we are arriving LAX from KOA at 5:17am on United. Connecting flight to EWR on United- departs LAX at 6:00am. This is 43 min layover. Can we make this? any problems? there are 2 adults, 3 teenagers-luggage is checked

As long as the first flight is on-time that should be enough time. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate and all United gates at LAX are connected inside security.

  • Time Needed between TBIT and Terminal 7 on Separate Reservation

How much time is needed to get from LAX international terminal to Terminal 6 0r 7 (United) on separate reservation with 1 bag that will need to go through customs and then be checked onto a domestic flight. I'm considering booking separate reservations for domestic leg round trip (Denver/LAX) and then book Singapore Airlines international leg round trip (LAX/NRT) as it will represent $2,000 savings vs. booking a connecting flight round trip Denver/Tokyo on same flights (believe it or not). Return is the concern as customs/immigration is involved. Arrive on Singapore Airlines in TBIT at 11:50AM and then United flight to Denver at 3:50pm on a Sunday . Is this enough time? Also, Do I leave the airport terminal with bag after customs, get to Terminal 6/7 and then check in "new" as domestic departure on the domestic reservation? I'm not as concerned about outbound Denver/LAX leg as arrival to LAX would be 9:30AM United Airlines on a Friday with Singapore Air flight at 2:30pm. Assume here I simply pick up bag at United domestic baggage claim and make my way to TBIT Singapore Air and check in under the LAX/NRT ticket (with 5 hours to do this)? Thanks for any insight

I would want 3 hours both ways, but it's more important on your way back from Tokyo than on your way there. Yes, upon arrival in LAX from Singapore you will arrive in the International Terminal, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then follow signs for passengers ending their trip at LAX, then exit the international terminal, walk to T7 and re-check your bags at the check-in counter with United.

I have 1.5 hours to get from terminal 2 to terminal 5? Can I walk and will I make it?

It's possible to make it between those terminals in that time, but it will difficult if you have baggage to transfer. Where are you coming from and going to and what airlines are you flying?

Coming from Westjet and going to Delta. Will only have carry on.

Concerned about enough connection time. Arrival in PHL at 9:05 pm, terminal 6. Depart for MEL 10:50 pm, TBIT. I only have a carry-on and can walk/run. Do I need to go through security again? Will I make it? Unfortunately, I was naive and booked under separate tickets when the AA website was throwing errors. Thanks in advance.

Yes, you will have to go through security in the International Terminal and may have to stop at the Qantas check-in counter to get your boarding pass (you may be able to check-in online if you have traveled internationally on Qantas before). It is possible, but depends on everything going smoothly.

Flight arriving to LAX @ 8pm with Virgin America. then depart for Sydney form the same terminal at 10.2pm.. s thisrealistic considering international checkin/ baggage etc. THere is a flight i could take that would get me to LAX at 3.. should I just take that?

Virgin Australia flights actually depart from the International Terminal even though their check-in counter is in Terminal 3. Are you purchasing your tickets on the same reservation or separate? If the same reservation then the flight that arrives at 8 PM should be fine. Your bags will be checked through to Sydney and all you will have to do in LAX is walk to the International Terminal and go through security.

No, actually I will have to collect a bag from storage, then check it in.

    Where is it in storage?

  • SW connecting to International Terminal

How much time is needed to connect from a southwest flight from Phoenix to another flight in the International Terminal ? There is a flight that lands at 10:30pm, and the Air New Zealand flight leaves at about 12pm. Is that enough time?

Do you mean 12 midnight? (that's 12 AM). No, that wouldn't be enough time. If you want to be on a midnight flight you need to arrive at LAX by 9:30 at the latest. You will have to transfer your bags yourself from T1 to the International Terminal.

Thanks. Yes, sorry I do mean 12 am, but I won't be checking any bags - in this case, would an hour and a half be enough time at the hour in the night? (arriving Southwest Terminal 10:30pm, leaving international terminal 12am)

Yes, but it would be barely enough time and depend on your Southwest flight being on-time.

Hi, I will arrive on from MUC on LH at 3:15 PM and have a connection to SAN with UA at 5:05. Will I make it? Are there express lanes for customs/immigration?

There is no express lane for connecting passengers. You have enough time if your flight from MUC arrives on-time. I suggest running/speed walking to T7 rather than taking the shuttle bus. At that time of day the shuttle bus will just be stuck in traffic. You will be able to re-check your bags at the re-check desk in the International Terminal right after clearing customs.

Arriving at 3:49pm on Aeromexico (Terminal 2) and scheduled to depart out of Terminal 4 on American at 5:35pm. How close will I be cutting this knowing that we have to navigate Immigration/Customs, re-checking baggage, and going back thru security?

This is very very difficult, bordering on impossible. It would be possible without checked bags if you ran to T4 after clearing customs and had already checked in online for your AA flight.

Thanks, I figured it would be a stretch. I plan on getting the TSA pre screen approval. Would this save me much time and make it possible to connect?

    It helps a little bit.

I have no idea what terminal in LAX my Virgin/Delta flight from Brisbane lands, or which one I need for my Seattle flight to Calgary (same ticket) Believe I leave my bags somewhere, do I check them in or are they tagged right through in Brisbane. I leave on 9 August, when will I know the terminals

You will arrive in the International Terminal, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, re-check them at the re-check desk, then if you are flying Delta to Seattle, you will go to Terminal 5 and through security and to your departure gate.

I arrive at LAX at 8:15 am on American Airlines Aug 17 Monday from Las Vegas. I have to get to United flying to cancan at 9:45. Will I make it?

With checked bags, you will have to hope your first flight is on-time and then RUN to Terminal 7 to make it to re-check your bags on-time. Without checked bags this should be doable if your first flight is on-time.

  • Transfer TIME from Tom Bradley (TBIT) to terminal 1
    Jul 25, 2015

Arriving LAX (Tom Bradley International Terminal) on a SATURDAY night at 7:30pm with 2 LARGE checked bags, then connecting to different airline (separate ticket, not a through ticket) for domestic flight that is 100% on-time, departing from LAX Terminal 1, Gate 17B at 9:15pm. Can this be done? Will having Global Entry help me expedite through the customs process?

With global entry, if you are able to run with the bags, maybe, barely. I personally wouldn't try it.

It's actually today and the connecting SWA flight at T1 is currently running an hour late, so he has from 8:00 till 10:15 to make the connection. I think he should take the shuttle. What do you think? (It's not me, it's my husband flying.)

The shuttle sucks but it sucks less late at night. If it weren't for the 2 bags I'd definitely recommend walking/running instead of the shuttle. He has a chance.

  • Which airline best for Terminal B connection?

We are flying New York to LAX, with a 2.20 connection time with Air NZ to Auckland from Terminal B. We can either fly Virgin or United from NY to LAX. Which airline would provide easiest connection to our Air NZ flight? Is 2.20 enough time with a ticketed connection? Thanks - this is a very helpful forum!

Virgin's terminal is closer to Air New Zealand's. However, United is a Star Alliance partner of Air New Zealand and will check your bags through to them if both tickets are purchased on the same reservation and may be willing to do so even if they're not. 2 hrs 20 minutes is pushing it if you have to transfer bags yourself.

Thanks for your help. The NY-LAX-AUCK will be on the same reservation with either Virgin or United. We will not have check-in luggage. So given that, a 2.20 connection time should be ok? Thanks.

    Yes, that should be OK.

Hi, We have a domestic flight from Vegas to LA terminal 5 arriving at 2pm and then a terminal 7 flight to London departing at 6pm, this is 2 seperate tickets and we will have no checked baggage. I have tried googling but I can't find anything that clearly confirms that we won't have to leave the terminal and go through security again as long as we have pre-printed our united tickets and have no checked baggage even though they are separate tickets? I believe terminal 5 and 7 are connected post-security so we can skip security and so 4hrs layover should be plenty of time? Is that correct? Thank you for any answers you can provide

Yes, you can take a tunnel from T5 to T6, then walk to the base of T6 along a connector to T7. However, you have plenty of time, so that if you wanted to exit security and get some fresh air, or aren't able to check in for your United flight online, you have plenty of time to do so.

  • Melbourne - LAX - San Francisco

My United Airlines flight from Melbourne Australia arrives at LAX 6.45am with a 2hr 15min layover before my next flight to San Francisco (on United). I am concerned that this will not be enough time to get through customs and check in again for the next flight. I've never been to LAX and would like some guidance in making the transition as smooth as possible. Thanks.

That should be enough time. United's MEL-LAX flights usually arrive in the International Terminal. You will arrive, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then follow the signs for connecting passengers and re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then walk or take the lower level shuttle bus to Terminal 7 and go through security. You should have enough time.

  • Security, Connections: Which is best?

I am traveling from Budapest, Hungary arriving at 4:30 pm Sunday evening on United, Terminal 7/8. I need to purchase a flight to Phoenix. Oddly United does not have a flight after 4:40 pm so I will have to change terminals which means clearing and re-entering security at another terminal. These flights leave at 7 pm in order of the best price Southwest, Delta, American. Which airlines will I have the least hassle with security, shuttle to the terminal etc.

Delta has the closest Terminal to United (Terminal 5) and usually doesn't have very bad security lines.
