Kuala Lumpur KUL Airport Overview

Kuala Lumpur International Airport KUL, or simply ‘KLIA’,  is one of Southeast Asia's major aviation hubs, and has received from Skytrax a four-star rating, and the 2010 World Airport Awards for Best Airport for Immigration Services and Staff Service Excellence in the Southeast Asia category.  It was also ranked as number nine among the world's top 25 airports. KLIA  serves the Klang Valley metropolitan & Greater Klang Valley regions, Sah Alam, Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor & South Perak, a key economic area of Malaysia. From the air, the Airport looks like a futuristic structure hidden in a remote jungle.

The Airport is located on the Malay Peninsula in the Sepang District, 50 km from the City of Kuala Lumpur, the Capital of Malaysia, and is accessible directly from Kuala Lumpur via the North-South Central Link Expressway (ELITE) or its secondary access via the eastern route linking the Nilai Interchange with the Airport. 

With two very long runways and an estimated 36.6 million passengers in 2011, Kuala Lumpur International is hub to Air Asia, Firefly Jet, and Malaysia Airlines, and is served by a myriad of national and international airlines offering direct and connecting flights to all parts of the globe.  Transaero, Russia's second-largest airline, is now offering Saturday flights to Moscow.

On-Airport Hotels: (a) The 5-star Pan Pacific Hotel KLIA (tel. +603 8787 3333 /fax 5555), adjacent to the terminal, is served by a free shuttle service.
(b) the Airside Transit Hotel (tel. +603 8787 4848 /fax 4747) is inside the Satellite Building of KLIA - next to gate C5.

Checking-in & Baggage check-out services at KL City Air Terminal  ('KL CAT') located at Kuala Lumpur Central - a virtual extension of KL Airport: City check-in services are provided by an increasing number of airlines, and the KLIA Express offers baggage check-out services, whereby passengers can collect their bags & declare taxable items at KL CAT.

The Passenger Terminal Complex at Kuala Lumpur International Airport presently consists of a large Terminal 1, Satellite A & the Low-Cost Carrier Termina (LCCT)l:

Rental car booths are located (a) in the Arrival Hall: (Avis at counter C6; Hertz at counter B10; Kasina Baru at counter B16;  Mayflower at Counter C1; Orix at Counter C2; Insas Pacific at Counter C4); and (b) In the Carpark Pantas at Lot CR17, Block D.
 
To get from the airport to your destination, you can rent a car, take a taxi, a bus or a train:
The KLIA Ekspres train (wheelchair accessible) offers the the quickest way to city , taking only 28 minutes, and running 5am-1am, every 15 minutes (6am-9am & 4pm-10pm), every 20 minutes (5am-6am, 9am-4pm & 10pm-midnight), and every 30 minutes after midnight.
1. Taxis: ‘Airport Limo’ offers taxi & limo services to Kuala Lumpur & Selangor, with four types of services: budget taxi; premier limo, super luxury, and family service for up to 8 passengers. You can obtain a coupon at the following counters located in the arrivals hall of the main terminal: (i) just after customs, before public arrival area of international arrivals hall; (ii) public area after domestic baggage clearance of domestic arrival hall; (iii) on the arrival level of domestic baggage reclaim.
2. Buses: (a) City Express (+603 8787 3894) has a bus station on the ground level of short-term carpark Block C, which includes a seating area, ticketing counter, cafe, & restrooms. (b) Aerobus (+603 3344 2999) to Klang, Shah Alam. (c) Airport Liner (+6016 228 4351) to Nilai & LCCT. (d) City Liner (+606 794 1494) to LCCT & Banting. (e) Sepang Omnibus (+6016 296 5332) to Banti, Nilai Bukit & Changgang. (f) Star Shuttle (+603 4043 8811 to Pudu Raya, Batu 3, Jalan Ipoh, to hotel at KL town center, and to Medan Gopeng, Bercham (Ipoh).
3. Trains: Express Rail Link (tel. +603 2267 8088) operates the KLIA Ekspres & the KLIA Transit lines, connecting to the city center and ending at the KL City Air Terminal (‘KL CAT’):
The KLIA Transit commuter train stops at Bandar Tasik Selatan, at Putrajaya & Cyberjaya, and at Salak Tinggi; departs every 30 minutes and takes 35 minutes to city center.

Future Airport Developments:  1. The present LCCT is a temporary terminal - a new KLIA2 low-cost terminal will replace it in April 2012 and will then be served by the Aerotrain. 
2. Construction is to begin for a new Terminal 2 and its satellite terminal, identical to terminal 1's satellite - no details are yet available.
