  • Can I Make it?! Quick layover with flights booked on different tickets
    Feb 24, 2016
    2
I am flying on Southwest from Dallas to LAX in late April 2016 on a flight landing at 10:05 am in the Southwest terminal. I have a flight leaving at 11:40 am on the same day on Air China to Bangkok. I booked these flights on different tickets. Several questions: 1.Will I have enough time to make the flight connection? 2. Do I have to claim my bags at the Southwest terminal and re-check them at the international terminal since I purchased the flights on different tickets? I've assumed that I don't have to go through Customs or anything of that sort since I am just flying out of the US. I am concerned mostly due to the fact that I purchased the flights on different tickets. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance :)

Yes, you will have to claim your bags from Southwest and take them to the International Terminal to re-check. This is a very very difficult connection, bordering on impossible. Southwest does not transfer bags to or from any other airlines.

    Thank you!

I was lucky enough to get a flight from Miami to Los Angeles and then from Los Angeles to Bangkok. Here's my question my flight from Miami to Los Angeles lands at 10:09 a.m., my flight from Los Angeles to Bangkok takes off at 10:45 a.m. Do I have enough time and yes I have checked luggage as well as carry on of a 2 POUND dog. Yes it is all on the same reservation, and it is all with Delta Airlines all the way through. I need to know well I have to pick my luggage from baggage claim and recheck, will i have to go through security agin for the connected flight, and I also need to know if I'll have time to sprint to the gate and catch the flight. Please help

There is no US Customs when leaving the US. If both flights are on Delta then all you have to do in Los Angeles is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time if your flight from Miami is on-time.

I'm looking at taking a flight that goes from Atlanta to LAX then to Vancouver. It has a 1 hr 33 min layover. Is this enough time to get from one gate to another. Will I have to do anything special since I'm going outside the US besides showing passport during eheckin.

Assuming both flights are on the same reservation, no, you don't have to do anything special.

So no issues with the layover time, correct. Both flights are with Delta, no changing airlines.

Correct, all you have to do in LAX is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

  • Abu Dhabi-LAX-San Jose connection

Hi, My dad is flying on Etihad flight coming from Abu Dhabi to LAX arriving at 2:35pm, then taking American Eagle flight from LAX-SJC at 5:45pm all on a Saturday. My question is, is the customs and immigration process straight forward or confusing? I am concerned about the bags re-check. Will he be able to use the re-check desk? If I fly into LAX to make this process easier for him, will I be able to meet him at international arrivals baggage claim? Thanks.

He will actually pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Abu Dhabi. So all he has to do in LAX is claim his bags. However, since he arrives in the International Terminal, and I'm not aware of there being a domestic baggage claim in the international Terminal, I honestly have no clue where the Etihad baggage claim is at LAX and a google search doesn't help either. Anyway, wherever he claims his bags, he will do so, then just take his bags to the American check-in desk in Terminal 4, then go through security and take the shuttle to the American Eagle remote terminal and board his flight. 3 hours should be plenty of time.

I've found the answer, there is a baggage claim in the TBIT near Terminal 3 for precleared passengers, Etihad has signs that leads their passengers to it. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/practical-travel-safety-security-issues/1670059-arriving-lax-auh-precleared-where-get-baggage.html

Thanks!! So he is only transiting at Abu Dhabi. The origin is AMD. Changing planes at AUH. Will he still clear the US immigration and customs there? Does that mean he will have to get his baggage out at AUH? He has 2 hrs in AUH.

Also, after getting the luggage in T3, are there shuttles from T3 to T4 or is it easy walking?

There is a shuttle but I recommend walking. It's an easy walk.

and yes, he will clear US Immigration and customs in AUH and yes, he will claim his luggage to clear US Customs at AUH then immediately re-check it.

Oh I see. So does he still have to get his bags out at LAX if it is checked all the way through to SJC or can he just go directly to T4?

If it is all on the same reservation then he can go directly to T4. If he has two separate reservations then he will have to claim them and take them to T4 to re-check.

Hello, arriving at LAX at 2:05 from DOH on Qatar and hoping to connect with American Airlines 4:20 domestic flight to PHX. Is this long enough to clear customs and make my flight to PHX? Will only have carry-on.

Should mention that both of these flights are in the afternoon.

Yes, with carry-on only I think that should be enough time.

good evening, I'm flying in on Delta from Atl to LAX arriving at 8:10 then my next leg is on Qantas at 10:15. Will I have to retrieve my luggage? Is this enough time to make this connection?

Yes, you will have to claim your baggage from Delta in T5 and re-check it with Qantas in the International Terminal. You barely have enough time if everything goes perfectly.

  • Terminal B to 7 timing?

Gday , Am flying in @ 7am on United out of Melb, my domestic connection is at 9:15 at terminal 7, hopinh to have my bags checked all the way though, is this enough time to make the connection? Debating to wait for the transfer shuttle or make a run for it.

You should have plenty of time. You will have to claim your bags to go through US Customs, but if they are tagged through to your final destination you can re-check them at the re-check desk in the International Terminal. I suggest walking between terminals.

I had read to allow 3 hours is all, and seeing as i have only 2 , i was a little apprehensive, LAX is a far cry from Launceston airport.

3 hours would be for two separate reservations during peak hours. Seeing as both of your flights are on United, presumably on the same booking, you can get away with a little less.

  • Domestic to international connection time

I will be flying into LAX Term 1 on Southwest on Friday, arriving at 2:30 pm. I have a Lufthansa flight to Munich out of TBIT at 5:05 pm. I will have a checked bag on the SWA flight. Will I have time to make this connection?

Yes, that should be enough time if your Southwest flight is on-time.

Hi everyone, I've never flow international or through LAX so I've been pondering whether or not my connection is possible and it looks like I've found the right place to ask! I'm arriving from PDX on a Southwest flight at 4:35pm on a Saturday. I'll be departing on a Norwegian Air flight at 6:00pm. I will only have carry-on baggage. The only other Southwest flight available arrives at 1:00pm and it's double the cost but it would be well worth it if it was the difference between making and missing my international flight. Thanks for the advice!

I should mention that these tickets are on separate reservations...

With Carry-ons only this is possible, but it really depends on the Southwest flight being on-time and you hurrying to the International Terminal. Have you looked at Alaska Airlines flights from Portland instead?

I was just looking at that actually, I was trying to get away with using rewards points to pay for this leg of my trip but as it turns out I could use them on a Delta flight that would get me there at 3:00pm which is much safer so I think I'll probably go that route. I see that they're opening a tunnel to the international terminal around March does that may that it may be possible for me to get from Terminal 5 to the international terminal without going through security again?

Yes, if the T4-TBIT connector is open when you travel you will be able to go to your departure gate without having to go back through security as long as you already have your Norwegian boarding pass.

Hmmm, and it would appear that it isn't possible to do an online checkin with Norwegian out of LAX so I won't have a boarding pass. It was a nice thought... Thanks for your help!

I am flying from Vegas to LA with American Airlines landing at 8.13pm. My connecting flight is to Sydney with Qantas at 10.30pm. Is this sufficient time? What immigration/customs/security will I need to clear in this time? Thanks

Yes, that should be plenty of time. If all tickets are on the same reservation you just have to walk from Terminal 4 to the International Terminal and go through security (if you are traveling after March you won't even have to go through security as the connector between T4 and the International Terminal will be open). There is no US Customs or Immigration when leaving the US.

I need to transfer from t3 to t5, I only have 1h50min since my plane land, do you think it is possibe? I

What airlines are you flying? do you have checked baggage? That is a very odd connection.

I will arrive with jetblue to LA, then I will need to move to t5 to Delta, Im traveling to Shanghai,. I will arrive at 10.30 in terminal 3 am The flight leaves at 12.20 pm in T5. I will need to checking my luggage and also pass security.

That's barely enough time if everything goes perfectly. It would be a lot easier if you can do your trip without a checked bag.

Hi! Arriving from Tokyo at 1:25...trying to make Southwest flight at 3:55. Is that enought time? Not re-checking bags

With no checked bags I think that might be possible. Check in for your Southwest flight before you leave Japan.

Arrive term 1 need to go to term 2 am I still in transit or have to clear customs and immigration?

Connections are as follows: Arrive SLC -> LAX @ 830am Depart LAX -> BOG @ 1015am and coming back Arrive SAL -> LAX @ 735pm Depart LAX -> SLC @ 10pm Domestic flights are SouthWest and International are Avianca (separate itineraries) US Passport Checked bags both ways I've comfortable crossing LAX with bags and experience says I can do it fast. Do you guys think I'll have enough time to all the necessary things (bags, immigration, security) and still make my flights? THANKS!

Sorry, first time user, didn't expect it to format so poorly.

I think they are all possible. The first one is a bit tight.

What is the best way to get from Terminal 3 to Terminal 2?

Exit Terminal 3, turn left, walk to Terminal 2. You will have to go through security again in Terminal 2. What airlines are you flying?
