  • TBIT to terminal 4,5 or 6

Hi, We are arriving at LAX in August at 1230pm on Air New Zealand. We are wanting to connect on to Orlando (direct). We have a couple options. Delta @ 2.55 or AA @ 3.35. We will have checked luggage. Based on previous trips through customs at LAX I'm fairly confident we'd make both times if everything goes smoothly. I'm probably going to go with AA for the extra time we'll have. If these are to tight for time it's a 9hr layover for the next direct flight. I just thought I'd gauge your opinion as it's been 5 years since our last time through LAX. Also, with the new connector from TBIT to terminal 4 will we have to go through security again in terminal 4 or 5 once we clear customs? Thanks for your help

Yes, you will still have to go through security again after you clear customs. I'd take the AA flight, you should be OK.

  • International Terminal to Southwest Term. 1

I land on ANA from Tokyo at 555pm; I have to catch a 710pm flight on Southwest out of terminal 1. I have Global Entry and will have carry on luggage only. Can I make it? Will I have to go through TSA security again at Terminal 1?

Yes, you will have to go through security again in Terminal 1. This is an extremely difficult connection, even with no checked bags and global entry. You will have to run to T1.

Arrive terminal 5 at 9:35 AM and need to depart at 11:00 AM terminal 2 Hawaiian, do we need to pick up bags to re-book? Do we have enough time? which option: walk or shuttle?

Yes, Delta and Hawaiian don't interline bags except on inter-island flights. You will have to claim your bags from Delta and take them to T2 and re-check. You should probably walk. You have just enough time if your first flight is on-time.

  • Mexico via Alaskan Air connect to Southwest to ORD

Is it reasonable to connect from Mexico via Alaskan Air arrival at 3:28 pm to Southwest Airlines for Chicago at 4:40 pm departure?

This is on a Saturday in June

No, that would be completely impossible. You'd arrive in Terminal 6, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then take your bags all the way to Terminal 1, check your bags with southwest and go through security, all in a little over an hour. Maybe if you didn't have checked bags and had already checked in online for your Southwest flight you'd have a chance. Also, Southwest flies to MDW, not ORD in Chicago.

Someone influential said we could but I went to the expert. By detecting my error of ORD and correcting it to MDW I suspect you are not a robot or even IBM's Watson! Great job thanks.

  • Miami to LAX to Sydney, AU

Hi, we arrive at 7:34pm at LAX with American Airlines at Terminal 4. Our next flight leaves at 10:30pm from LAX (Tom Bradley Terminal) with Qantas to Sydney Australia. The latest we can check-in for the Qantas flight is 2 hours prior to departure (8:30pm). Is 55mins acceptable for timing to get off the plane, collect luggage and get to the Intl terminal to check-in? Thanks!

Did you purchase two separate reservations? If both tickets are on the same reservation then your bags will be checked through and you will be checked in for both flights in Miami. If you did purchase two separate reservations, you should still have enough time.

Thanks!! The tickets are two separate reservations.

  • Southwest arrives at 9:50am to Hawaiian 11:15am with luggage

Will I have enough time to get from LAX Southwest air arrival at 9:50am pick up my luggage then go to Hawaiian airlines check in luggage and go through security by flight leaving at 11:15am?

You will barely have enough time if your Southwest flight arrives on-time and your bags come out quickly.

  • rechecking bags

If I'm arriving from Australia with Qantas and connecting to Mexico with Aeromexico do I recheck my bags at Tom Bradley or do it when I get to T2.

If your bags are tagged through to Mexico then you will re-check in the International Terminal. If they are only tagged to LAX, then you will have to bring them with you to T2 to re-check them with Aeromexico.

thanks for the advice as usual you've been really helpful.

  • Heathrow - Lax connection

Hi, I'm traveling from London Heathrow to Maui (OGG) via LAX, lay overtime is 3 hours in la, when I arrive in LA do I need to recheck my bag and go through security to get into the terminal for my flight to Hawaii? Note that I'm using united airlines for all my flights to and from Hawaii

Yes, on your way to Hawaii at LAX you will arrive in Terminal 7, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go through security and to your departure gate. On your way back to London then all you have to do in LAX is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

Thanks for the reply, just a follow up question. My girlfriend is traveling from Newark, we are meeting up in LAX but she lands only 1 hour before the Hawaii flight takes off, will this be enough time?

Yes, that is fine. If both her flights are also on United then all she has to do at LAX is walk from her arrival gate to her departure gate.

  • TBIT to T5 DL connection

Taking Virgin Australia arriving TBIT and connecting to DL flight departs T5. it's on a single ticket. Is hour and a half enough time? I remember last time once I cleared custom and recheck the bags, i m outside of the terminal and have to go thru TSA again. so, can't use the tunnel and avoid the need of going thru TSA again? Thanks a lot.

Right, since you are outside security once you clear customs and re-check your bags, you have to walk to T5 outside and go through security in T5. You barely have enough time if everything goes smoothly.

Thanks for the info. Maybe I ll try to request a express pass from the airlines and have the boarding pass ready at the gate when I land... Do you know if I request that during the flight or at the time of check in? Or i need to do that after the flight landed and do it at the arrival gate? Thanks a lot.

There is no such thing as an "express pass" in the US. You will be issued both boarding passes in Australia.

oh, I got one of those before from qantas connecting AA flight in LAX. it got me to a shorter line in T4 and get thru TSA much faster than the regular line. but not sure if V Aus and Delta do that or not.

  • Will I make it?

My flight arrives 945 pm in terminal 2 from FLL. Next flight departs TBIT at 2320. I booked both flights through Qantas as a single booking. Is it safe to assume my bags are checked all the way through? Do I need to go through TSA again? Will I make the 1 hour 35 minute connection. Thanks for the help.

No flights from Fort Lauderdale arrive in Terminal 2. What airline are you flying to LAX? You will have to go through security again in the International Terminal. You have just enough time if everything goes smoothly.

Hi, I'll be arriving at LAX 6.25am on a Fri morning qantas flight, and need to get to Cabo san Lucas by lunchtime if possible. my options are 8.30 or 10 am flights....is two hours enough to get bags and check in again for the cabo flight? If i choose an airline that has both the 8.30 and the 10am flight, i'm hoping if i miss the 8.30 if there was room they'd logically place me on the next flight?? Alaskan airline is my only option for one airline having both the earlier and later flight time thanks for your help!

If both of your tickets are on the same reservation and you book the 8:30 Alaska Airlines flight I think you have a chance. On two separate reservations it would be difficult.

  • time for customs, flght from LGW on Norwegian, connecting to SWA

Arriving at LAX 17:30 on Norwegian. Will I make it to SWA flight at 19:30, checking bags at Southwest?

No, Unless you are incredibly lucky and get through immigration, bag claim and customs really quickly or your flight arrives substantially early I don't think this is possible.

Arriving on AA 721 in Terminal 6 at 8:45 PM. AA has me on flight 73 to Sydney leaving at 9:50 PM from Terminal 4. 2 Questions: is that enough time? And do I have to go through security again to get into Terminal 4?

Yes, that is enough time. There is a tunnel inside security connecting Terminals 4, 5, and 6.

  • Connecting Flight from International to Domestic
    Mar 2, 2016

Hi, I have flight arrived from Taipei, Taiwan at 9:00 pm to LAX with EVA airline. And, my next connecting flight is from LAX to Tampa at 10:30 pm with Delta. I bought the 2 tickets separately. I have a 2 years old toddler and 2 baggages with me. May I know if I will have enough time (total 1 hour and half) to get my baggages, passed through the custom, and re-enter the custom for the domestic flight? Thank you!

No, I really don't think that's enough time.

Thank you, ZAP for your quick response. Can I know what is your recommended time allot between flight connections? 2 hours? or 3 hours? Thanks.

On two separate reservations I recommend at least 3 hours

  • Alaska to Qantas connection

We will be transferring from SEA - LAX - BNE from domestic Alaska Airlines to Qantas. I understand the new connection is open. How does it work with security and passport control? We will pass TSI at SEA and take the flight and arrive at terminal 6. From there, is there any other security? Where do they check our passports? We are Australians but the airlines usually check to be sure we have the right to enter Australia before issuing boarding passes.

There is no passport control when leaving the US. If you have both of your boarding passes just walk to your departure gate. The check-in agent in Seattle will look at your passport and you will show your passport to the Qantas gate agent when boarding your flight.

Thank you Zap, good to know! What about TSA, do we have to be checked again between arrival gate at T6 and departure at TBIT?

I just did this backwards. I went from Sidney on Qantas to LAX and onto seattle with Alaska and it has been a headache. I was told there's no way to avoid exiting the airport and going through security again. Also had to grab checked bags after customs, but only to walk them down a hallway and put them on another conveyer belt. I didnt have walk them to terminal 6 and recheck them. Let's see if they actually make it to my destination though...

TT, a walkway from T4 to the TBIT inside security just opened. There is also a walkway underground from T4 to T6, so you now can go from T6 to the TBIT inside security. Katr, the "backwards" experience when entering the US is quite different.
