I am booking a Dec flight from Boston to NY JFK arriving at 1:20pm at T5 by JetBlue, then I will go T1 to take a plane leaving US at 3:20pm. I have only cabin luggage, will it be enough time for me to do so? how long will it take from T5 to T1 and by waht transport? Thanks

That should be enough time with only cabin luggage. All Terminals at JFK are connected outside security by the Airtrain.

Hi, I have flight from DFW to JFK (using Delta) arriving at 2:44pm and then to Tel Aviv (using ElAl) leaving at 7:00pm. Tickets were bought separately. 1. Can I ask Delta to issue both tickets at DFW? 2. will it be enough connection time? 3. should I check out luggage and check in again at JFK? if yes, are there any tips to simplify the process?

Delta cannot issue your El Al boarding pass as they will not have access to your reservation. Yes, you will have to transfer your baggage yourself. You will have to claim it in T2 or T4 when you arrive, take it on the AirTrain to T4 (if you arrive in T2), then take it to the El Al counter to check to TLV. You should have plenty of time as long as your first flight is anywhere close to on-time.

Thank you! Do you know if there are any visual tours: of the Terminal 2 - how to get your luggage from luggage claim and Terminal 4 - how to pass the security?

There are no visual tours, just plenty of maps. The route to security is always very clearly marked and very obvious. There will be overhead signs pointing the way to everything.

  • how long of a connection do i need for domestic to domestic

I will arrive in JFK from AUH on Etihad T4 but will be precleared in AUH and its supposed to be treated as a domestic arrival. Arriving at 4:35 PM, and need to fly on to CLE on the same day. The latest flight i can find seems to be Delta (T2) at 7 PM (need to be there 60 mins before i believe), so will i be able to make the connection? What if my flight is a bit late, will i be able to make it? Basically how much time do i need to allow? Thanks

Yes, you could make that connection because of the pre-clearance in Abu Dhabi. You will likely have your baggage (if you're checking bags) by 5:05 PM, it will take you maybe 10 minutes to get to T2, so you'll be in line to check your bags with Delta at T2 by 5:15 - so your flight can be up to 45 minutes late and you'll still be OK.

    thank you!

Hi, I'm considering a flight with Delta from Dublin to New Orleans via JFK. We will have cleared security in Dublin, but have only 1 hour 5 minutes to make the connecting flight to NO. Both are with delta so I was hoping this might be doable? Thanks!!

Yes. it should be doable but doesn't leave much time for delays. You will likely have to take the shuttle bus from T4 to T2 upon arrival.

  • Transfer time from terminal 4 to terminal 1

Would I have enough time to transfer from a Delta flight from Boston arriving at 20.33 to an Air France flight to London departing at 22.30?

Yes, that should be plenty of time. You won't have to do anything with your baggage and both boarding passes should be issued in Boston. You will just have to take the AirTrain to T1 and go through security.

Thanks for you quick response. I should have mentioned that I am a UK citizen and that the flights were booked separately. Does that make a difference?

The citizenship doesn't matter, you don't go through Immigration when leaving the US. However, the flights being booked separately makes a difference - Delta should be able to check your bags through to Air France since they're both in the SkyTeam allowance, but since you bought separate tickets they are not obligated to. If they don't you will have to claim your bags in T2 and then bring your bags with you on the AirTrain to T1 to check with AIr France. It's possible, but leaves very little room for delays.

Will it speed things up if we take cabin luggage only....no waiting for the baggage to be unloaded?

Yes, that will save you quite a bit of time.

Thank you. What a great service

Hi I arrive with Delta on Sunday at 6:01 AM at T4, to connect at 7:00 AM from T2. Is this enough time? Thank you

Yes, it should be enough time. Also it appears that the JFK-SJU Delta flights routinely leave from T4 in addition to T2, so be sure to check the monitors before running off to the T2 shuttle bus.

Thanks a lot. (in a reply further down ZAP mentioned that 2h45 is not enough for T1 to T4. But here it is ??) Where is the luggage drop-of at T4 please ? and will SAA tag my bags for AAL ?

The post below was an international->international connection on two separate tickets. According to this post, it's a domestic->domestic connection on one airline. That's a huge difference. For you, Cornelia, SAA and American do have an interline baggage agreement but they are only obligated to tag your bags to AA for you if you purchased your tickets in a single itinerary. Luggage re-check is right after you exit customs.

Thanks so much ! Actually I posted my follow-up message at the wrong place (Sorry!) It was related to the question below [Arrival SAA from Joburg, to continue with Delta to Haiti]. I purchased the full itinerary with Seat24. Any advice greatly appreciated !

Yes, that should be enough time.

  • JNB to JFK to SEA checked baggage question

Hi I will be arriving at JFK on SAA at terminal 4 at 6.40am and will be going on to SEA on Jetblue at 8.59am at Terminal 5 I am a permanent resident. Do I have to claim recheck my luggage? How do I do this if have to. Have never traveled through JFK with checked luggage. Is there enough time if I have to?

Yes, you will have to claim your baggage after clearing US Immigration in order to clear US Customs. If your tickets were bought together you should then be able to re-check them with JetBlue immediately afterwards. If bought separately you will have to take them with you on the AirTrain to T5 to check. You should have enough time. You can check in for your JetBlue flight before you leave South Africa to save a little time.

  • Only 1 hour 45 min between flights

Hello, I have a flight arriving from Rome at JFK Terminal 1 at 14:10 and then departing from Terminal 4 with Delta Air Lines to Salt Lake City at 15:55. This only gives me 1 hour 45mins to connect between two flights and I am not a US citizen. Can you please tell me if this should be enough time? thanks!

    1. As you arrive at JFK with an airline other than Delta (Delta does not use Terminal 1 /T1) make sure that your bags will be automatically transferred to T2 - Delta's domestic terminal. If you purchased both flights on one ticket, or your 2 airlines have a code-share agreement, your bags will be transferred). 2. As an international arrival at LAX, you will need to go through passport check, pick up bags, go through customs clearance, then re-check-in your bags where indicated. 3. Thereafter, follow signs up to the "Airline Terminals Train' running continuously between all terminals counter-clockwise - your next stops would be T8, T7, T5, T4, T2/3. On arrival at T2, you need to go through security check before proceeding to your connecting gate (T2 hasgates C60-C70). You should have enough time for transfer.

  • Flying from PBI to JFK terminal 1
    Aug 23, 2014

I am considering a flight with Jet Blue from PBI to JFK. Arriving in JFK at 4:52 pm terminal 5 I believe. My overnight flight to Manchester leaves at 7:05 pm with Air France. Is the international flight leaving from Terminal 1 and do I have enough time in between for baggage and check in (does checking in on line for international flight speed anything up). And is the Air Tran my best choice to get between terminals? Any advice greatly appreciated.

Air France does not fly from JFK to Manchester. It is likely operated by Delta. As such it will depart from Terminal 4. The AirTrain is the only way between Terminals. 2 hrs 13 mins is barely enough time for your transfer.

Thank you for your reply. I will look into an earlier flight.

  • 2 hour 45 mins connection time from Terminal 4 to Terminal 1

Hello, I am booking a flight with Caribbean Airlines arriving from Trinidad at JFK Terminal 4 at 13:05 and then departing from Terminal 1 with Air China to Beijing at 15:50. This only gives me 2 hours 45mins to connect between two international flights and I am not a US citizen. Can you please tell me if this should be enough time? Many thanks!

I think that would be very difficult. You probably need to be checked in for your Air China flight by 14:20 so that leaves only 1:15 to get out of customs and to Terminal 1, assuming the Caribbean flight is on-time, which they often are not.

Bummer! Though thank you very much for your reply! Glad I asked before booking!

  • TORONTO TO DUBAI EMIRATES

hello, will be traveling from Toronto to Dubai connecting through JFK flying to JFK via Air Canada so landing in terminal 7. Will be flying out of terminal 4 with Emirates. Only have 1 hour and 20 minutes between flights. Will this be enough time to connect? Everything is purchased on the same ticket. I have a feeling this is really tight..

You will pre-clear US Immigration in Toronto. You will have to get your Emirates boarding pass before you leave Toronto or else you will probably get to T4 after the check-in cutoff. There is no room for any delays or hiccups.

  • DELTA TO ALITALIA

Non US citizens arriving with Delta from Haiti at 5:44 PM and leaving to Milan with Alitalia at 8:30 PM. Do you think we have enough time for custom clearance, baggage claim and re-check, terminal change etc? Will we save much time if we travel with hand luggage only? Thanks

Yes, that should be plenty of time. Your bags should be tagged through to Milan in PAP so you will will be able to re-check them in T4 after going through customs rather than having to take them with you on the Airtrain to T1. Hand luggage will save you time, but again, I think you have enogh time evne with checked baggage.

  • TERMINAL 4 TO TERMINAL 5

My daughter arrives JFK Terminal 4 @ 11am by SQ. Leave for Buffalo from Terminal 5 via Jetblu. Which level is the Airtrain located and what is the fastest way to get to Terminal 5?

There are ample signs to the airtrain. It is actually located outside the terminals so it really isn't on a level. Yes, that is the only way to T5.

  • Enough time for International flight??
    Aug 15, 2014

I will be traveling from DFW on Oct 13th (Columbus Day) to JFK. Then from JFK to Nairobi on Brussels. This is with a tour that starts at JFK (we make our own connecting flight) I was told I should check in at least 3.5 hours before (which seems excessive). My flight thru JFK is non-stop via Delta arriving at 2:55pm and im scheduled to leave for Nairobi at 5:55pm. Is this enough time to get my bags an check them in for the international flight?. I will be leaving from Terminal 1. I can always change my flight but prefer to do non-stop to avoid losing baggage and this is the earliest non stop flight.

Yes, that should be enough time. 3.5 hours is excessive. They just tell people that so people don't try to cut it too close.
