  • Connecting Flight from International to Domestic

Hi, I have flight arrived from Taipei, Taiwan at 9:00 pm to LAX with EVA airline. And, my next connecting flight is from LAX to Tampa at 10:30 pm with Delta. I bought the 2 tickets separately. I have a 2 years old toddler and 2 baggages with me. May I know if I will have enough time (total 1 hour and half) to get my baggages, passed through the custom, and re-enter the custom for the domestic flight? Thank you!

No, I really don't think that's enough time.

Thank you, ZAP for your quick response. Can I know what is your recommended time allot between flight connections? 2 hours? or 3 hours? Thanks.

On two separate reservations I recommend at least 3 hours

  • Alaska to Qantas connection

We will be transferring from SEA - LAX - BNE from domestic Alaska Airlines to Qantas. I understand the new connection is open. How does it work with security and passport control? We will pass TSI at SEA and take the flight and arrive at terminal 6. From there, is there any other security? Where do they check our passports? We are Australians but the airlines usually check to be sure we have the right to enter Australia before issuing boarding passes.

There is no passport control when leaving the US. If you have both of your boarding passes just walk to your departure gate. The check-in agent in Seattle will look at your passport and you will show your passport to the Qantas gate agent when boarding your flight.

Thank you Zap, good to know! What about TSA, do we have to be checked again between arrival gate at T6 and departure at TBIT?

I just did this backwards. I went from Sidney on Qantas to LAX and onto seattle with Alaska and it has been a headache. I was told there's no way to avoid exiting the airport and going through security again. Also had to grab checked bags after customs, but only to walk them down a hallway and put them on another conveyer belt. I didnt have walk them to terminal 6 and recheck them. Let's see if they actually make it to my destination though...

TT, a walkway from T4 to the TBIT inside security just opened. There is also a walkway underground from T4 to T6, so you now can go from T6 to the TBIT inside security. Katr, the "backwards" experience when entering the US is quite different.

  • Customs/Immigration? Do I claim and re-check my back between flights
    Mar 2, 2016

Hello, Arriving LAX 4:15pm on Alaska Air from Cabo San Lucas SJD and departing on American at 7:25pm to PHX. Do I need to claim my bags in baggage claim, go thru immigration/customs and re-check bags with American prior to boarding he American flight?

Yes, you do. If your tickets were purchased on the same reservation and your bags are tagged to PHX then you can re-check your bags at the re-check desk after clearing US Customs.

Thank you for the reply and info. And sorry for the duplicate entry.

Arriving with United at terminal 7-8 at 10.30 pmand depart with Asiana at International at 12.30 am. Do I need to exit terminal and go through security again?

Technically you don't anymore, a connector just opened from Terminal 4 to the International Terminal. It's possible to walk from T7/8 to T6 through a walkway at the base of the terminal, then a tunnel from the middle of T6 to T5 and T4, then the new connector to the International Terminal. Note however, that the connector is under "soft open" conditions right now and may be closed at some times of day.

when did this TBIT tunnel open? can people at arrival use the tunnel to go to T4 ?

The T4-TBIT walkway just opened this week. Yes it directly connects T4 and the TBIT and then T4 is connected by tunnels to T5 and T6 and then T6, 7, and 8 are connected at their base.

Arriving at Term 1 and departing Term 7 an hour later. No checked bags and TSA Pre....any chance?

Yes, with pre-check you have a chance as long as you are already checked in for your United flight.

    Walk or shuttle?

Definitely walk - straight across the parking garages.

Hey there. Departing Nashville BNA at 9:30 am on Southwest, arriving LAX (terminal 1) at 12:10 pm. Singapore Airlines direct flight to Tokyo leaves from TB international terminal at 3:20 pm. I'm assuming we will have to claim our bags and then re-check them, I don't believe Southwest and Singapore have a baggage agreement. Will there be time for this, and what is the fastest way to claim and re-check? 3 hours 10 minutes. Never been through LAX before. Thanks!

Yes, you will have to claim your bags and re-check them in the International Terminal and yes you should have enough time. The fastest way between terminals is to walk, but there is also a bus on the lower level if you have trouble carrying your bags that far.

Thank you so much for the reply!

Arriving from Brisbane at 0600 and departing at 0800 on AA Terminal 4. This is what Qantas booked for our party of 3, is this 2 hour time frame enough to make connecting flight.

Yes, that should be enough time.

  • Should I avoid having any checked bags?

Flying into LAX from Vancouver Canada via Delta (terminal 5) Arrive 9:40 am. Depart to Puerta Vallarta at 10:25 am via Delta (should be same terminal. Should I avoid having any checked bags? How close a connection is this? Any advice?

This should be fine as long as your first flight is on-time. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Vancouver.

Thanks for your reply. I was wondering about Customs!

  • LAX-MEL Connection

Travelling today with United Airlines on the same reservation from Seattle to LA and then from LA to Melbourne. Flight from Seattle reaches LA at 9:25 pm and then the next flight from LA to Mel is at 10:40pm. Will need to transfer from Terminal 8 to Terminal 7. Question is will I have to collect my checked in bag and redo security again at LA airport before boarding the flight to MEL. Is 1 hour 15 min enough to get from Terminal 8 to Terminal 7 for catching an international flight? Thanks heaps.

No, you don't have to do anything with your bag or go through security. Just walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

  • Please advise.

Hi there, I'm arriving at 6:52pm on an Alaska Airlines flight Operated by American Airlines from DFW, and departing to Auckland on an Air New Zealand flight at 9pm. I'm just wondering the easiest way to get to the Air New Zealand terminal assuming my bags check through. Thanks!

The walkway from T4 where you arrive to the International Terminal where you departed just opened. Just follow signs to the International Terminal.

I arrive on Hawaiian at 11:55pm and have a connecting on American at !:00am. No bags, do I have sufficient time to make it, should I catch a shuttle? I have a 9 yr old and a 14 yr old w/me.

It will be very difficult. Yes, you could take the shuttle or run, but it's a long run. You will have to check in for your american flight online before you leave Hawaii.

  • Is 3 hours enough time to catch my connecting flight

My flight on Hawaiian Airlines lands at 5:15am at terminal 2 and I have an 8:10am connecting flight with Southwest Airlines at terminal 1. Am I going to have enough time to unboard, get my baggage from baggage claim, get to other terminal and through security lines in time to get on my connecting flight?

Yes, that should be plenty of time.

Leaving SLC to LAX on DL arriving at 9:35pm. Leaving LAX on CZ to Bangkok at 10:30? Is this impossible? No checked luggage

    Purchased CZ tickets separately.

I would say it's pretty close to impossible, even without checked bags. It might be possible if your flight is in April or later so you won't have to go through security again in the International Terminal (there will be a secure connector between T4 and the International Terminal and there is a tunnel between T5 where you will arrive and T4) and if you are able to check in online for your China Southern flight, then maybe you'd have a chance, but that's a lot of ifs.

Thank you! Kind of figured I was in trouble. Want to get to Thailand so just sucked it up and changed our flights. Thanks for your information!

From YYC- LAX- Narita Tokyo. Arriving in LAX 9:04 term 2 going to term 7 is 2 hours enough to claim baggage and going to terminal 7 for the departure 11:50 the same day?

Yes, that should be enough time. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Calgary. If both tickets are on the same reservation your bags will be transferred for you.
