  • Layover - enough time and what to do?
    Nov 25, 2015
Hello, I have a stopover in LAX from EWR on United and will be travelling internationally to PPT on a different reservation than the domestic flight. If I allow 4 hours between flights is that appropriate? If not, more? Is less OK? Also, after arriving, will I be going through security again? I have access to the United Club & Star Alliance Club. Will I be able to access those after I've gone through whatever security I may need to go through? Thanks in advance!

That should be enough time. The Air Tahiti Nui check in counter doesn't open until about 9 PM so there will actually be a line of people standing there waiting for it to open when you get there. Once you check in and go through security you will be in the secure area of the International Terminal. You cannot use the lounge in the International Terminal as there are no United Clubs there and to use the Star Alliance lounge you must either be flying First or Business class on a Star Alliance carrier or be Star Gold and flying on a Star Alliance carrier, which Air Tahiti Nui is not.

Thank you so much for the quick response. I am actually flying Qantas, operated by Air Tahiti Nui which I doubt changes much. I have the option of arriving at LAX at 724 PM or 754 PM with the Qantas flight departing at 1140 PM. I might as well sacrifice the half hour and take the early flight to make sure I'm there with time to spare, right? As for the lounge, I have paid access with the United Club card and will have flown in on a Star Alliance flight... maybe they'll be nice and bend the rules! Thanks again!

It is an Air Tahiti Nui flight, so you will go to the Air Tahiti Nui check in desk, not the Qantas check-in desk. Yes, no reason not to take the 7:24 PM arrival.

  • Moving between terminals
    Oct 28, 2015
I arrive at the International terminal at 7am and have booked a subsequent flight at Noon in Terminal 4. I'm trying to figure out the best lounge access so I can shower in-between. After I check in at Terminal 4 and go through customs can I still move between terminals?

You will go through Customs in the International terminal when you arrive. When you go through security in Terminal 4 you will have access to Terminals 4, 5, and 6. There are showers in the Terminal 4 Admirals Club.

  • Is this enough time
    Dec 18, 2014
Hello. Wondering if a layover of 2.05 hours will be enough at LAX. Arriving from Narita on Singapore Air @ 1:25pm connecting on a Southwest flight to STL at 3:30pm. We are 5 traveling with most likely 4-5 check bags. I am an Southwest A list member so should be able to skip any long security and check bags lines and be able to board early on Southwest. Thank you.

That should barely be enough time. You will have to hope that your first flight is on-time and hurry with your bags to T1 in order to get your bags to the counter before the cutoff.

  • LayOver 12 Hours
    Nov 19, 2014
Question, Flying (AA) POS-MIA-LAX-KONA (Lax layover is 12hours) 1) Will I have to re-check my bag for LAX-KOA flight which 8:45 am next morning? 2) Will I have to pay any fees for checked bag (US25.00)

Ask the AA agent in POS if they can tag your bag through to KOA. If they can then you won't claim it in LAX. Otherwise you will have to claim it and recheck it in the morning and pay the fee.

  • Long Layover
    Nov 4, 2014
Hi, We are looking at having a 16 hour layover at LAX before our flight home to Aus with QANTAS. We don't want to have to leave the airport - are there any decent airport lounges that allow you to pay for day use that are landside? We will get a hotel for the day if we have to though, any suggestions for a good hotel close to the airport? TIA

I'm not aware of any landside lounges at LAX. If there is more than one person in your party it would probably be best to get a hotel room. Sorry, I can't recommend one.

  • SFO - LAX - HNL --> stopover 35 minutes
    Nov 4, 2014
Hello all, I just booked a Delta flight via San Francisco via LAX to Honolulu, but the stop over time is only 35 minutes :( I booked that flight together, so should be okay or else why should the booking tool give this option? Arrival time LAX 16.30 terminal 5; departure terminal 5 17.05. Should I be concerned? Thanks B

You should have enough time if your first flight is on-time. Your connection should take fewer than 5 minutes. The only thing you have to be worried about is your flight from San Francisco being late due to weather in San Francisco.

  • Connection time
    Oct 29, 2014
I booked a American Airline flight from Vancouver to San Diego with connecting Amerian Airline flight in LA. The connection time is only 50 minutes. I won't have checked baggage. Do I need to go through security and check in again? Is 50 minutes too short? Thanks.

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Vancouver. All you have to do in LAX is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate, which should both be in the American Eagle remote terminal.

Thanks. So do you think 50 minutes long enough?

    Yes, it should be.

  • Layover in LAX
    Oct 10, 2014
I am flying from cancun to vancouver with an overnight layover in LAX. (In LAX at 9:00pm, leave LAX at 9:55am). Should i get a hotel to stay the night? I know Delta airlines will be keeping my baggage so i would only have carryon stuff with me. Do we go through customs when we land in LAX?

Yes, you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, and go through US Customs upon arrival at LAX. I doubt Delta will let you re-check your bags for an overnight 13 hour layover. You should definitely get a hotel. 13 Hours is a long time to spend on the airport floor.

  • Enough layover time and will the plane transfer my luggage
    Sep 25, 2014
I have a flight from LAS via Virgin America at 9:45 to 10:55 to LAX Terminal 3 and my layover is only 1 hr. and 20 mins. to Tom Bradley terminal at 12:20pm. Do I have enough time? Will Virgin America transfer my luggages to Asiana Airlines? Do I need to check in again with my luggage or just my carry-on? And its my first time in LAX, how can I get from Terminal 3 to TB Terminal?

By the way i purchased my ticket in the same reservation number Domestic Virgin America and ASiana airlines for International flight. Do i need to claim my luggage at MAX Terminal 3 to TBIT and check in again? 1 hr & 20mins will be enough time layover?

If you purchased your tickets together your bags will automatically be transferred and Virgin America should even be able to issue your Asiana boarding pass (although they may not be able to). Getting from T3 to the TBIT is very easy. You just have to exit Terminal 3, walk to the right (with the flow of traffic) and the next building you come to is the TBIT. It takes about 3 minutes.

  • Layover sufficient time?
    Sep 15, 2014
I'm planning a trip in January from Brisbane on Qantas/Tom Bradley Intl terminal arriving 6.30am and leaving Aeromexico (terminal 2 I think) at 9:55am giving a layover of 3hr25min. Is this sufficient time to collect baggage, go through US customs and immigration, transfer terminals and recheckin in? Thanks

Yes, that should be enough time. You'll probably be out of Customs by 7:30 at the latest, It's about a 10 minute walk to T2, so you'll be there more than 2 hours before your flight.

Thank you for your quick response

  • Lax between flights
    Sep 15, 2014
We arrive at LAX terminal B at 6.30am and have a connecting flight to Vancouver which departs terminal M at 2.35pm. Will our bags be checked straight through or do we have to collect them and re-check? If we have to re-check will we need to take them to Terminal B to do this or is there a transfer drop point? We are hoping to take a taxi to Venice Beach or Hollywood to have a quick look around between flights.

LAX does not have a Terminal M. What airlines are you flying and where are you coming from on your first flight?

We are arriving on Virgin flight from Brisbane, Australia (code share with Delta, which is our connecting airline)

OK. You will arrive in the Tom Bradley International Terminal, go through US Immigration, claim your baggage, go through US Customs, then follow the sign for connecting passengers to re-check your bags with Delta. Then you will exit the Terminal and walk to the right to Terminal 5 where your Delta flight to YVR will depart.

If you want to look around you can do so - it's about a 20 minute taxi ride to Venice Beach. Be back to LAX by 1 PM. Hollywood is much further away (over an hour in traffic).

  • transit in LA, luggage
    Sep 14, 2014
HI, urgent - check in luggage process in LAX Sydney to Cleveland: Sydney (SYD) to Los Angeles (LAX) QF Qantas Airways Flight: 107 Then same day transit Los Angeles (LAX)to Cleveland (CLE) UA United Flight: 1665 Can I make the luggage check-in at Sydney airport and go directly to Cleveland? ( without need to take check-in luggage out at LA airport) If not, what will be the procedure? and how far between Qantas and United? It is a 16 yr boy travelling alone for the first time so need to get the information clear before hand,Thanks for your assistance, appreciated.

If you purchased your tickets together the bags can be tagged through to Cleveland. However, the bags still must be claimed in order to go through US Customs. If they were tagged through to Cleveland, they can then be immediately re-checked in the International Terminal re-check desk. If they are only tagged to LAX, the passenger must take the bags with him to Terminal 7 to check with United and pay a checked bag fee. It is approximately a 15 minute walk between the International Terminal and T7.

  • LAX 15 hours layover at night from 7:30 pm to 10:30 am
    Apr 21, 2014
Hello! I have a 15 hr layover at LAX on May 8th 2014. I was wondering if it would be safe and convenient to step out of the airport, for some sight seeing? Immigration and Borders check at the airport would take 90 mins and I'd like to be back 2 hours before the flight next morning. So essentially I have time from 9pm to 8:30am for sight seeing. An option is to take the FlyAway bus service to Union station and head to Hollywood Boulevard. Are there any other places worth visiting at night? Would it make sense to start early in the morning and go visit Venice or Manhattan beacj?

Hollywood will be worth seeing at that time of night. Venice Beach and Santa Monica will be pretty empty that early in the morning, so you won't really get the flavor, but it's worth seeing if you've never seen it. Where are you planning on staying?

  • 1 hour connection in LAX
    Dec 21, 2013
Hi, we are flying from YVR to ZIH (in Mexico) on Alaska Airlines with a 1 hour connection in LAX. Is that enough time?

At YVR go through US customs clearance; on arrival at LAX at Terminal 6 simply walk to your connecting gate. T6 has gates 70A -71B, 72 & 73 & 74A -77B.

Yes, that should be enough time. All Alaska gates are connected beyond security at LAX and you will pre-clear US immigration in Vancouver.
