  • JFK Connection flight and checked baggage

Hi, I am a Canadian travelling from Toronto to JFK via TAM Air (Ter 8) arriving at JFK 6.30 pm. Have a connecting flight from Ter 4 at 10.30 pm. I believe I will do pre-customs at Toronto and I do have checked baggage. My question is is there enough time assuming TAM arrives at time to collect my baggage and re-check at Ter 4? Other question is how do I go about collecting the baggage at Ter 8 and go to Ter 4 (Via Air Train?) and re-check. Is 4 hrs enough time or all this? TIA.

You will NOT go through pre-clearance in Toronto (TAM does not use it). 4 hours should be enough time. You will arrive in T8, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through customs, take your bags on the AirTrain to T4 and check them with your other airline.

I am arriving Terminal 4 Jfk on a domestic flight connecting to an international flight on opposite end of concoure B. I have a 1 hour and 10 Minute connection and require wheel chair assistance. Will that be enough time?

    That should be enough time.

Hi, I'm arriving at JFK from Milan at 7:00pm and leaving on an AA flight to Dallas the next day at 6:30am. I was planning on staying at the airport overnight, can I go through security that early? I'm only taking a carry-on so I don't need to check in anything.

No, you can't go through security until the day of your flight. The security checkpoints will reopen about 4:30 or 5 AM.

Hi, i'm traveling from TLV to JFK via El Al arriving at 5:50 am at T4, and hoping on catching a separate-booked flight to AUS via JetBlue departing at 8:08 am at T5. Is there a chance I can make it? My mom is going to go through the same flights but booked together and with checked bags, will that be easier for her (time-wise)?

Yes, that will make it easier for her since she won't have to worry about the bag check cutoff with JetBlue. It's possible to make it with two separate bookings, but it won't be easy. Perhaps you could have her check both bags under her name with El Al in TLV, so then you wouldn't have to transfer any bags yourself from El Al to JetBlue.

Do you have to leave Terminal 4 or go through security to get from Level 1 Arrivals (domestic) to the Terminal 4 Departure Levels (international)? Because I have already booked an international flight on Kuwait Airways (web says departs from Terminal 4) from New York JFK to London Heathrow which departs at 9:45pm. No checked luggage, only carry-ons. I am trying to decide whether it is worth a little more to book the San Francisco SFO to JFK flight on Virgin America (which lands in Terminal 4) instead of our usually preferred airline (which lands in a different terminal) if that will allow the layover time to be cut down from 6 hours and 45 minutes to 3 hours 45 minutes or even 2 hours?

If you fly Virgin America you can go directly to your Kuwait Airways departure gate without exiting security. However, you will probably have to get your Kuwait Airways boarding pass from either the Kuwait Airways gate, or the Kuwait airways check-in counter outside security. Either Way 3:45 is plenty of time.

My flight from Rome to San Diego on Delta has 1 hour and 40 connection time at JFK. Is this enough time to get through customs and immigration? Delta says this is a "legal flight" but I don't think this is enough time.

Yes, that should be enough time if the flight from Rome is on-time.

  • 1 Hr 25 Min enough time to go from domestic to INTL flight?

I'm looking at flying from Orlando (MCO) to JFK on Jet Blue with an arrival time of 8:35 AM in order to make what would be a separately ticketed Cathay Pacific Flight to Hong Kong which departs at 10:00AM. That gives me 1 hr 25 min to grab my bag, transit to the new terminal, check bag, and go through security. Will I have enough time to make the connection?

It's not impossible, but it will be very difficult to make it to T7 bag check on-time unless your Jetblue flight is quite early and your bags come out quickly.

Thank you! How much time should I allocate between flights to ensure I make it?

I am traveling from Orlando to Tel Aviv via JFK. Taking Jet Blue to JFK and then El Al to TLV. Heard I do not have to get my bags and go thru security again at JFK...is that true? Need to know for time considerations. Thanks

You will have to go through security at JFK since you will arrive in Terminal 5 and depart from Terminal 4 and they are not connected inside security.

My Flight AA will land in JFK at 19:50 and I assume it's in terminal 8 and have the connection to Washington 21:30 (AA flight only)which is 1hr 40 mins connecting time. Should i get my luggage and recheck again in JFK and does 1hr 40 mins enoght for connecting..as it might be the last flight for that day. Do we get any express service boarding pass in london to clear everything easily in JFK.

I forgot to mention that...tickets purchased on one reservation

Yes, that should be enough time. There is no express service. Upon arrival at JFK you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go through security.

Will there be any charge for rechecking the checked bags

Since the flight is part of an international itinerary there is no charge to re-check the bags.

my father in law is flying from dominican republic to JFK with delta arriving 6:25 am at terminal 4, has transfer flight with cathay pacific at terminal 1 heading to hong kong at 2:25 pm the same day. can he step out from Jfk airport between his flight to buy something from a local store ?

Cathay uses Terminal 7, not terminal 1. Yes, he can go wherever he wants after he arrives as he will be in the United States and outside security.

    Thanks so much!

  • ARN->JFK->SFO: 2H 6M enough?

We are flying off in a few hours from Stockholm (ARN) for our final destination San Francisco (SFO). Our connection at JFK is 2 hour 6 minutes. Some of us have green cards and some of us have US passports. Do we need to pick up our luggage at JFK and go through immigration and customs there? Or can we do so at SFO?

Forgot to mention that we are flying with Delta from start to finish.

Yes, in JFK you will arrive in Terminal 4, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go through security and to your departure gate, which will also be in Terminal 4.

    That should be enough time.

I am flying on KLM the whole way, both tickets on the same reservation. Will I be forced to leave and go through security again at JFK? Will I have to recheck my bags? Do I go through customs at JFK or at KEF? Thanks!

Forgot to mention -- the KLM flights are being operated by Delta and I know I am landing in JFK terminal 4

You do not go through US Customs when leaving the US. All you have to do in JFK is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You will go through Schengen passport control when you get to Keflavik.

Thanks so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to answer everyone's questions here

  • JFK - need to step out of airport

I will be arriving into JFK from Cayman Islands via Jet Blue. I need to step out of the airport (to Best Buy about 5 miles away) to make a purchase. I will then return to JFK to take an onward Emirates flight to Mumbai. Can I transfer my check in bags to the Mumbai flight and then leave the airport ? What about immigration & customs ? Where will I get a taxi ?

There are taxis outside every terminal, but you need to make it clear that you are not going to Manhattan, you are staying in Queens. You will go through US Immigration and Customs when you arrive from the Cayman Islands. After you do so you will be outside security. If your bags are tagged through to BOM then you can re-check your bags at the re-check desk, otherwise If the Emirates check in counter is open you can re-check your bags with them then, then go to Best Buy. If the Emirates check in counter is not open and your bags are not tagged through to BOM then you will need to bring your bags with you to Best Buy. There is no US Immigration or Customs when leaving the US. So all you have to do when you return, assuming you already have your Emirates boarding passes, is go through security.

Thank so very much ! Really appreciate your quick and very comprehensive response !

We are flying in from London Heathrow to JFK with Delta arriving at 14:34 into Terminal 4. Our next flight to Columbus is at 18:25 departing from Terminal 4.I also believe with Delta. As we are arriving and departing from the same terminal will we have to go through security in JFK or only when we arrive in Colombus? We bought all our flights together, so I'm guessing our luggage should go from London to Columbus or will we have to collect and re-check in?

Upon arrival in JFK you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk immediately after, then go through security and to your departure gate, even though you will be given the boarding passes for both the LHR-JFK and JFK-CMH flights and your bags will be tagged to CMH in London.

My husband and I are flying back from ireland on aer lingus and arriving at jfk at 240. We need to make a flight home at 405. Will we have time to go through customs, grab luggage, recheck our bags, and make our flight? Is the air train easy to use? Thanks

Hi, I will fly next Sunday from Miami to Milano (Italy) through New York JFK. Do you if I should take my luggage and do again the check in in New York?

What airline or airlines are you flying? Were your tickets purchased on one reservation or two separate reservations? I can't answer your question without that information.
