  • Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 & changing Airlines
    Jan 24, 2017
What is the process for flying domestic into Terminal 2 (Delta) and then changing airlines to fly international from Terminal 3 (Aeroflot)? Same question regarding the return flight. Flying international into Terminal 3 (Aeroflot) and transferring to Terminal 2 (Delta) for a domestic flight How much time should I allow in between flights on each trip?

Correction on terminals Delta is Terminal 4 and Aeroflot is Terminal 1

On your way to Russia 90 minutes is acceptable. You just have to take the AirTrain to T1 and go through security. On the return you will have to go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, take the AirTrain to T4 and go through security.

We booked the domestic flight separate from the Russia flight. So I am assuming we will have to pick up our luggage at Baggage Claim and then go to T1 to check in for the international flight to Russia. Correct?

That is correct, which means I'd want 3 hours.

What about on the return flight? After going through Customs and Immigration, are you able to recheck your bags a the re-check desk even if you are now on a different airlines?

No, you can't. You'll have to take it to your departure terminal with you and re-check it there.

How much time due you recommend between flights in the return leg of this trip in order to get through customs and then recheck our luggage at the different Terminal?

  • Terminal 4 to Terminal 1
    Jan 21, 2017
We're flying into Terminal 4 on Delta on a Thursday--arriving at 5:30 p.m. Our flight to Italy is on Alitalia leaving from Terminal 1 at 8:30 p.m.. Is that enough time to make the connection? What ground transport should we use to move between terminals? Thanks.

If your first flight is domestic that is plenty of time. The only way between Terminals is the AirTrain, which runs outside security.

Yes, LAX to JFK. Thanks for the information.

  • Have I got time
    Jan 22, 2017
Due to flight schedule changes - Arrival at JFK from Montego Bay gives me 1 hour layover before a flight to London Heathrow. Both arrival and departure are with DELTA at Terminal 4. Would this be enough time? Many thanks.

Realistically no, call Delta to reject the schedule change and request a connection over a different hub (such as ATL) or a later flight to London.

thank you for your advice. they have now put us on a flight from jfk to lhr which gives us 1hr 30min layover. is this acceptable ? arrival from mbj and departure to lhr are from terminal 4..would we have to go through customs collect bags and then security again?

  • JFK connections 50 mins, Delta Airlines, PHL-JFK and JFK-SAN
    Jan 19, 2017
I will fly from Philadelphia to JFK and then from JFK to San Diego. The airline details: Philadelphia (PHL) – New York City (JFK) Delta 3802 · Economy Class · Canadair Reg. Jet Operated by Endeavor Air DBA Delta Connection I have 52 mins layover in JFK. And then fly to San Diego: New York City (JFK) – San Diego (SAN) Delta 2246 Is this connection possible in 50 mins?

Yes, that is possible but leaves no time to spare as you will arrive in Terminal 4, take a shuttle to Terminal 2 and then depart.

  • connection at JFK
    Jan 19, 2017
My flight options are Alitalia to Delta with 1h 55 min between, Delta to Delta with 5 hr layover, or Delta to Delta with 4h 25min and switch to LGA. What is the best option?

The Alitalia to Delta will be difficult (but not impossible if you have no checked bags). I would probably just book the long Delta to Delta connection and buy a day pass for the Sky Club.

  • JFK connection at Terminal 8, Cathy Pacific to American Airline 1.5hr
    Jan 18, 2017
Anyone take Cathy Pacific from HK to JFK then connect to American airline, the ticket with only 1 hr 40 mins connection, is it enough ? Anyone can share the connection process in JFK terminal 8

You will arrive in Terminal 7, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then take the AirTrain to Terminal 8 and go through security. It's not impossible, but it's a very tight connection.

Flying from Shannon Ireland to ATL, arriving at JFK, change planes to ATL, connection time shows 1 hr 40 mins, is this connection possible in 1:40???

    What airlines are you flying?

    delta connecting to delta

Yes, that is enough time. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Shannon, so all you have to do at JFK is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. If you depart from Terminal 2, Delta runs a shuttle between Terminal 4 and Terminal 2 inside security.

  • Jet blue from chs to Madrid via aa operated by Iberia
    Jan 17, 2017
Our jet blue flight lands at 7:04 on march 2 and connecting flight to Spain leaves at 8:35. We will not check bags. Will we be able to make our flight?

To clarify: JetBlue from chs to JFK lands at 7:04. Connect in JFK to American Airlines to Madrid, leaving at 8:35

With no checked bags you have barely enough time if everything goes perfectly and you are able to check-in online for your flight to Madrid. Also, note that the 8:35 PM flight from JFK to Madrid is operated by Iberia, not American and departs from Terminal 7. So you need to arrive in Terminal 5, take the AirTrain to Terminal 7, get your Iberia boarding passes if you can't get them online, and go through security. It's difficult.

What if we could come in at 6:29-more Doable? Operated by psa, leaves chs 2:20, one stop and lands at jfk at 6:29

    Yes, that's a bit better.

  • Terminal 8 to 4 Transfer
    Jan 17, 2017
Hello! I'm flying in to JFK from LAX on AA. I land at terminal 8 at 8:10 PM and have a flight out to Milan on Emirates (Terminal 4) at 10:20 PM. Will I have to go back through security to get to terminal 4? If so, will I have enough time?

Yes, you will have to go through security again in Terminal 4. If you have checked bags you will have to transfer them yourself as well, making this a very difficult connection. Without checked bags I think you can make it.

  • Connecting flight
    Jan 24, 2017
Hi I am arriving from Copenhagen at 8.05PM in on April 19. I have a connecting flight to Rochester at 10.45PM. I'm not certain of which terminal. Will that be sufficient time to go through immigration and boarding?

What airlines are you flying? Do you have checked bags?

I have only cabin luggage and we are flying Norwegian

We have a delta flight landing at JFK at 8:12am. Our next flight is British airways leaving at 10:25. Will we have enough time to get our checked luggage then check in with BA and get to the gate on time?

I'm assuming the delta flight will be at terminal 2 or 4 and BA leaves from terminal 8.

That will be very difficult. British Airways flights leave from Terminal 7. If you are intent on trying this, I would not check baggage.

  • Is a 2 hour layover enough time?
    Jan 16, 2017
Hi I am flying on June 2, 2017 from Copenhagen to JFK , landing at 8pm in Terminal 5. Is 2 hours enough time to go through immigration, I con't plan to have anything to claim in customs, I'm not checking bags but I need to get to Terminal 1 for a Jet Blue flight at 955pm. This is the latest flight on Jet Blue out of JFK this day. I plan to purchase a fastpass for security through Jet Blue. I just don't want to miss my flight on Jet blue flying back home to San Francisco. Thank you

No flights from Copenhagen arrive in Terminal 5. What airline are you flying? JetBlue uses Terminal 5 - perhaps you have your terminals reversed? If your inbound flight is on Norwegian this is pretty risky as their long-haul flights are often delayed.

Yes I did get them backwards. I'm flying in on Norweigan and flying out on Jet blue.

With no checked bags I think you can make this if the Norwegian flight is on-time.

  • Arrive in JFK, Connection in LGA - doable?
    Jan 15, 2017
We have a flight into JFK from LHR in July on BA. It is scheduled to land at 3:50PM. I used miles for this flight. Now I need to get a ticket to fly home from NYC. It looks like JFK is pricey for domestic flights, LGA is much more reasonably priced. Question: Is it doable to fly into JFK at 350pm and catch a flight from LGA at 750PM? That gives us 5 hours. Can we check in our baggage at JFK, or will we need to go through customs, get our luggage, transfer to LGA and check luggage in?

Yes, that should be possible - note however, that it's 4 hours, not 5. No, you cannot check your baggage in JFK. You will have to take it with you to LGA.

Thanks ZAP. You are correct it's 4 not 5 hours. Would you recommend that connection?

Yeah, you can probably make it, but also be aware that you will be going to LaGuardia at Rush Hour, that it will cost $30-$40 and that there is currently construction at LaGuardia, messing up traffic near it. If the difference in flight costs is less than $50 I wouldn't bother trying to change airports.

the price difference in pricing is about $175-200 per person; there are 4 of us. I am ok with hiring a shuttle or taxi and avoid any public transportation.

Also, we just got back from visiting NYC during the NYE week. We flew into LGA, but out of EWR. LGA construction is something.

  • Aer lingus with JetBlue connection
    Jan 15, 2017
Hi, I am flying from Dublin to Durham, NC via JFK terminal 5. I have booked one ticket for whole flight from Dublin to Durham. Could you please advise if I will need to claim my bags, undergo immigration after arrival to JFK T5? I have layover time of 1h50m between flights but I hope I will be able to stay in secure zone.

You pre-clar US Immigration and Customs in Dublin. All you have to do in JFK is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time.

  • Separate domestic to international transfer
    Jan 14, 2017
Hi, I am arriving at Terminal 8 from Alaska Airlines at 4:07 pm and has another flight in Terminal 1 departing at 7:20 pm (Aeroflot Airlines). It's two separate registrations and I was wondering whether 3 hours is enough for transfer between domestic T8 to international T1 flights. Thank you for the answer!

Yes, that should be enough time if the Alaska flight is on-time.
