminal 4 to Terminal 8

I am getting into JFK terminal 4 from Phoenix at 630 via Delta. I am planning on buying another domestic flight via American Airlines which is Terminal 8. Do I need to go through security again or can I just hop on the AirTrain? The next flight is at 8 Thanks

I will just have my carry on bags with me

You will have to go through security again as the AirTrain runs outside security. Make sure to check in online for your AA flight before you leave Phoenix. You should be OK as long as your first flight is on-time, bu things at JFK frequently are not on-time.

Food is ok. But we asked for some boiled water for our baby food so that the water would be sterilised and instead of saying this was not possible due to US regulations or providing the water a little later after it had cooled sufficiently the staff simply said they could not boil water! The manager was even less courteous and professional....we had a terrible experience, surprising given the excellent service we received in the rest of the USA with our baby.
