  • Transferring from Virgin America to Air New Zealand

Hi, I'm looking to make two separate bookings, but want to make sure I have enough time first. My first flight is from LAS to LAX, arriving into Terminal 3 at 6.30pm. I then have to claim my bags and get to TBIT to check into an Air New Zealand flight departing at 9.30pm. Is three hours enough time to make this connection on two separate bookings? Also my bag has to be dropped at bag drop by 8.15pm. Do I have enough time to do that?

That should be enough time if the first flight is on-time. The International Terminal where you depart is right next to Terminal 3.

We are arriving in lax from Melbourne with only 1.5hrs to get to connecting flight to ny. What happens at customs, do we collect our luggage or does it go through to our connecting flight

You will have to go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk. What you do next depends on what airlines you are flying.

Landing on Delta Flight and I am continuing on to an International Flight (Delta also). Do I need to go thru security again? Can I walk to International Terminal?

Delta does not use Terminal 7 and no Delta flights depart from the International Terminal. If both flights are on Delta and the first flight is domestic all you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate in Terminal 5.

thanks.. I believe the incoming flight from SFO will come in to Terminal 5 (sorry, mistyped). We leave on Delta Air Lines 41 LAX to SYD. Maybe it is a co-share?

I just looked up today's flight DL41. It leaves from Terminal 5. I guess I was assuming it left from International. My previous Qantas flight was from there

Both flights will be in Terminal 5 - all you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

    thanks...

Do I have to go thru customs if my luggage is checked thru to Van. Can I walk from TBIT to T5. Is 1 hr.30 min. enough time? Delta airlines. Canadian passport.

You will have to go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, walk to T5 and go through security. That is barely enough time if everything goes smoothly.

  • Never Flown internationally before

Gday everyone, Never flown internationally before, looking for advice. Looking @ Flying United the whole way, MEL-LAX 4.5 Hour layover @ LAX) then LAX-MEX (8 hour layover) then MEX-Final point. My question was, what can I expect with Border Force/Immigration & Customs? Also, whats the best thing to do during a layover? Also I welcome any tips for long haul air travel!

You will arrive in the International Terminal, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go to Terminal 7 and go through security. You won't have a whole lot of time to kill during your connection in LAX. Various line waiting and walking will take up about 2 hours and your flight to MEX will start boarding about 45 minutes before it's slated to depart, so you really only have about an hour to kill.

That would be just enough time if everything goes smoothly.

i'm flying into LAX from LAS on Delta with a 1 hour layover, is that enough time to make my connecting flight?

Where are you flying to out of LAX and on what airline?

flying into LAX from LAS, and then on to Orlando on Delta.

Then yes, that is enough time. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

Will a 50min Layover work in LAX? I'm staying on the same airline and don't have to change terminals. It's not till August but the 2 flights I will be taking say for today that the gates are not to far away.

Yes, that should be enough time if the first flight is on-time.

Thanks That Should Work. I'll keep an eye on the flight to see if it's early or not between now and then.

  • 2 international flights T2 & T4

Hi, I am flying in from Toronto on a United flight landing @ T2 & will need to get to T4 for a flight to Sydney Australia 4 hours later. Will this be enough time & what is the best way or how long will it take to walk with my bags from T2 to T4. Any suggestions really appreciated. Thank you in advance

Your flight from Toronto is on Air Canada. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto. You have plenty of time.

Hi, I'm arriving from Portland at 12:00 pm at LAX. I have a two hour layover before I leave to Lima at 2:00 pm. Is this enough time to get my bags checked and go through customs or should I only take a carry on?

There is no US Customs when leaving the US. You just have to claim your bags in T6, take them to the TBIT, re-check them and go through security. You have just enough time. If you don't check a bag then you can go to the TBIT through walkways inside security and will have plenty of time.

Flying into LAX from MEM terminal 5. Connecting flight to Vancouver terminal 1. I know I have to go back through security but am I going to have to claim my bag and recheck it? I have almost a 4 hour layover. Is this enough time to get all of this done?

There are no flights from LAX to Vancouver that depart from Terminal 1. What airline are you flying to Vancouver?

West Jet. Maybe it's terminal 2.

Yes, Westjet uses Terminal 2. If everything is on the same reservation you don't have to do anything with your bags at LAX - just go to T2 and through security.

How does one get from TBIT after clearing customs from a United flight from Australia to T7 to catch a connecting United flight? How long does this take? Do I have to go through security again? I have 3 hours.

Yes, you will have to go through security again in T7. You should have enough time.

Give yourself ample time when going to or from an international flight. Two weeks ago the international flight out of Chicago took 2 hrs. to get through the lines. On May 31, when landing at LAX from an international flight, custom lines were a nightmare with little organization. It took over 2 hrs. to get through it. Even after finally getting your bags, it took over a half an hour to just get out, waiting in long lines snaking back and forth at baggage claim. So if you are doing any connections to or from a connecting flight involving international travel give yourself a lot of time to do the connection.
