  • United Express (8) to US Airways Express (4) in 1 hr?
    Sep 17, 2014

We are arriving at LAX on United Express to terminal 8 (i think) at 1:05pm and need to be on US Airways Express out of terminal 4 (I think) at 2:05. Is 1 hr enough time if we only have carry-ons?

It's maybe possible but it's really risky - you'll have to wait for your gate-checked bags, then it's about a 15 minute walk to T4 then you have to go through security, then you have to take the shuttle to the remote "Eagle" terminal.

  • Delta Flight from SFO through LAX to Puerto Vallart

Question: We are travelling Delta from SFO with a layover in LAX then onto Puerta Vallarta, Mexico. Where do we go through customs? Do we need to grab our luggage in LAX, or does it go all the way through to Mexico for us?

On your way to Mexico you will go through Mexican Immigration and Customs when you get to Mexico. You do not go through US Customs when leaving the US. You will not have to do anything with your baggage in LAX. On your way back, you will clear US Immigration and Customs in LAX. That is when you will have to claim your luggage to go through Customs then re-check it.

  • Delta to International

We are arriving on a Delta commuter flight at 12:05 PM and have a 1:30 PM Tahiti Nui flight at the International Terminal. 1. Is that enough time? 2. Do we have to exit terminal 5 and go through security again or is there a walkway to the international terminal? It is either 1 1/2 hours or we have to get there like at 6 in the morning and sit until 1:30. Is 1 1/2 hours enough time? Thanks

Your Tahiti Nui flight will depart from the Tom Bradley International Terminal, NOT Terminal 1. You will have to go through security in The International Terminal AND get your Tahiti Nui boarding pass as Delta will not be able to issue it. If you are buying separate tickets you will have to go with the earlier flight - 85 minutes is not enough time to claim bags from Delta, take them to the TBIT, check them with Air Tahiti Nui, then get through security and to your gate.

Hi, we're looking at arriving at LAX at 11.45 am mid Dec on Air NZ. We're US citizens but considering a JetBlue flight to JFK at 2.00pm.Tickets will be bought separately so will need to recheck baggage. Looks like you can do an online checkin with Jet Blue but still need to drop off baggage somewhere at JetBlue. Is this time-frame do-able at that time of day/year? Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer!

That should be doable. That's about the minimum amount of connection I'd recommend for that kind of a connection where you have to transfer bags yourself.

Thanks very much for the speedy reply! Just one more question, Air NZ currently comes into Terminal 2, but I read somewhere they are supposed to move to Tom Bradley this year. Jet Blue is in Terminal 3, so will it make much difference to how long it takes to walk if they move before we travel?

Shouldn't make a difference, the walk from the TBIT to T3 is about the same as the walk from T2 to T3.

  • Sydney to LAX to Atlanta

My daughter is arriving on a Delta flight, terminal five gate 57. She has 90 minutes to catch her flight to Atlanta. Looking at historical data on Flight Aware, it looks like she could be on the same physical aircraft, boarding at the same gate. To go thru immigration and customs, will she essentially have to leave Terminal 5 and re-enter thru TSA? Or is there a shortcut they can use to stay near the gate? Thanks for any reply.

Passengers have to go through US Immigration and Customs at the first point they enter the US - so yes, she will have to exit the aircraft, go through US Immigration, claim her bags, go through US Customs, re-check her bags with Delta, then go to the departure level and through security.

Also, Delta flight 16 does have a change of Aircraft - it is a 777-200LR from Sydney to LAX and a 767-300 from LAX to Atlanta.

Sorry disregard that last post, the 777-200LR does continue to Atlanta as Delta flight 80. However, my first post is still true.

Thanks for the info! I'll let her know.

  • 2 hours enough from TBIT to Terminal 4 for AA?
    Sep 11, 2014

Flying from Abu Dhabi by Etihad EY 0171 and have a connecting domestic flight from terminal 4. having 2 hours between the connecting flights, is that sufficient to clear customs and walk to terminal 4?

Yes, that should be enough time if you purchased your tickets together.

  • Arriving in Terminal 2 meeting someone flying Delta into terminal b?

Hi There. We are flying into LAX on Aircanada and meeting a family member flying in on Delta from Amsterdam. Where will they land and what will be the easiest way to get to them? We get in around an hour before they land.

Delta does not fly from Amsterdam to LAX so that flight will be operated by KLM and arrive in the International Terminal. The easiest way to meet them would be to walk to the International Terminal. On the lower level there is a large area to meet people exiting customs.

  • Connecting flights with separate airlines, and bought separately.

I have a morning flight with Southwest from San Jose CA to LAX and a flight from LAX to Mexico with Alaska, but I only have 1 hour and fifty minutes layover. I believe I will be arriving at terminal 1 and departing from terminal 6 not sure how far apart these two are. any suggestions.

The fastest way between T1 and T6 is to walk straight across the parking garages. You can check-in for your Alaska flight online before you leave San Jose. However, you should still have enough time if your first flight is on-time even if you have checked baggage to transfer.

  • B to delta connection

Hi there, I am arriving in terminal B on fiji airways at 11:25am (28th Dec) and looking to get a delta flight from LAX - DCA at 1:05pm - travelling on AUS passport and separate tickets so will need to clear customs and recheck bags - is 1.5hrs too risky? Am pretty well versed in rushing at airports but haven't been to LAX in a while.

Delta does not fly LAX-DCA. However their codeshare partner Alaska Airlines does, so that's probably the flight you're looking at. That flight would depart from Terminal 6. 1.5 hours is doable but awfully risky because you'll have to get yourself and your bags to T6 40 minutes before your flight. It takes 10-15 minutes to walk between the TBIT and T6. so that means you would have to be out of customs by 12:10. It's doable, but difficult and leaves little room for error. Maybe you should consider flying to IAD instead.

  • Terminal 3-->Bradley, different airlines and international flights

I am flying from Denver to Fiji with a layover at LAX (i booked this as one itinerary from Google Flights). I arrive at LAX in Terminal 3 (Frontier) and need to go to Bradley (Fiji Airways) for my connecting international flight. A couple questions: - i assume I need to go through security again... do I need to claim my bags at Terminal 3 and re-check them at Bradley International Terminal? - Is 2.5 hours enough time? Thanks!

Yes, you will have to claim your bags in T3 and take them to the Fiji Airways counter in the TBIT. The TBIT is right next to T3 so it's fastest to walk. 2.5 hours should be enough time.

Is there any shuttle services between Terminal 1 and 4? Also how do you get from Terminal 4 to the American Egale gates 44H?

There is a shuttle that runs outside security along the curbfront. It is very slow as it has to sit in traffic. It is often faster to walk. Once you clear security in T4, another shuttle bus will take you to the American Eagle gates.

do i have to go thru security get from 6 to 4?

Yes, you do. There is a tunnel between T5 and T6 that is open to the public, however, the tunnel between T4 and T5 is closed. It may be open in the future, but there's no announced date. You will have to exit the terminal and walk along the curbfront to T4, then go through security.

Also, technically you could take the shuttle from T6 to the American Eagle terminal and then from the American Eagle terminal to T4. That would keep you inside security, but would probably be slower.

Hold on, there's a shuttle between American eagle and T6? I'm going to be arriving I think into american eagle and then I have to get to T6, can I skip taking the shuttle to T4 and walking to T6? Or does this shuttle only go one way back to AE from T6.

  • SFO to LAX to Brazil

Hi, My trip is from SFO to LAX and then to Brazil. I'm arriving on gate 46B (T4) and then I need to go to Gate 212. Questions: a. where is this gate 212? b. how long does it take to get from terminal 4, gate 46B, to gate 212? c. do I need to go through security again? I have only 40 minutes (hoping my first flight does not get delayed). Thanks.

I cannot find a gate 212. What airline are you flying on your second flight?

    It's AA, both flights. Thanks!

Then both flights will be in Terminal 4.

Thanks, ZAP. It was actually gate 45 to get a shuttle to a remote terminal to the gate 209 (change from 212). From gate 45 to 209 it took around 10 min to get there. Everything went ok. Thanks for your help.

Did you have to go throughout the security check again at LAX? I will have a similar situation, with a baby, and only have 1 hour.

No, I didn't go through security again. I arrived on gate 42, and gate 45 was just across from it.

Thank you, I feel much better right now. Do you know how often is the shuttle? Was the shuttle crowded? Will it be a trouble if I have a stroller, a backpack and a baby to take the shuttle?

Hi, I have a 10 pm arrival at LAX then I have to catch my flight to Brisbane, Australia which departs at 11:45. This is the first time travelling by myself and I'm scared and nervous. Do I grab my luggage from Terminal 4 (my arrival) and then do I have to go through TSA screenings then head to TBIT? If anyone can give me a walkthrough, I'd really appreciate it. And will I have enough time to make my flight?

If both of your tickets were purchased together (and I assume your flying into LAX on American) your bags will be tagged through to Brisbane in your origin. Assuming your origin is within the US, you won't have to do anything with your bags in LAX. You will arrive in T4, exit the terminal, walk to the left as you exit (against the flow of traffic), the next building you come to will be the TBIT. Then you will go through security and to your departure gate. You should be able to get your Qantas boarding pass from American at your origin airport, but if you can't you will have to get it first from the Qantas counter.

If both your tickets were bought at the same time and your first flight is with American you won't have to do anything with your baggage in LAX. All you have to do is exit T4, walk the short walk to the TBIT, and go through security and to your departure gate.
