T4 and T5 are not connected beyond security. You'll have to hurry, but I think you'll still have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

Yes, you will have to re-check the baggage after you clear customs. It's a simple re-check counter, you don't have to take it upstairs. Yeah, you could take a walk outside - maybe even take a hotel's shuttle van to that hotel's bar. Or you could walk over to the encounter restaurant in LAX's iconic "theme building" - http://www.encounterlax.com/

Great thanks for your quick reply. Once we have re-checked our bags in again though are we OK to leave the building? I take it we won't have gone through security at that point? Sorry, not been to LAX before so not sure how it all works there.

Right, you will be in the non-sterile area when you re-check your bags, so you can do whatever you want as long as you get back to T6 about an hour before your flight to Maui.

On arrival at LAX you need to go through passport check, retrieve checked bags, go through customs clearance and - if transferring to another flight - re-check-in bag where indicated. As you have plenty of time, I would suggest you go to the Bradley Terminal (TBIT, or TB) with an abundance of amenities & services, and which is the largest of the 8 terminals arranged in a U shape (TBIT in center, T4, T5 & T6 to the right of the U). After baggage recheck, you can take the escalator at T6, ground level, down to the tunnel connecting T6,5&4. At T4, take escalator up, exit and go to your left around the bend to TBIT - should not take more than 10 mins. Also, the center of the U shape has parking garages and in the midst of them is the 'Theme Building' with the Encounter Restaurant. On your way back from TBIT you can also use the LAX bus Route A on lower arrival level island in front of each terminal, under sign 'LAX shuttle airline connection', which runs every 12-15 mins. Starting from TBIT, the next stops are at Terminals T4 –T8. Back at T6 you need to go through security check before proceeding to your gate.

That will be quite difficult in the time you have. You can take the shuttle around the baggage claim level or attempt to walk across the center of the airport. You'll then have to go through security again in T2.

Your next stops will be T8, around the bend to T1 & T2 - 3 stops or about 8 mins. At T2, go up to the departure level, go through security check and proceed to your gate area. T2 has gates 21-28.

That should be enough time - you would have to ask BA if they can check your bags through - perhaps you could call them to ask. Terminal 4 is right next to the TBIT so you won't have far to walk.

You have plenty of time. NOTE: If your first airline does not transfer bags to your second airline, you will need to take your bags, after customs clearance, to Terminal 6, checking them in with Copa. Terminals 5 & 6 are connected by tunnel - at the baggage claim level, take the escalator down to the tunnel and at T6 go up the escalator, proceed to the departures level and go through security check before proceeding to your connecting gate.

I also should note I do not have any check-in luggage, only carry ons.

That will be a really tough connection. You will have to clear immigration, then walk quite a long way to Terminal 6, then go through security again during the peak travel season.

You won't have to exit security, so assuming your first flight is on time it is doable. However, there's little margin for error. I hope you are on an early flight so if you miss your connection you can be rebooked on a later flight (UA has several LAX-HNL).

Yes, you will have to exit the terminal and go back through security. If your first airline will not transfer your bag to your second airline I don't think you'll have enough time. Even as it is, it is a very tight connection.

On Arrival at LAX, you go through passport control, pick up your bags, go through customs clearance and then re-check-in your bags (35-50 mins); thereafter, proceed via escalator down to the tunnel connecting T6 with T7; take escalator a T7 back up and take elevator to departure level, there you need to go through security check before proceeding to your gate. Check with United as to their policy.

You only clear customs if you are an international arrival. If Delta will transfer your bags to Air China, all you need to do is exit T5 and take the LAX bus Route A on lower arrival level island in front of each terminal, under sign 'LAX shuttle airline connection', which runs every 12-15 mins. After T5, it stops at T6, T7, T8, around the bend to T1 & T2 - five stops or 12 mins. At T2 you need to go through security check before proceeding to your gate. If Delta does not transfer bags to Air China, you need to take your bags along and check them in at T2 with Air China. Your two hours should suffice in any case.
