  • Waiting at terminal 4
    May 13, 2015
Hi, I am arriving with my wife and two daughters at 7:30 AM. The person who will pick us up at the airport cannot get there till 10:30 AM. Two questions: 1. How much time would it take to de-plane, clear immigration and customs and collect baggage? 2. After collecting the bags is there a place to wait in the arrivals hall? We are not US citizens. Thanks, Adi

  • Do I need a visa if I am flying into JFK in transit to Canada?
    Mar 11, 2015
Hi there and thank you for any help in this matter... Because of a family emergency and the short notice I had to book a flight to JFK (from Dubai), and a flight 4 hours later to Toronto. Will I need any kind of visa if I am a Canadian Citizen? Thank you so much, cheers!

  • Expedited Immigration Screening If Your Last Name is Hyphenated!??!
    Feb 23, 2015
Just wanted to share this bit of information: when connecting through JFK this past Friday after an international flight, I scanned my U.S. Passport at the Immigration kiosk, answered the customary questions, and received a receipt marked with an "X" for the expedited security line. I was surprised as I don't have Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, and had not otherwise paid for any kind of expedited security service. I inquired when I reached the agent at the counter, and he informed me that the person who wrote the program for the kiosks failed to make allowances for hyphenated last names (such as mine), and that for some reason, the kiosks reacted to that by identifying everyone with a hyphenated name as someone entitled to expedited screening. The 30 minutes I saved in that line almost made up for the years of confusion that my hyphenated last name has caused when making reservations! ;) Just thought I'd share.

  • Boston to London Heathrow - layover JFK for 1hr 15mins
    Feb 13, 2015
Hi, my AA flight comes from Boston to JFK at 9.03pm and my AA connection flight for London Heathrow leaves at 10.20pm. Will 1hr 15mins be enough between connections? Do I need to collect luggage, re-checkin, switch terminals? Thanks!

If your flight to London is operated by AA all you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, both in Terminal 8. If your flight from Boston is on-time you will have plenty of time.

  • Layover time?
    Feb 3, 2015
Hi, everyone! :) I'm flying from Tel-Aviv to JFK via El-Al and then taking a connecting flight to Chicago with JetBlue. There's a two-hour window between the flights - will that be enough to make it from Terminal 4 to Terminal 5? Is there anything I should do to prepare beforehand?

Yes, if your flight is on-time that should be enough time. if you purchased your tickets together you will arrive in T4, go through US Immigration, collect your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then take the AirTrain from T4 to T5, get your JetBlue boarding pass if you don't already have it, go through security and to your departure gate.

Flying with Delta from Dublin to LA, connecting flight at JFK with a 3 and half hour layover. When I arrive at JFK will i have to claim my bags and re-check them in or are the automatically transferred? Arrive in T2 at JFK and depart from T2

No, you will not. You will pre-clear US Immigration and customs in Dublin. Also, both of your flights will be in Terminal 4, not Terminal 2.

  • Clearing Immigration & Airport Lounge
    Jan 25, 2015
I'm flying into JFK on a Tuesday Lunchtime with my family. Any ideas as to how busy the immigration & customs halls will be at that time? Also,is there a nice private airside lounge in Terminal 4 that I could book in advance? Thanks in advance.

There are no "private" lounges. You could buy passes for the Delta SkyClub. Immigration halls will probably be somewhat busy at that time of day as lots of flights from Europe arrive at that time.

Thanks. Subject to a scheduled landing of 11:45, I've booked our transfer for 13:30. I'm hoping that'll be enough time?

That should be barely enough time. You won't have any time to spend in a lounge anyway.

  • Time to get thru passport control, customs and baggage claim
    Jan 20, 2015
I'm arriving on the Tuesday afternoon around 4 and taking a taxi to my hotel. How long should I expect to take for get thru customs, etc after landing? If I tell the taxi a pickup time of 5:30, is this a good estimate? Thanks!

You'll probably be out a little closer to 4:45 or 5.

    Thanks ZAP!!

  • getting from T1 to T4
    Feb 3, 2015
Hello! My friend who does not speak English arrives from Moscow (SU0102) at 5.25 p.m. Terminal 1. Then he departures to Toronto (Dl 4242) from Terminal 4 at 8.45 p.m. I need to give him instructions) Please help! 1. How to get from T1 to T4? Does he need to take baggage, and register it again? What about the customs then? 2. Does he have enough time for everything? And moreover he needs to pay for extra luggage to Delta as jis ticket has 0 pc included. Thank you a lot!

T1 and T4 are connected by the AirTrain. After he arrives in Terminal 1 he will go through US Immigration, claim his bags, and go through US Customs. If he bought his tickets together he can re-check them in Terminal 1 at the transfer desk, otherwise he has to take them to Terminal 4 and pay to check them. Note that he will need a US Transit Visa if he is a Russian citizen.

Dear ZAP, Thank you! I got lost..can you clarify please again..step by step, please. I need to give detailed instruction to my non-English speaking friend where to go exactly and what to do next. Sorry.. what tickets do you mean? For flight or for luggage? For flight he has different tickets, bought through different agents. 1) He takes his luggage and will go through US Immigration with them, right? in Terminal 1? 2) Next he will go through US Customs. In T1? Right? 3) He takes AirTrain (where is the stop? outside the terminal?) 4) After arriving to T4 he goes to Delta transfer desk and pay for luggage right? He will get boarding passfrom the same person, right? He checks his luggage there as well. Right? 5) He goes to the gate? What if he would check-in with Delta online? and pay for luggage at the same time? Shall he take his luggage to T4 then or he can recheck it in T1? Where exactly) Sorry for so detailed questions. Thank you!!

Tickets are whether be purchased his flights all at once or if he purchased them in two separate purchases, one from Aeroflot and one from Delta. If he purchased his flights in one purchase he will: Arrive in T1, go through passport control, claim his baggage, go through US Customs, re-check his baggage at the transfer desk, take the AirTrain to T4, and go through security and to his departure gate. If he purchased his flights separately in two separate purchases he will: Arrive in T1, go through Passport control, claim his bags, go through Customs, take his bags with him on the AirTrain to T4, check his bags at the Delta check-in desk (whether he checked in online or not), then go through security and to his departure gate.

Thank you a lot for thi clarifications! Last question - how to get to AirTrain in Terminal 1, where is the platform? And when does it stop at T4? (i it eay to find Departures from there?) Thank you!!

Just follow the signs. They will be very clearly marked.

  • Where to pay for extra luggage?
    Jan 12, 2015
Hi! I will be travelling from JFK to Toronto with Delta Airlines later this month. My ticket shows 0 pc luggage allowance. Where can I pay for my luggage? I found info about the cost but where and how to pay is the question. Thank you for any reply!

You can pay when you check in online with Delta. If you are not able to check in online you will pay at the airport. Note that they only accept credit and debit cards.

Thank you for your answer! Just to clarify - I can pay at the airport while check-in, right> to the same person? I am very tight on time (flight from Moscow). They do not accept cash? Thank you!

Correct. You can pay at the check in desk with a credit card.

  • Transit from Terminal 1 to Terminal 8
    Nov 2, 2014
I am going from morocco to Cancun in Mexico, I have a mexican Visa. I am going to change flight in JFK where I have to go from Terminal 1 to Terminal 8. I don't have a USA visa. What should I do?

If you are a Moroccan citizen you have to get a US Transit visa. Otherwise you won't be allowed on the plane.

  • Line for Canadians together with US greend cards and citizens at JFK?
    Oct 20, 2014
hi, I'll be arriving at JFK T1 next Sunday from Paris. I'm a Canadian Citizen and I'm traveling with my friend who has a green card. Will we have to go in separate lines or is there a line for US citizens+green card+ Canadians like at US immigration in Toronto? thank you

Pretty sure it will be separate lines. Canadian citizens don't get preferential treatment at facilities in the US.

  • Where do you go thru customs if flight is to Toronto from JFK?
    Oct 13, 2014
Have a flight Sunday from JFK to Toronto- am a Can'd citizen, so do I go thru customs there- or at Toronto, have a connecting flight out later to east coast. Was told I go thru customs upon arrival in Toronto? Since I'll be in a wheelchair for assistance to the plane, can I get a porter in JFK to help with my suitcase?

On your trip to Toronto you will go through Canadian Immigration and customs when you arrive in Toronto. The wheelchair assistance person will make sure that your luggage is transported with you.
