  • Layover time for 2 separate tickets

We are flying Brisbane to LAX on Virgin Australia landing at 6.55am Thursday Sept TBIT. We are considering flying Delta T5 at 9.55am on to YVR. If we are only taking carry on luggage, is 3 hours an appropriate layover time? Is 6.55am a busy arrivals time for Tbit?

  • Enough time in a 3 hour layover?

Hi guys my flight from Melbourne to Los Angeles arrives at 630am and then I need to catch a la to Mexico flight at 10am. I'm flying with Qantas and then American Airlines so it is in the same terminal but it's a seperate booking so I will need to collect bags, go through security(customs?) and then check in to my American Airlines flight. Seeing as it's an international flight and I still need to pay for my baggage and go through security etc will 3 and a bit hours be enough time? Any help or previous experience tips would be greatly appreciated thank you! Also I'm flying at the end of July I'm not sure if that makes it a busier time or not..

It is not in the same terminal. You will arrive in the International and depart from Terminal 4. 3 hours should be enough time.

I have a flight from LAX to INC (Korea) at on May 28th at 23.55. Will it be enough time if my flight from RNO to LAX should land at 21.09? (only 2 hours 45 mins) but as I understand when I get to LAX from Reno I won't have to go through any security until Im in TBIT terminal so that shouldn't be that long? I have checked in bags though...

What airlines are you flying? Are all tickets on the same reservation or separate? I can't answer your question without that info.

RNO to LAX is AA and flight from LAX to Korea is Korean Air. They are two separate reservations.

That should be enough time. You will arrive in the American Eagle Remote Terminal, then take the shuttle to Terminal 4, claim your bags, then take your bags to the Korean Air counter in the International Terminal, check your bags, and go through security.

I am landing at 6.25 in the morning arriving from Tel Aviv and need to catch another flight to Phoenix AZ on a separate reservation. What the minimum time for a layover that would enable me to clear immigration and custom and pick up my luggage and change a terminal?

Assuming you are purchasing two separate reservations I'd want at least 3 hours between flights.

Arriving LAX 4/29/16, at 8:47 pm flight to SYD departs at 10:40 pm. Will I have enough time to make this reservation? CHS to LAX ticket is separate from LAX to SYD ticket. Second question ... Assuming I get precheck like normal, would I have enough time to exit and go for a smoke and go back thru security? Another question, one agent from Delta on the phone said they can merge the two reservations when I check in in Charleston, so if that's possible my bags will also be checked all the way to SYD, or do I have to get them in LAX and put back onto another line?

If your bags are checked though to SYD in CHS then you don't have to claim them in LAX. What airline are you flying to Sydney?

My son is coming back from Hong Kong on 7/7/16 at 10:10 PM and has to catch another flight 7/8/16 at 12:10 AM on a separate reservation to Miami. Does he have enough time to clear customs and make the flight?

If both tickets are on the same reservation, yes, that should be enough time.

Hi lovely helpful commenters! If I arrive into LAX from Mexico City on Aeromexico at 6:47pm on a Wednesday, will I have enough time to make a 10:30pm flight to Auckland on Air New Zealand? Allowing for customs/small delay etc.

Yes, that should be enough time. Note that you will arrive in Terminal 2 and depart from the International Terminal.

  • Connecting from T4 to T2 in LAX

I will fly to Lax landed on T4, and then connect on T2, do I have to go through security check again? What is the fastest walk path?

What airlines are you flying? If those terminals are correct, yes, you will have to go through security again in T2.

I am flying back to LAX from Hong Kong on 5/26 at 2:50 PM on Thurs 5/26/16. Then flying back to Dallas on Southwest at 6:20 PM through a different reservation. Is that enough time to go through Custom, Recheck my bags and Security check Point?

Yes, that should be plenty of time. You will have to take your bags with you to T1 to check with Southwest.

  • Domestic then to FIJI

My daughter will land at LAX from Wash DC to transfer to FIJI air.Does she get her luggage and go back through security OR does she not get luggage until FIJI? I need to know because we have a choice of a 3 hour layover or 10 hour layover and luggage is V important. If she WANTS to get her luggage she could just fly American and not mention FIJI and get 10 hour layover and retrieve luggage. BUT then she can't check in 9 hours early at LAX correct? Thank you!

Right, the Fiji Airways desk doesn't open until about 3 hours before the flight.

So will she get her luggage and go to the international terminal or just go to new terminal and not see luggage?

It depends if her bags are checked through. AA will only check bags through to Fiji Airways if all tickets are on the same reservation.

I'm arriving from Europe with Norwegian at 4pm on June 18th, the connecting flight to Seattle with Alaska Airlines leaves at 6:45pm. Is there enough time to go through immigration and transfer? I also need to check my bag for the connecting flight.

That's barely enough time if everything goes smoothly.

  • Connecting from Panama to Tokyo

Hi, I will arrive on Copa at 23:35 and departing on ANA at 01:20. Do I have enough time? I'm traveling on tourist visa.

    It's possible.

I do have an option to arrive on an earlier flight that gets in at 16:48, but it becomes over an 8hr layover instead of the 1:40 layover, but I don't know if the 1:40 layover is just too risky or if it's actually enough due to the late hours and that both flights are probably in the same terminal. I think I'll have to pass immigration and customs...

  • Coming in on Hawaiian, out on Virgin America

We're arriving into LAX at 4.15pm on non US passports from Honolulu and want to transit with Virgin America that night to SFO. Would a 7.55pm flight be sensible - or even later?

Your passports don't matter for flights within the United States. That should be plenty of time.

  • From MEX AS1548 to SEA AS463

Travelling from Mexico City to Seattle via LAX. My flight from MEX to LAX is Alaska Airlines 1548 Operated by AMERICAN AIRLINES (arrives T4?) and my connecting flight is Alaska Airlines 463 (T6?) from LAX to SEA with a 2 h 28 m of layover. Those flights are booked through Alaska. Do I have to pick up my baggage in LAX, go through the Customs and immigration, and re-check in the baggage? If so, are those facilities in T4 or T6? Thank you.

Yes, you have to do those things. If you arrive in T4 you will do that in T4. If you arrive in T6 you will do that in T6. AA can use gates in either.

    Thank you so much!

  • Terminal 1 to 3 Logistics?

I'm arriving from Sacramento on Southwest in Terminal 1 at 10:15pm and need to get to Virgin America in Terminal 3 for a 11:45pm departure on separate bookings. If I print VA boarding pass out prior and have no bag check-ins, can I bypass security somehow (tunnel, direct shuttle, etc.) or do I need to leave Terminal 1 and check into VA at 3 as if I were a new flyer, i.e. wait in line for tickets, security, etc., which would mean that connection is impossible?

You have to leave Terminal 1, walk to Terminal 3 and go through security. If you check in online and have no checked bags then there's no reason to have to go to the ticket counter. It is possible.

Thx. So how long do you think it'll take to disembark, leave Terminal 1 then walk/shuttle to Terminal 3 security? How busy is LAX that late on a Friday?

disembarking and walking to T3 will take maybe 15 minutes. Security will probably take 30 minutes or less - there are other redeye flights from T3 that depart that late but security shouldn't be too bad.
