  • arriving from Fort-Lauderdal to Montreal
    Jan 4, 2014
Hi, I will be arriving from Fort-Lauderdale with Delta and going to Montreal also with Delta, Can you tell me which steps I will have to follow ..... Never have a connecting flight in USA. Thank you so much

You will arrive in Terminal 4 or Terminal 2 (probably Terminal 2) and depart from Terminal 2. If you arrive in Terminal 4 you will have to take Delta's shuttle bus from Terminal 4 to Terminal 2. If you arrive in Terminal 2 you just have to go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. In either case you won't have to go through security.

Thank you so much ... It is such a relief to know that ....

  • JetBlue to AA connection, both international
    Jan 5, 2014
I'm flying Jetblue from BGI to JFK and then AA from JFK to YYZ. I only have an hour flights. Can I make the cnnection?

sorry, that's an hour between flights.

If you only have an hour between your flights you will NOT have enough time. You should not have booked that ticket and will have to change it.

how about 2 hours 30 minutes to change from an international jetblue flight to a domestic jetblue flight? I would have to clear customs. Do both flights go out of the same terminal?

International JetBlue flights arrive in T4 and domestic ones depart from T5. That should be enough time.

  • Connecting from T7 to T4/T2
    Jan 4, 2014
I will be arriving in JFK from Hongkong with Cathay (CX 830) @12.10 PM and will have a connecting flight with Delta to Buffalo (DL 2907) leaving @3:30 PM. I will be travelling with my wife and will be carrying 2 baggage bags and 1 carry on bag. Is it the time enough for me to catch the flight on time. Need your advise.

Yes, that should be enough time. Once you clear customs in T7, if your bags are checked through to Buffalo you can re-check them in T7, if not you will have to take them with you on the AirTrain to T2 (your flight will depart from T2) and check them with Delta there (and pay checked bag fees). You will have plenty of time.

    Thank you for your information

  • Connection Question
    Jan 7, 2014
Arriving @10:25 am Air Canada Terminal7 connecting to Japan airlines terminal 1 for a 12:15 flight. What is the best way to make this connection ? Does train travel in both directions? Do we have enough time to collect backpacks and get to next flight? Thanks

Yes, you can take a train in both directions. You should have enough time as you will pre-clear US Immigration when you depart Canada so your arrival into JFK will be like a domestic flight. http://www.jfk-airport.net/airtrain.html

Thanks Zap but I've been noticing that the air Canada flight has been arriving about an hour late quite often. Yikes would it be better to walk or take the train. Getting a bit worried about missing flight in NYC and then missing Tokyo flight. Help!

You can't walk between terminals at JFK, you have to take the train.

  • Arriving at JFK from Buenos Aires to domestic Boston connection
    Jan 3, 2014
Hi, I will be arriving at 0635 am at terminal 8 and got my connecting flight to Boston at 0800 am all via American Airlines. Do you know what gate normally Boston departs from? Is that enough time for the connection?

There are no usual gates. Terminal 8 is not extremely large. You should have enough time for your connection if your first flight is on-time. Immigration shouldn't be too crowded that early in the morning.

  • Connection, Coming from Miami with Delta, leaving to Milan with Alital
    Dec 29, 2013
Hi. Can anyone advise the procedure we will have to take the 1st of january landing in JFK from Miami with Delta flight number 1671 (landing time expected:3:11pm ) and then going to take the alitalia flight at terminal 1 to Milan at 8pm(flight number: a z0605? thank you in advance

You will arrive in Terminal 2 or 4. You will then have to take the AirTrain/Air Terminals Train to Terminal 1 where you will go through security and to your gate. Your bags should be checked through to Milan. You will have plenty of time.

i'm coming from Moscow Sheremetyevo, SVO airport to San Diego Lindbergh International, SAN airport. But my connection flight is through John F Kennedy International airport. I have 2 hours. Can i make on time to my flight to San diego? how long it takes to go though 1T to 2T? Do i need to go to customs?

I'm assuming you are flying Aeroflot from SVO to JFK and Delta to San Diego and booked your tickets on a single reservation. If so you will arrive in Terminal 1 where you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, and then go through US Customs, then re-check your bags. You will then take the AirTrain/Air Terminals Train from T1 to T2 (if your flight to San Diego's Delta flight number starts with 2 or T4 (if it starts with 4) and then go through security and to your gate. You will have to hope your flight from Moscow is on-time and hurry, you will barely have enough time.

how fast does it takes to re-check my bags? when i will claim my bag where i need to go to re-check them? i hope i will make on time

You will claim them between clearing immigration and clearing customs. The re-check desk will be after you exit customs. There will be ample signage. Time to do it will depend how crowded it is, I can't really estimate exactly.

  • Short connection from Delta to Alitalia
    Dec 28, 2013
A group of 27 of us will arrive at terminal 2 at JFK on a Delta flight from MSP. We are connecting with an Alitalia flight that leaves from terminal 1. We have only 90 minutes layover. Our bags will have been checked all the way through to Tel Aviv but I am wondering how long it takes to get from T2 to T1.

You will have to hope your first flight is on-time and hurry. It will probably take about a half hour to 45 minutes to take the AirTrain/Air Terminals Train to T1 and go through security.

Thanks for this info. With a group, what would be the chances of Alitatia holding the flight for us?

It's possible, there's no clear and public policies on when flights are held and when they are not. It also depends how late your inbound flight is (if it is). If it's clear you won't be there around departure time, they will definitely leave without you.

Also, since Delta has a nonstop from JFK to Tel Aviv (where it appears you are going) which leaves late in the evening, it's possible that if you miss your connection and there are seats available, that Delta could rebook you for that flight.

    Thanks. This is very helpful.

  • Minimum time between International and Domestic flights
    Dec 25, 2013
Hi. I am arriving at 02:00pm to JFK on Saturday with Alitalia and have to choose between a 2.5 hours and a 4 hours leg between International and Domestic flights (booking is separate). Could you advise?

I would go with the 4 hour since alitalia isn't known for punctuality and because you're doing separate bookings.

  • immigration, baggage, customs, transfer - Delta JFK. How does it work?
    Dec 24, 2013
We (2 US nationals) will arrive on Delta from Frankfurt, then fly to Tampa on Delta. Do we change terminals? Do we first go through immigration and customs, then recheck luggage? Do we change terminals? How long does all this usually take? We have 2 hours.

You will go through US Immigration, claim your baggage, go through US customs, then re-check your baggage with Delta in Terminal 4. Your flight to Tampa could leave from either Terminal 4 or Terminal 2. If you leave from Terminal 4, you will just go back through security and to your gate. If from Terminal 2 you can either go through security in T4 and take Delta's shuttle bus to T2, or take the AirTrain to T2 and go through security there (the second option will probably be slightly faster). You should have enough time.

Thanks. I'm happy to know what we can expect.

  • Connecting from a domestic flight to international at JFK
    Dec 26, 2013
I'm planning on flying from Buffalo to JFK and then connecting to my Qatar Airways flight to Doha. Assuming I fly from buffalo with either Jet Blue or Delta I know I'll have to collect my luggage but will I have to clear customs and immigration as well? How long should I allow to make the connection?

No, since both Buffalo and New York City are in the United States (actually in the same state), you don't have to go through any customs or immigration.

Thanks. I realise that but wasn't sure if I could move between terminals airside or whether I would have to go landslide which would involve customs and passport control as I will be flying out of the US. To date in my travels I've managed to avoid JFK.

Going landside does NOT require customs or passport control since you are arriving on a domestic flight. The only time you go through US customs or passport control is when you ARRIVE in the US.

i am coming by aircanada and leaving by airindia at jfk, i will have two check in baggage. could you guide me how to carry those two baggage and one carry bag while going airtrain

If you departed from a Canadian airport which has US customs clearance, you need not go through passport control & customs clearance at JFK. Also, if you purchased your flights on one ticket, or your AirIndia flight is a code-share with AirCanada - your bags will automatically be transferred - if not, you need to claim your bags and re-check them in at T4. To get from T7 to T4 take the 'Airline Terminals' train (your next stops are T5, then T4. If you can't manage taking your bags on the train, get a trolley and exit T7, taking a taxi - in both cases you need to go through security check at T4 before proceeding to your gate.

    thanks for the info

  • Do I need to re-check the baggage
    Dec 22, 2013
Below listed is my itinerary Tampa => JFK, JFK => Dubai, Dubai => India. The itinerary is all on one ticket. Tampa to JKF flight is operated by American Airlines and will be arriving JFK at 21:30. The Emirates flight departs at 23:00. Do I need to re-check the baggage at JFK (2 bags). If yes, would hour and half be enough for me take the emirates flight?

American and Emirates have an Interline agreement, so they should be able to check your bags through to India in Tampa and you will not have to claim them in JFK. All you will have to do is go from Terminal 8 to Terminal 4, get your Emirates boarding passes if you don't already have them, and go through security.

Thanks a lot for the answer.

Can you advise where the Emirates transfer desk is? I am flying into JFK from Cartegena on JetBlue, then on Emirates to DXB. I think JetBlue will arrive in T4 so was hoping to just do a transit to the EK flight, rather than going through immigration and customs. I have tried to checkin online for the EK flight but I still have to pick up a boarding pass.

Any time you enter the US you have to go through US Immigration and customs. There's no way around it.

  • Short transfer time
    Dec 18, 2013
We're a party of 10 flying from Helsinki to NY on American Airlines 6025 arriving at JFK terminal 8 at 15.55. We have a connecting American Airlines flight to Miami at 17.45. Is it possible to make it to the connecting flight timewise?

American 6025 is actually Finnair flight 5, however, it sill still arrive in Terminal 8. If your first flight is on-time you should have enough time.

  • Time between flights
    Dec 18, 2013
Will be arriving at Terminal 1 AT 13:05, will need to connect with Delta, terminal 4, flight at 16:10, is that enough time and how long to get between terminals.

Yes, that's plenty of time. I'm assuming your T1 flight is International. You will clear Immigration, claim your baggage, go through us customs. Then, if your bag is tagged through to Delta you can re-check it in T1, but if not, take it with you, and take the AirTrain/Air Terminals Train from T1 to T4. It will only take about 15 minutes to get between terminals.

Thanks for the info, will try to get bags checked thru the Delta flight, may save a little. thanks
