We fly in with Delta, I believe terminal 2, and flout out with KLM, terminal 4. Will we have enough time to get your connecting flight within 45 min. Delta told me that they wouldn't have booked a flight like that if it wasn't possible and I am unable to change my ticket.

It's possible, Delta runs a shuttle bus inside security between 2 and 4. You'll need to take that to have a chance if you do arrive in 2.

Friends coming from SVO on Saturday at 1650, flight to PDX at 18:25. Have checked luggage. Both flights Delta. Family of 3 , non citizens. Do they have enough time for everything and will they needs to go through TSA and if yes how bad is it in JFK? thanks

That does not appear to be enough time, unless the flight from Moscow lands early. However, if they miss the flight, Delta will put them on the next flight to Portland.

They will have to go through TSA. At this time of day, it shouldn't be too bad, but lines are never short at JFK.

Will they be able to check in their luggage right after customs in the arrival terminal or they need to take it to the other one?

If everything is on the same reservation then they can re-check it right after customs.

  • Connecting on a separate booking

Hi, I am flying british airways from LHR to JFK on 13th October arriving at 1105 in terminal 7. UK passport with only carry-on luggage. Looking to book a flight with jet blue at 1332 and was wondering if that would be enough time to make the connection? From checking online I think Jet Blue fly from terminal 5. Main concern is the time it takes to go through customs and I imagine I would have to go through security again so wondered what sort of time it takes in JFK. Thanks! Steve

With carry-ons only I think that's just enough time.

I'm arriving from Buenos Aires at Terminal 8 at 7:20 a.m. and leaving to Boston at 11,45 a.m.from the same Terminal. May I exit outside for a few minutes before going to the departure area?

You will have to go through customs and immigration immediately upon landing. However, after finishing that, you may step outside before re-entering security at your terminal. You have plenty of time.

  • Re-checking bags

If I'm arriving and departing from the same terminal (4), do I need to recheck my bags?

It depends where you are arriving from and if your tickets are on one reservation or two separate reservations. Where are you flying from and to and on what airlines?

I'm arriving from PHL and they are one reservation. My destination is Prague

Then all you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. There is no US Immigration or Customs when leaving the US.

  • My flight this Saturday

I'm flying from Quebec City this Saturday to JFK (not sure which terminal I land in) and due to arrive at 4pm. I then have a separately booked ticket to London with Virgin Atlantic at 6.30pm, leaving from terminal 4. Will I have enough time? How long will it take to get through bearing in mind I'm travelling on uk passport and will need to collect my bags. Thanks! Michael

Quebec City does NOT offer US preclearance, meaning that you will have to go through customs and immigration when you land in New York. You will also have to check your bag in with Virgin Atlantic and Enter security. In my opinion, you do not have enough time. Even if you do, it is not worth the risk. If you miss your flight in New York, neither airline will rebook you on a new flight to London because the tickets are on separate reservations, and you'll have to pay out of pocket. I reccomend that you call your first airline and move the flight up, even if you have to pay a change fee. You will need more than three hours in New York.

Not a U.S citizen, arriving to JFK Terminal 8 from LHR at 1 PM and then have a flight to Raleigh from terminal 2 (Delta) at 3:55 PM. I have no checked baggage, travelling alone. Do I have a chance to make it?

With no checked luggage, you should be able to make the connection as long as your flight from London isn't substantially late.

Also, be sure to check the monitors or Delta.com as there's a good chance your flight to RDU may actually depart from Terminal 4.

  • Terminal 5 to 4 with 3 pcs of luggage and a toddler
    Aug 18, 2016
I arrive jfk terminal 5 at 8.40am to depart from jfk at 12.35noon. I have 3 pcs of luggage a hand luggage and a toddler. How can I carry my luggage onto the AirTrain? Will I be allowed to use the airport luggage cart. Also do I have enough time to go through customs and check in again. Please advice

Well, you will only have to carry your piece of hand luggage on to the air train since the air train is inside of security. You will only have to carry your 3 pieces of luggage from immigration to the recheck desk, which is not a long distance. If you need a luggage cart, somebody from JFK will be able to make that happen. You should have enough time for your connection, no matter what terminal you depart in.

I'm coming from Takpa to NYC with JetBlue and taking Arik Air from NYC to Nigeria. Won't I have to collect my 3 suitcases from JetBlue and then take to terminal 4 to check on Arik flight? Please clarify as I do not think your response addresses this. And I have a toddler to cater for. Please advice

  • Connecting domestic to international flight
    Aug 16, 2016
Is it plausible to arrive in JFK from Nashville, TN on American Airlines at 09h53am, and catch an international flight to Johannesburg on South African Airways departing at 11h15? We will not have checked luggage, just carry-on.

With no checked baggage that's possible, but it leaves no time to spare, especially if you can't check in for your SAA flight online. You will have to change terminals, get your SAA boarding passes, and go through security.

  • 3hr 30 min layover
    Aug 16, 2016
arrive terminal 4 at 3.30pm on delta from Manchester uk depart to Miami on delta terminal 2 at 6.55pm what will I have to do on arrival thanks

You will go through customs, pick up your bag, go through immigration, re-check your bag at the re-check desk, go through security at Terminal 4, then take the shuttle to Terminal 2. You have enough time.

  • Arriving JFK T2 / departing T4 separate tickets
    Aug 16, 2016
I am arriving at JFK T2 with Delta and then connecting with Emirates in T4, with plenty of luggage and separate tickets. Would you please indicate the most effective way for the connection. Would I have to carry the luggage from one terminal to other for check in with Emirates?

With separate tickets, you will have to pick up your bags at the Terminal 2 claim, walk to terminal 4, check in at Emirates, then go through security at terminal 4. I advise at least 2 hours, 3 if your inbound is international.

Many thanks for the useful information. would you know how far is it (walking time) between terminal 2 and terminal 4. Is there a shuttle between terminals that allow carrying luggage or is it easier to walk.

You won't actually walk to T4, you will take the airtrain.

  • Intl to Domestic T7 to T8

Flying Paris to JFK on Icelandair into T7 with checked bags. Flight arrives 1230pm and connection on AA T8 at 530pm to Austin. What will we need to do once getting off the plane (luggage, customs, security, etc) and is it easy getting from T7 to T8? Also I'm hearing Icelandair is notoriously late so how much time is necessary to get to the other flight?

Upon landing, you will go through customs, pick up your bag, immigration, recheck your bag at the recheck desk, take a shuttle to Terminal 8, and Enter security. You need about two and a half hours. Your flight from Paris/Reykjavik could be over two hours late, and you shouldn't have a problem making your connection.

Correction- You will enter security at Terminal 7 then take the shuttle to Terminal 8.

You actually won't be able to re-check your bags in T7 since IcelandAir and American don't have an interline agreement, you need to take your bags with you on the AirTrain to T8 to check them with American.

Thank you both for the invaluable information, our first time through JFK wont be an unknown now. Thanks again!

  • Delta T4 to T2
    Aug 15, 2016
I am arriving from EDI at T4 and departing T2 to MCO with a 2hr 37min layover. Both flights on same reservation and I have checked baggage. Will I have to collect my baggage and recheck it, and what is the best way to get to T2?

Yes, you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, go through security and take the shuttle bus to T2. You should have enough time.

  • Enough time?
    Aug 15, 2016
Terminal 4 7:18 to Terminal 2 8:05 No baggage. Both Delta. Will we make it?

Yes, that's possible if the first flight is domestic and on-time.

  • 75 min layover
    Aug 14, 2016
On an Endeavour Air (Delta) from Toronto connecting at JFK for Delta to Turks and Caicis. There is a 75 min layover. Don't believe we have to get our bags. Wondering if this is enough time to make this connecting flight to Turks. It's February and worry about weather. To get a much longer layover is very long and an extra $300+. Any advice is appreciated.

Further to my question above.....it is all on one reservation with Delta. The return flight has a layover of 3hrs 50 mins. I realize I will have to collect our bags and go through customs to return to Toronto so that should be enough time I think.

Yes, that should be enough time. On your way to Turks and Caicos all you have to do in Atlanta is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate, Yes, you should have enough time for both directions. Atlanta usually has fairly good weather in February.

I would be connecting at JFK and not in Atlanta. Comments still apply?

Yes, the same procedure applies. You should have enough time. Sorry about that.
