  • Connecting between terminal 4 to 5

I'm arriving with Jetblue at Terminal 5 and need to go to Terminal 4 for an international flight on South African Airways. Will 1h40 be enough to get to Terminal 5? I don't need to pick up bags they will be checked through. Also, on my return flight I will be arriving at T5 and need to go to T4 (booked on the same ticket). Will 2h30 be enough from T5 to T4? I will have check bags.

Yes, if all tickets are on the same reservation those connection times should be sufficient.

Hi, flying to SFO from DUB, via JFK. All Delta flights, all booked on one ticket. The itinerary I want has a 1hr3min connection time in JFK. I know this will likely be tight but is this physically enough? I know we should pre-clear customs in DUB and we're biz class which might help?

Yes, that should be enough time. Both flights will be in Terminal 4 and all you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

    Great stuff, thanks!

hi i land with delta from sf (either terminal 2 or terminal 4) and then have an international flight from terminal 1 (norwegian air). how much time do i need to be on the safe side?

You will arrive in Terminal 4. If you have checked baggage I would want 3 hours between flights. You could do a bit less without checked bags.

no checked baggage but wondering what delta on-time performance is.

Delta's is better than Norwegian's. JFK is a mess though, if there's any bad weather there it will be all backed up.

  • Abu Dhabi to Boston (via JFK)

Hi, I will travel on Etihad from Abu Dhabi to Boston (via JFK). The booking is on one Etihad reservation. I plan to go through pre-clearance in Abu Dhabi. Would you know if luggage is checked all the way through to Boston ? and I just need to change terminals at JFK ?

Should clarify, that the JFK to Bosotn flight will be on JetBlue

Yes, if all tickets are on the same reservation your bags will be checked through to Boston. Yes, you will just have to take the AIrTrain from T4 to T5 and go through security.

I am going to transit thru JFK from Delhi (India) to Toronto. Will my check in baggage need to be collected, custom cleared and rechecked at JFK prior to my Toronto flight? My Delhi - JFK is Aiir India flight and JFK - Toronto is Air Canada flight.

Yes, you will arrive in Terminal 4, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then if your bags are tagged through to YYZ you can re-check them at the re-check desk, otherwise you will bring them with you on the AirTrain to T7 to re-check them with Air Canada, then go through security and to your departure gate. You will go through Canadian immigration and customs when you get to Toronto. If you are an Indian Citizen you will need a US Transit Visa for your connection.

Thanks ZAP. Very helpful. Will Indian herbal medicines (around 2 kgs) be allowed thru JFK customs?

I'm not an expert in what is allowed through customs, but that sounds to me like something that may raise suspicions, especially in that quantity. Although considering the fact that you are proceeding on to Canada, they may allow it through and let the Canadians deal with it when you get there.

  • Jet Blue to Delta International

I am flying into Jet Blue at 11AM, I have to then get to Delta International, what is best way and how much time

You take the AirTrain from T5 to T4. I recommend 3 hours between flights if you're bringing checked baggage as you will have to transfer it yourself.

  • International flight connecting at JFK

Hi, do I have to clear customs in the US when connecting at JFK airport for an international destination and coming from Canada? Is an 1 1/2 hour layover enough? Thank you!

All Canadian origins that have flights to JFK have US Immigration and Customs preclearance, so you will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs there. For me to tell you if you have enough time you have to tell me what airlines you are flying and whether your tickets are on one reservation or two separate ones.

thank you for your answer! I'll be flying with United and it will be on one reservation.

United does not fly to JFK.

Sorry my mistake. It's not JFK but Newark.

I have separate tickets. I land at Jfk in either terminal 4 or 5 and have to get my luggage from baggage claim and then get to my international departure. Will getting my bag and making it to international check in be easy enough to do by following signs once I am there?

You will arrive in Terminal 5. Aeroflot uses Terminal 1. Once you get your bags just follow signs to the airtrain and then get on the train that says it goes to Terminal 1, then re-check your bags at the Aeroflot check-in desk.

  • transferring from a domestic to international flight, JFK to Istanbul

Hi, I'm flying from JFK to Istanbul Ataturk Airport. My flight from RDU to JFK arrives at 11:50a in Terminal 4, and the flight to Istanbul leaves at 1:40p in Terminal 1. Is that enough time to get there? Will I have to go through security again?

... I meant arriving in Terminal 5. I also have checked bags.

Are your tickets on one reservation or two separate ones? If they are one one reservation and your bags are checked through to Istanbul that should be enough time. You will take the AirTrain to T1 and then go through security. If your bags are not checked through to Istanbul I do not think that is enough time.

Hi, thanks for the response! They'll be checked through to Istanbul. Thank you again!

  • connection between a domestic and an international flight

I am travelling from Mumbai to New York and my flight lands at Terminal 4, at 7:25am from the same terminal I would be taking a domestic flight to Boston at 11:00am. I have 3.5 hours at hand. What would the procedure be for getting onto a domestic flight? Will i have to re-check in, collect my luggage? and then is 3.5 hours enough? Thank You

Yes, that should be enough time. If you are traveling on two separate reservations you will arrive in Terminal 4, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then take your bags to the Delta ticket counter, re-check them, and go through security. If your bags are tagged through to BOS you can re-check them at the re-check desk right after customs.

I am traveling with checked luggage on one ticket on Delta. Returning from Italy, arriving JFK at 1:30. Connnecting flight to Washington is at 3:00. Will I make it?

That should be barely enough time.

  • Transfer from T1 to T4

I'm going from Paris to Washington DC, I'll arrive at 13:00 on Terminal 1 (Air France Flight) and departure at 15:00 from Terminal 4 (Delta Flight). I have 1 Ticket for all the travel. Do I need to pass security and customs, and pick up my luggage and delivery It again? 2Hs is enough?

Yes, you will arrive in T1, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then take the AirTrain to T4 and go through security. You should have enough time.

  • T4 to T2

Flying Toronto-JFK-San Juan Puerto Rico. I am arriving at T4 and need to transfer to T2 - for the connecting flight to San Juan. Connection time is 1 hour and 10 mins., and my first time through JFK. I just have a carry on no checked bags - will I have enough time for the connection ? Thanks in advance.

Actually you don't have to transfer terminals. The San Juan flights also leave from Terminal 4. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time if your flight from Toronto is on-time.

Hello Zap - are you sure that I won't have to transfer terminals because if I look at those daily flights, it shows flt. 4100 ( YYZ-> JFK ) arriving in to Terminal 4 and the flt. 2474 ( JFK -> SJU ) departing terminal 2 for San Juan. I am just concerned that if I we do have to make our way from term 4 to term 2 with only an hour and 10 mins. it might not be enough time. I probably won't know the terminal information(s) until closer to the Jan. 26, 2016 flight.

  • Transfer from T4 to T2 on separate tickets.

Arriving in JFK T4 (CZ flight) at 5:15AM. Departing out of JFK T2 (DL flight) at 8:40AM. Minimum connection time is 1h45min. This gives 3h25min, so not worried about time, just hassle. CZ flight and DL flight are booked as separate tickets. Will we need to take luggage to T2 to check in, or can we check in at T4 and then take DL shuttle to T2?

You can show your Delta confirmation to the China Southern agent in your origin city and ask for your bags to be tagged through to Delta. They may be willing to do so. If not, you can re-check your bags either at the Delta check-in desk in T4 or T2.

  • Connecting flight DFW-JFK-BCN

I have a connecting flight from at JFK from Dallas to Barcelona. 1h10' of connection. Both at Terminal 8. Does anybody know the process for connecting the flight? Will I need to go through inmigration/customs and pick my luggage to redeposit it? Or can I go directly to next gate?

If the flights are both booked as 1 ticket, you will not need to do any security or luggage transfer in JFK. T8 so assuming ticket is on AA, right? The minimum legal connection for that trip on 1 ticket is 40 minutes, so your 1h10min is 30 minutes extra in case of delays or anything. Just when you get to JFK, don't waste any time getting to your new gate to asses the situation before continuing to any lounge or shopping.
