Hello. I am planning on buying tickets separately. First flight from MEX to JFK arrives at JFK 15:30 pm. Is it doable to get a flight to Düsseldorf (DUS) at 21:25 pm. Would that be enough time to go through Customs, get baggage check in again, etc.? I have no experience with international connecting flights. Thank you for any answer!!

Yes, that should be enough time. You will be out of customs by 16:30 at the latest, so that leaves plenty of time to take the AirTrain to your departure terminal, check-in, and go through security.

  • is 1:15 min enough time

we are arriving from yul on delta terminal 2 with a transfert delat terminal 4. will we have enough time or should we stress?

That should be enough time if your first flight is on-time. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto. Delta runs a shuttle bus between T2 and T4 inside security.

  • Transfer question
    Jan 1, 2015
I am flying to Tampa on Virgin/Delta via JFK - single e-ticket. I have a 6 hour layover on outward so plenty of time for transfer. I arrive at JFK terminal 4 and I believe I have to go through immigration at JFK and collect bags and then go to JFK terminal 2 to check in for ongoing Delta flight. On the basis that I will have gone through immigration at JFK does the mean that the procedure will be quicker at Tampa when I arrive i.e. I will not have to go through immigration again as I have arrived on an internal flight? On return Delta flight from Tampa via JFK, are bags transferred direct to Virgin flight or do I have to collect them and recheck them in? Is the procedure different than the outgoing flight? I only have a 3 hour layover on return but assume this will be plenty of time. Any help will be appreciated. Sorry if these are silly questions but have always flown direct previously.

Yes, upon arrival in Tampa you only have to go to the baggage claim and claim your bags. Upon leaving the US you do not have to go through US Immigration. You just have to go from your arrival gate to your departure gate in JFK. Delta runs a shuttle bus inside security between T2 and T4.

If I fly in to JFK from Charlotte on US AIr terminal 8 , what is the best way to get my luggage and re-check my luggage and get boarding pass with Air France . thanks

You will need to claim your baggage then take the AirTrain to Terminal 1. Leave at least 2.5 hours for your transfer.

Arriving 2:15pm on Delta (Terminal 2). Leaving 4:10PM Alitalia (terminal 1). Can I make this connection?

Yes, that should be enough time. Your bags should be transferred automatically, all you have to do is take the AirTrain From T2 to T1 and go through security.

Arriving American Airlines JFK from Cancun 21:00 at T8. Depart British Airways at 00:05 from T7 .Is transfer time enough? Will bags need to be re-claimed and re-checked?

Yes, that is enough time.in Terminal 8 you will have to go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then take the AirTrain to T7 and go through security.

Thanks. Reclaim bags etc even though it is an American Airlines flight operated byBA?

  • AMS-JFK-SAT connection
    Dec 30, 2015
I'm a non US citizen flying in from Amsterdam on a KLM/Delta flight, connecting through JFK to a Delta flight to San Antonio. Which terminal(s) will I be arriving and departing from at JFK, and will 4 hours be enough for immigration, customs etc?

You will arrive in Terminal 4, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then go to the departure level, through security and to your departure gate which will also be in Terminal 4. You have plenty of time.

  • AA to Norwegian
    Dec 29, 2015
Is 45 minutes enough time between arrival at T8 and departure T1?

NO! Absolutely not! AA and Norwegian do not have an interline baggage agreement, so you will have to claim your baggage and take it on the AirTrain to re-check. Even without checked baggage it's pretty much impossible.

  • from jet blue T5 in transit to korean air terminal 2-3
    Dec 28, 2014
I will be getting off, from Jet Blue T5, heading to Korean air terminal 2-3, please advise me how to get to Korean air terminal.

Korean Air uses Terminal 1. There is no Terminal 3. TO get from T5 to T3 you will have to take the AirTrain. It takes 10-15 minutes.

  • Question regarding passing through security at different terminals
    Dec 28, 2014
My wife and child are taking an international flight the same night I am taking a domestic flight. Can I proceed through international security to help them get to their gate if I have a domestic ticket that leaves from another terminal?

Not unless they are leaving from Terminal 4 and you are leaving from Terminal 2. Those are the only terminals that are connected inside security.

  • UA SFO-JFK transfer to B6 JFK-BOS
    Dec 28, 2014
Will 1 hour be enough to transfer SFO-JFK UA Z-class to B6 JFK-BOS? No checked bags. Can check-in for B6 online in advance, but no TSA pre (yes Global Entry).

Yes, if you do all that stuff and check-in online you should be able to get from T7 to T5 and go through security in an hour. However, it doesn't leave much time to spare for delays.

  • Transiting through JFK

Hi all, I am flying from Toronto to Abu Dhabi via JFK. I am on two separate bookings and will be traveling with luggage. YYZ to JFK is on American Airlines arriving at terminal 4 at 7:23pm. I will then need to transfer to terminal 8 to fly with Etihad at 9:55pm. If i pre-clear U.S. Customs in Toronto, can I check my bags with AA all the way through to Etihad given that they're partners and I don't have to go through customs? Do I have enough time to make my connection? On the way back, I land at JFK at 5:30pm and my flight back to Toronto is at 8:15pm. As I have to collect my bags on the way back, will I have enough time once again to make this connection back to Toronto? Thanks for all of your help!

You have terminals backwards. You will arrive in 8 and depart from 4. AA is not obligated to check your bags to etihad since you bought separate tickets. Abu Dhabi now has preclearance like Toronto. You barely have enough time.

Hi zap, thanks for the quick reply and for letting me know about pre clearance in Abu Dhabi. When you say I have barely enough time, how long do you figure this connection will take? I'm trying to see how much grace time I have given 2.5 hours between flights on the way there and 2.75 hours on the way back. Thanks!

well, break it down into segments, assume your AA flight get in on-time and you have to transfer your bags yourself. I would guess you'll have your bags in the baggage claim of T8 at about 7:50. Then it will take you about 15-20 minutes to get on the AirTrain to T4 and to the Emirates desk. so you'll be there worst case at about 8:10 if your AA flight is on-time. Which is still 1:45 before your flight, I can't find Etihad's check-in cutoff online but a common one for these airlines is 90 minute, so that only leaves 15 minutes of buffer.

Thanks Zap. I've confirmed with Etihad that 60 minutes is the minimum check-in time with luggage. Given your comments, I've looked into flying into LGA. There is a flight which lands at 5:48pm. Would this be the better option to make the 8:55pm cut-off time to check-in for Etihad? I've estimated 1 hour to de-plane at LGA and pick-up bags, and another 40 minutes to get from LGA to JFK, which should put me into JFK at roughly 7:30pm. This gives me a buffer of approximately 1 hour 20 minutes to check-in with Etihad. This compares to landing directly at JFK at 7:23pm, having one hour to de-plane, pickup bags and transfer terminals, putting me in front of the etihad desk at 8:20pm, and leaving a 30 minute buffer. Thanks! Chris

Yes, the earlier flight into LGA would be a safer option.

  • Short connection In jfk from international flight
    Dec 26, 2014
Hello, when I booked our four tickets from MXP to IAD connecting through JFK our layover time was longer. Through flight schedule changes we now only have an hour and fifteen minutes to go through customs and get to our next flight. Husband and I have Global Entry, the kids do not. I could probably get us switched to a DCA connection that would give us a two hour layover. Am I correct that there is no way we could get through in an hour and fifteen minutes? We arrive at JFK around 1:38 PM on a Tuesday.

I wanted to add we are flying on Delta.

1:15 isn't enough. I would ask to be moved to the DCA flight
