I'm flying from St Maarten to London via JFK. I have 2 hours on the ground. Will I have to go through immigration and pick up my luggage at JFK?

Yes, if all your tickets are on the same reservation, you will arrive in JFK, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go through security and to your departure gate. You have just enough time.

  • Traveling with toddlers

Hello I am traveling from Bahrain to San Frnacisco with a layover in Paris and JFK. I will have my 22 month old toddler in tow and am traveling alone. We will be on Gulf Air/American airlines. Any advice on getting through JFK intenrnational to domestic with a 4 hour lay over will be appreciated. Will there be someone to help me transfer bags?

If your bags are checked through to San Francisco you just have to claim your bags to bring them through US Customs then can immediately re-check them. There will be carts to use in the international baggage claim area.

Is American Airlines AA4058 from YYZ ro JFK on 18 JAN 2016 an international flight?

You pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto.

So when i arrive in JFK i will arrive at the domestic area instead of the international area?

You will be released into the general gate area of Terminal 8. You will not be funneled to immigration. If you have checked bags and are ending your trip in New York you will claim them in the domestic baggage claim area.

  • Ideal arrival time on 12/25 for international flight with 1 local stop
    Dec 23, 2015
I am traveling with my young son to the Dominican Republic via AA on 12/25/15 on the 8:10am flight with a stopover in Charlotte, NC. Do I have to arrive at the airport 3 hours in advance to clear customs? It will be hard to get in tow with a kid in tow before 6am. Is 2 hours enough time to go through ticketing, security, etc?

No, you do not go through customs in New York or Charlotte. There is no US Customs when leaving the US. All you have to do in JFK is check your bags and go through security and all you have to do in Charlotte is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. 2 hours should be plenty of time.

Do you think arriving one hour or 90 minutes in advance of our flight is cutting it too close? i am hoping that the airport won't be very busy on X-mas day. Thanks.

Xmas day itself is not a particularly busy day, but I'd still try to be there 90 minutes early.

  • Transit from Johannesburg to Toronto - where to get Air Canada Boardin
    Dec 17, 2015
Transiting from SAA203 raring from J'burg and connecting to Toronto - can you please tell me where I drop my bag and get a boarding pass for Air Canada? Thanks SJ

If you purchased your ticket on a single reservation and your bags are tagged through to YYZ you re-check your bags at the re-check desk right after clearing customs. If you purchased two separate reservations and your bags are only tagged to JFK you will have to take them to the Air Canada check-in desk in Terminal 7.

No, that is 5 minutes shorter than the minimum International to Domestic connection time at JFK and 35 minutes shorter than I recommend.

i have a flight to jfk on american airlines 4309 and a friend coming in on LAN532. Will I able to meet her before crossing the immigration passport control together?

American 4309 is a domestic flight - you don't have to go through immigration/passport control.

So is there no way that I can meet my friend before immigration controls or wait for her at the baggage area? Am I right to say that domestic flights and international flights do not arrive at the same area in the arrival halls?

Correct. When you arrive you will come out on the same level that people wait for their departing flights on. Your friend will be sent down secure corridors to Immigration, the International baggage claim and customs. You can meet her at the exit of customs, which should be on the lower level.

  • jfk terminal 8 domestic & international
    Dec 7, 2015
Hi, I'd be arriving on a domestic flight at JFK from Washington and I have a next flight to Korea at Terminal 8 as well. Are the domestic and internationl terminals the same or are they separate?

Terminal 8 is just one terminal. All gates are connected. However, there are no nonstop flights to Seoul that leave from Terminal 8. Are you making a stop first? What airline are you flying?

  • How many hours in advance should I arrive at the airport
    Dec 3, 2015
My flight is at 8:05PM (Flight #83) from JFK to SAN. How many hours in advance should I arrive at the airport during christmas holidays?

90 minutes if you don't have checked bags, 2 hours if you have checked bags, just to be safe. But less than that is doable.

  • Transfer from Terminal 3 to 8
    Nov 30, 2015
Hi, arriving on the 16th of December on AA0105 from LHR, next flight AA0235 at 2015 to Boston, does this seem enough time? All booked on the same ticket, Also, on the way back I have a 7 hour wait, any suggestions greatly received!

JFK no longer has a Terminal 3. All AA flights are in Terminal 8. Your transfer times seem sufficient.

Thanks Zap,says terminal 3 on the ticket but if it's all in termina 8 then hopefully it will be fine

Where did you buy that? It's probably means you leave from LHR Terminal 3. In JFK you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, and go through security.

My bad and you're right! Flying from LHR Terminal 3!! Thanks for your help:)

  • Connection
    Nov 17, 2015
Hi, I'm about to book a flight wich will arrive with klm at 7:34pm at jfk. Now I only found a connection to minneapolis with sun country air at 9:00pm. Is it possible to make this flight with re-checking in my bag? Or do you know any other options?

No, that wouldn't be possible. If you want to take that flight into New York you'll probably have to spend the night there and fly out to MSP in the morning. Otherwise find another route.

  • Jetblue 21 hour layover
    Nov 11, 2015
I am surprising my wife and we are flying to Grand Cayman for her 40th birthday. I purposely purchased a return flight that has us stopping at JFK for an extended layover so she we can have dinner, breakfast and lunch in her favorite city. My question is, what is Jetblue's standard luggage procedure for such a long layover? WIll they keep our luggage stowed in the aircraft or we will claim it and have to recheck it the next day? This will also determine if I have clothes shipped to the hotel we are staying at that evening. Thank you!

You will have to claim it and check it the next day.

  • Meet
    Nov 10, 2015
Iam arriving at terminal 5. And friend is arriving terminal 8 were is best place to meet

Probably the Arrivals level of the terminal of whoever is arriving later. If you plan on taking the AirTrain into the city. You could also meet at the airtrain transfer station.

  • Recommed bus time from Port Authority
    Nov 7, 2015
Hi, I'm arriving from Malaysia at JFK at 4.30am. I'm thinking of taking the Airporter to Port Authority at 6.30am. I read that this is an open return ticket so i dont really need to lock in a specific time. From Port Authority, I"m leaving at 10am to DC via Greyhound. Is that too much time in between? Would I be able to book an earlier bus from Port Authority? It'll be quite tiring travelling so long..

You'll get to the Port Authority about 7:30, maybe a little after. So you'd have a little over 2 hours to kill at the Port Authority. There is stuff to do there at least.

  • Customs Broker Help with Accompanied baggage
    Nov 6, 2015
I will be arriving at JFK with commercial samples in my accompanied luggage. If I run into a challenge at U.S. Customs, can you recommend a customs broker who is accustomed to helping individual people (I am not part of a big corporation). Thanks
