  • Connection Time between WestJet & AA

Looking at a flight from YYZ (Toronto) on WestJet to SJU (San Juan) that connects with American Airlines at JFK but only have 2h5min connection -- is this enough time to clear immigration/customs and make the American Airlines flight or would we be pushing it?

WestJet does not fly from YYZ to JFK. They fly from Toronto to LaGuardia in New York. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto but since it's two different airports that's not enough time.

My apologies, it's not from YYZ, it's actually from YYC (Calgary) to JFK. I found the itinerary on travelocity.ca (I'm actually originating in YZF, so I have to do 2 connections unfortunately). Is that enough time? Can I pre-clear customs in Calgary? Flight lands at JFK at 16:55, departs at 19:00 on a Friday evening to SJU.

Yes, you will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Calgary. If both tickets are on the same reservation then you just have to take the AirTrain from Terminal 4 to Terminal 8, get your AA boarding pass, and go through security. You should have enough time. If it's two separate reservations you'll have to claim your bags from Westjet in T4 first before going to T8.

I'm not sure I totally understand the two reservation thing, sorry -- if I book using a website like travelocity for YZF to SJU it gives me the option to fly WestJet to YYC then to JFK then I connect with AA to SJU. It's one booking on the website, though technically two companies, so how is that treated -- as one reservation or two? I'm sorry if that sounds stupid. I've actually never changed airlines before -- every time I've ever flown it's been the one airline straight through so bags were checked on through. Would it be helpful if we went carry-on only? Thanks so much.

That will be treated as one reservation and your bags will be checked through to San Juan and you won't have to do anything with them at JFK.

Returning home on a direct flight with American Airlines from terminal 8 at 7.00pm I must first get a Delta flight the same day from Washington DCA to terminal 4 JFK which arrives at 2.15pm. I am concerned if there is sufficient time to clear immigration, collect my case, make my way to terminal 8 and check my case in with American Airlines for my homeward flight. I would appreciate if someone could advise if I will have enough time to negotiate the airport in time for my flight home ?

There is no US Immigration when flying from Washington DC to JFK. All you have to do is claim your bags, take them to T8 on the AirTrain, re-check them with American, and go through security. You have plenty of time.

Thanks greatly for this feedback info.

hi I am flying from Aruba by JetBlue to terminal 5 and connecting to EVA air on terminal 1. I have checked bags. The tickets are bought separately. Do I have to collect the checked bags and go through custom and check in again at JFK?

You will pre-clear US Immigration and customs in Aruba. However, you will have to claim your bags from JetBlue, take them on the AirTrain with you to T1, re-check them with Eva, and go through security.

Thank you and appreciate your clear response. Extremely helpful

I am arriving from Las Vegas at 550AM via Jetblue at Terminal 5, then will be catching my Toronto flight via American Airlines at Termina 8l , 925am, with a checked in baggage in both flights. Is 3 hours enough time for me to catch the 925am flight?

Yes, that should be enough time. You will have to transfer your bags yourself between JetBlue and American on the AirTrain.

    Thank you

Flying into Term 7 on BA from LHR, connecting in Term 7 to Cathay for flight to YVR. Will I need to go through immigration??

Yes, you will have to go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, and go through security.

Hello, I arrive with Swissair flight from Zurich to JFK on Wednesday at 3.45pm. I then have another flight from JFK to Montreal at 8.05pm with Delta. The flights are on separate tickets so I need to pick up my luggage, pass customs/immigration and check in again, then presumably pass security/passport check again as well. Do I have enough time to do all of this, or should I rather go without checked luggage? Thanks

Yes, that should be enough time. You will arrive in Terminal 4, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then take your bags to the Delta check-in desk also in Terminal 4, check your bags, and go through security. You will go through Canadian immigration and customs when you get to Montreal.

Hi I am flying Air Lingus from Dublin to JFK wth an onward connection to SJU with Jet Blue. I arrive 13:40 and connect at 17:11 ........... All things being equal. This is a codeshare agreement and on one ticket. All baggage will be checked through to SJU. I will pre-clear US Customs and Immigration in Dublin. Being that I arrive into T5 - effectively as an 'internal flight' and depart from T5, will this be a 'sterile transfer', thus avoiding security or will I have to go through it all again? Thanks Mike

Yes, all you have to do in JFK is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have plenty of time.

    Many thanks ...... that's a relief😀

Hi i am travelling by emirates from dubai to fort lauderdalr via jfk. On my baggage tag it says final destination name. So do i have to collect my baggage in jfk and recheck it or will i be gettingn directly in fort lauderdale. My terminals are dubai to jfk on terminal 4 and from jfk terminal 5 to fort lauderdale. Please also let me know on which terminal of jfk i have to collect baggage if at all i have to collect baggage. Thanks

Yes, you still have to claim your bags in JFK to go through US Customs. You will collect your bags in Terminal 4 right after going through US Immigration. You can then re-check them at the re-check desk right after clearing customs in T4.

    THANKS...

I am flying on Jetblue to JFK and need to transfer to Delta international. How can I stay inside security to transfer and how long will it take?

You can't stay inside security. If you have checked bags you need at least 3 hours between flights. Without checked bags you can make it with 2-2.5 hours.

My flight the Monday before Thanksgiving arrives at terminal 8 at 2:44pm and then I have to get to terminal 1, check in a bag, go through security, and get to my gate for a flight that leaves 7:22pm. That is around 4 1/2 hours assuming everything gets in on time. Is that enough time? They are two separate tickets, so I will have to pick up the luggage from the one flight and then check it in for the next. I haven't used JFK enough to be familiar with how long it takes. Thanks for any help or advice!

Yes, that should be enough time. What airlines are you flying?

Hi, my flight arrives in JFK at 1215pm (Singapore Airlines) and I plan to take a flight to RDU. Would it be advisable to take a 340pm (Delta Airlines) or 5pm (American Airlines) flight? Thank you!

    I think either would work.

I'm flying into terminal 1 on Jet blue at 21:53, and out of terminal 1 at :20 on EVA. Do I exit security and back in? Is this enough time? Do iI take the tran?

Yes, you will have to take the AirTrain to T1 and go through security. Do you mean 00:20 is your departure time? If so that should be plenty of time.

Do I need to get all my checked bags? I assume they are checked through. Is this correct?

Yes, that is correct if both flights are on the same reservation. There is no US Customs when leaving the US.

Hi all, I am flying to JFK with BA from London Heathrow arriving 13:10 at T8. I want to catch a Delta flight to Rochester at 16:40pm from T4. Is 3h30 enough time for immigration, baggage reclaim and baggage drop off (check-in will have been completed online). Will I make it? AirTrain the best transport for this case? Thanks!!

By the way: This will be on a Sunday and these are two separate tickets

BA flights do not arrive in Terminal 8. BA operated flights arrive in Terminal 7. AirTrain is the only way between terminals. Yes, that should be enough time if everything goes smoothly. You will have to take your bags with you to T4 to re-check them with Delta.

Thanks!!!Flight is booked with BA but is operated by American Airlines. So maybe it dies arrive in T8. Does it make a difference timewise? Or there is still enough time under normal circumstances?

Then it does arrive in T8. It's not much of a difference in terms of time.
