  • Terminal 7 Baggage re-checking
    Nov 22, 2014
Hi, I'm flying with United into LAX from SYD at 06:30 and need to catch a connecting flight booked together to SFO at 08:20 (then on to Eugene) Both flights are landing/departing from terminal 7. Will one hour and 50 minutes be enough time to go through immigration and customs and re-check the bags at the transfer desk and then get back through security? What would be the minimum time you would recommend for this process? Cheers.

That should be enough time. However be aware that some united flights from Australia have been arriving in the international terminal. The process is the same, just a longer trip between terminals.

  • Terminal 7/8 to Terminal 1
    Nov 22, 2014
I am coming in to LAX from NY on a United Flt, land 5;55 PM, is it possible to make a 6:25 PM Southwest flt to Las Vegas?

No, that is not enough time!

  • Advice Required - cutting it too fine?

Arrive from YVR on United Express UA6217 (arriving at Terminal 8 at LAX at 9pm). I understand we will pre-clear US customs before leaving YVR. Need to get out of plane, wait/collect bags and get down to Tom Bradley for a 11:55pm QF108 departure. (i) what is the best way to get down to Tom Bradley from Terminal 8 at around 9:45pm? Note I have three kids in toe. (ii) how long will the transfer take? (iii) I am assuming I can make it to the Qantas desk at around 10:30pm... does that leave enough time to get through USA Customs and boarder control?

The best way is to walk. It is about a 15 minute walk. You should have plenty of time. You do not have to go.through us customs when leaving the u.s.

Thanks Zap. United tells me they wont check the bags through to Qantas, so I assume I collect at Terminal 8 then exit terminal and recheck in at Tom Bradley. So when leaving USA its just a quick security check?

  • Need advice for connection
    Nov 12, 2014
Hello, Due to a flight change that I've inadvertently accepted I only have 1 hour and 45 minutes to get from International terminal 7 to International terminal 3. My flight in lands at 10:50am and my flight out at 12:45pm. The flight out is from LAX to Phoenix, but the flight continues to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico after a stop over. My flight is this Saturday, is there anything I can do to help myself out? I've contacted US Airways (who my second flight is with) and they have said there is a $200 rebooking fee if I miss it, which isn't ideal. If I can pay extra to get in some kind of express line for customs etc. I'd be happy to do it. Thanks in advance!

I'm confused. If you're flying LAX-Phoenix on your first flight then why are you worried about connecting in LAX? Phoenix doesn't have a Terminal 7. Please state your entire itinerary and what airlines you are flying for each segment and I will be able to help you better. Also, US Airways no longer uses Terminal 3 at LAX.

Apologies about that. Melbourne to LA (united airlines landing int terminal 7), landing 10:50am LA to Phoenix (US Airways, booked seperately to previous flight, leaves at 12:45pm after a flight change) from int terminal 3. One more flight on the same US airways booking from Phoenix to Puerto Vallarta Mexico after that. I might just tack on another qs- i'm surprised that my US airways flight from LAX to Phoenix is leaving from int (i assume this means international?) terminal 3 given that it's domestic. Will i need to be at check in 45 minutes (domestic) or 90 (international) before departure? I can also check in for my US airways flight before i leave on my United flight, i assume i should do this? Thank you for your help!

United flights from Melbourne are arriving in the TBIT. US Airways no longer uses Terminal 3 - your US Airways flight will depart from Terminal 4. You can check in 45 minutes before departure. Yes, you should check in online for your US Airways flight before you leave Melbourne. You have enough time in LAX for your connection. T4 is directly next to the International Terminal. Since you have to take your bags to T4 to re-check yourself, follow the sign at the exit of customs for passengers ending their journey in Los Angeles, not the one for connecting passengers.

  • Quebec (YQB)-Melbourne (MEL) via EWR and LAX
    Nov 12, 2014
Flying from Quebec, Canada to Melbourne, Australia via EWR and LAX - same booking all the way through with UAL. Am wondering: - no pre-border clearance at YQB, so will I have to go through US Customs at EWR or LAX? - flight to LAX arrives T7 and flight for Australia departs same terminal, will I have to retrieve my bags for US customs then go through check-in again or do they have a bag-drop there after customs? Layover is 2:10 at EWR and 3:50 at LAX. Return trip is through same airports but UA99 ex-MEL arrives TBIT and my connection to EWR flies out from T7 2h10 later (figure it should be enough to retrieve bags, do customs, then do security again at T7). Appreciate any info on this.

On your way to MEL, in EWR you will arrive in Terminal C, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then go through security and to your departure gate. In LAX all you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. On the return trip you will go through the US Customs and immigration process in LAX. All your connection times should be sufficient.

Thanks very much for that info, Zap. It's much appreciated.

  • Seattle - LAX - Brisbane
    Nov 4, 2014
Hi, arriving LAX terminal 5 on a Delta Flight from Seattle at 8:35pm. Need to collect luggage and then transfer toTom Bradley International to check in for Qantas Flight to Brisbane departing at 11:50pm. Can you please advise if this is enough time and quickest way to transfer (shuttle / walk?). Any advice appreciated.

The fastest way is to walk. You should have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

  • United from Mexico City to Santa Maria, CA. with connection in LAX.
    Nov 4, 2014
I would like to know if there is enough time for me to go through immigration, customs and re-check bags if I fly in at 11:50am from Mexico City and fly out at 12:45pm to Santa Maria, CA.

No, 55 minutes is totally inadequate for an International to Domestic connection. Contact your travel agent or United for rebooking.

I haven't booked my flight yet. I wanted to double check first. It's good thing I did. I'll book a later Domestic connection. Thank you!

  • Transferring between Terminal 1 and TBIT
    Nov 4, 2014
Hi, We arrive on Southwest at Terminal 1 at 9am and will be connecting to an Emirates flight from TBIT at 3:50pm that afternoon. It looks like it's a short 10-15min walk between terminals. Wondering what the best way to do it would be with 3 small children and 6 or 7 suitcases? Are porters (with the bigger carts) willing to help walk over your luggage between terminals? Or is our best bet loading the 7 pieces of luggage on and off the shuttle bus?

You might be able to find a porter to help you, but your best bet is probably trying to load them onto the shuttle bus. You obviously have plenty of time.

You have plenty of time to connect between the two terminals. Unfortunately, LAX doesn't have porter services. You may purchase a luggage cart for $5USD if your prefer to walk there. Or you can wait under the blue sign and catch the "A" shuttle bus. It stops at every terminal on the Arrivals (lower level). Here's more info: Once you arrive at Tom Bradley, take the elevator up to ticketing (Upper) level. Their check in counter location may switch sometimes, so look at the digital signs located at the check in counters. Enjoy your trip! Best, LAX Airport

  • Oz flight QANTAS to Virgin America Connection Time
    Nov 2, 2014
Hi, I am arriving on a QANTAS flight into Tom Bradley at 6.30am and I was hoping to book a flight with Virgin America to Cancun which would be leaving from terminal 3 at 10.45am, would there be enough time to make it through customs etc. and make the flight?

Oh I forgot to mention that I would be arriving on 30th December, thinking that it might be busy cause of the Christmas/NY period.

Yes, that should be enough time. You will be out of customs by 7:15 or so, 7:30 at the latest. It's about a 5 minute walk to T3, so you'll be at T3 by 7:35 at the latest, which is still over 3 hours before your flight.

  • Alaska Air from Fairbanks to LAX and checkin on Cathay Pacific to HK
    Oct 31, 2014
I am booked on a flight from Fairbanks to Anchorage to LAX on 22 May 2015 and arriving at LAX on 23 May 2015 at 0650 hours, We have then to check our baggage in with Cathay Pacific for Hong Kong leaving at 0940 hours. Will there be enough time to collect baggage with Alaska Airlines and then travel to the Cathay Pacific Terminal at LAX to check in. Do we have enough time as we have just under 3 hours for al this to happen? Please help. Thank you

Yes, that will be PLENTY of time. You will have your bags by 7:20. Then it's maybe a 10 minute walk to the International Terminal where the Cathay check-in desks are.

Hi thanks for your response. Will I need to go through security and immigration on arrival st LAX with Alaska Airlines from Fairbanks and Anchorage before collecting my baggage? Will I have to then go through another security area with Cathay Pacific?

  • International to domestic transfer
    Oct 31, 2014
Arriving into LAX from Melbourne on new United Dreamliner. Arriving Terminal 7 and departing Terminal 7 for Orlando, also on United. Connection time 2:20. I have not found any relevant post about the process in Terminal 7 for UA international arrivals and was wondering if I will have enough time?

Yes, you will have enough time. You will arrive in T7, go through US Immigration, go claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then go upstairs and through security. You should have plenty of time.

  • Meeting spot
    Oct 29, 2014
I'm flying into LAX for a wedding next weekend, looks like I'll come into Terminal 1. Other family members are arriving about 30 minutes before me, in Terminals 4 and 5. We all need to meet up somewhere to head to our hotel. The other family members are somewhat limited in their mobility. Even though they're getting in earlier it would be best if the Terminal 4 and 5 people could meet up somewhere close to them, and then I can go to them. Any suggestions? Thanks!

The lower level curbfront between Terminals 4 and 5 is probably the best place.

  • Melb-LAX-Jamaica
    Oct 29, 2014
I have a flight booked from Melbourne to Tom Bradley International Airport at LAX which arrives at 6.30am. There's a flight to Kingston, Jamaica at 8.40am from terminal 3 or 4 - would I be able to make it? The only other flights are at 11pm!

It's possible. I'm guessing you would be buying a separate ticket on American connecting in Miami? You will have to hurry with your bags to T4 and re-check them. You should have enough time, but it doesn't leave much time to spare.

Yeah separate tickets so would need to get baggage etc. So it's possible? That's great! Thanks so much for your help

Yeah, I would guess that you'd be out of customs by like 7:15. After you exit customs follow the signs for arriving passengers, not connecting passengers, then exit the International Terminal, then walk to your right (with the flow of traffic). The next building you come to will be AA's terminal, Terminal 4.

  • Transferring from Virgin America to Virgin Australia
    Nov 5, 2014
Do I have to leave the TSA secure area to check my bags when I arrive from IAD on Virgin America transferring to Virgin Australia to Sydney?

If you purchased your tickets together you won't have to do anything with your bags in LAX. However, you will still have to exit the secure area as you will arrive in Terminal 3 and depart from the International Terminal, which is located next door, but is not connected to T3.

Actually, you won't even have to leave the terminal, Virgin Australia departures fly out of T3, it's the arrivals that go through the Tom Bradley terminal . The airline should transfer your bag for you no problem, but I would just ask the desk agent to be safe.

Hi, Im traveling from HNL-LAX-LAS on AA. Our return is LAS-LAX on UA with connecting flt to HNL on AA. My concern is, is there a tunnel/shuttle that allows me to connect from UA's T7/8 to AA's T4 without having to exit the terminal/airport and re-entering all over again going through security? Your folks help will be greatly appreciated.

Upon arrival at T7 or T8, you can walk to T6 inside security and then take a shuttle to T4.
