  • TRANSFER TIME BETWEEN T3 & T4
    Mar 6, 2014
    4
We plan to arrive at T3 from Honolulu at 05:05 (American Airlines) and depart from T4 at 08:30 (US Airways) for Glasgow (Scotland) via Philapelphia and are not sure if we have sufficient time to make the connection. Also not sure whether we can check our bags right through to Glasgow as American Airlines flight is operating for US Airways.

You have your terminals backwards. Your American flight from Honolulu will arrive in Terminal 4 and your US Airways flight will depart from Terminal 3. If you purchased all your tickets on one reservation then they should be checked all the way through to Glasgow in Honolulu and you won't have to touch them until you get there.

Many thanks ZAP. Do we have sufficient time between flights to make connection?

Yes, that should be plenty of time.

Many thanks for your help ZAP

  • PPT>LAX>JFK

Landing from PPT with qantas T4 at 10.15 going to JFK with delta T5 at 12.20. Is enough time? Think you

QANTAS does not fly from PPT. If you are a nonstop flight from PPT to LAX you are on Air Tahiti Nui, which will arrive at the International Terminal (TBIT). Were both tickets bought on one reservation? If so after you clear customs in the TBIT you can re-check your bags there, otherwise you will have to take them to T5, which is outside to the right and a bit of a walk, and then check your bags with Delta there. You will then have to go through security in T5 and to your gate. You should barely have enough time.

2 hrs transfer time is sufficient. On arrival at T4 you need to go through passport check, pick up bags, go through customs clearance & re-check-in your bags. Then take the escalator down to the tunnel connecting to T5, where you need to go through security check before proceeding to your connecting gate.

Please ignore momar, if you are coming from PPT, you will not use T4.

  • 85min to transfer

Hi, I will be landing at LAX T5 on Delta domestic at about 11:35 pm, and then I will go to TBIT to take Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong at 1:00 am. Is that time enough for rechecking baggages and security? About how long is the security check at midnight? Plz reply, thx!!!

Now I decide not to check any baggage at LAX, and how much time will be saved?

That should be enough time. Especially without checked bags.

  • Terminal R to Termianl -4 and Baggage?
    Feb 20, 2014

Hi, I am arrariving from Bangalore-London-LAX-San Diego with British Airways and domestic AA from LAX to San diego, Will there be Auto Transfer of Baggage to Terminal -4, pls. advice.

LAX does not have a "Terminal R". British Airways flights arrive at the International Terminal (TBIT). After you clear US customs there is a big sign for connecting passengers directing you to where you can re-check your bags. Then you just have to walk to Terminal 4, which is the next terminal on the right, and go through security.

  • Connecting Virgin Atlantic to Delta

I am hoping to book a flight on delta but want to make sure we have enough time. Our flight from LHR arrives at 235 and we need to clear customs etc get our bags? and transfer to Terminal 5. Our Delta flight leaves at 545...is this enough time?

Yes, that should be plenty of time. To get between Terminal 2 and Terminal 5 you can either walk around the upper or lower level (counter-clockwise or with the flow of traffic) or take the shuttle bus that runs on the lower level.

  • TBIT to 7?
    Feb 19, 2014
    1
Arriving TBIT at 640am leaving thru terminal 7 at 12:30. Not worried about layover just process of getting from point A to point B. Any help?

You have two options: exit TBIT and walk, to the right to T4 and continue on to T7, or take the LAX bus Route A on lower arrival level island under sign 'LAX shuttle airline connection', which runs every 12-15 mins. For terminal details open: www.ifly.com/lax, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text.

  • 85 minutes connection
    Feb 11, 2014

I have a 85 minutes flight connection between T6 where I land and T4 Will it be enough ?

Yes. that should be enough time if your first flight is on-time, although you might have some trouble if you have checked baggage that you have to transfer yourself and have any delays whatsoever. Were your tickets bought on one reservation?

Yes, I bought tickets on one reservation with AA. From Portland to LAX it is operated by alaska and from LAX to Vegas by AA. I assume that I do not have to transfer baggage right?

Right, in that case you just have to go outside of T6, walk to T4, and go through security. You should have enough time.

    Thanks for your help

  • Do I need to clear US Customs
    Feb 6, 2014
    5
Hi, arriving from SYD on United at Terminal 6 and connecting to YVR at terminal 2. Do I need to clear US custom, recheck my bags and rescreen security at LAX? i.e. I cannot buy any liquid duty free items at SYD? Thanks

Yes, you will have to do all that stuff. If you buy any liquid duty free items you can put them in your checked baggage before you re-check it. Also, you will arrive in Terminal 7, not 6, but the difference there is negligible.

Do you think 2.5 hrs be enough for the transfer? thanks

Yes, you should have plenty of time.

Thanks so much for your help ZAP. Greatly appreciated. Not sure why there is no inside transfer :-(

LAX wasn't designed to be an international connecting hub. Luckily the weather in LA is usually nice, so you might enjoy the fresh air after the long flight from Australia.

  • 1.5hour connection

My wife (a US citizen) and two young children are flying into LAX from Sydney, arriving at 8:15am (Delta - Terminal 5). They then have to catch a domestic flight at 9:45am (also Delta - Terminal 5). Is this even possible? Do you have any tips for them to make this connection?

They should have plenty of time. Immigration lines shouldn't be very bad and as you mention, everything is in the same terminal. They will go through Immigration, claim their baggage, go through customs, re-check their bags, go up to the departure level, and go through security and to their gate. Terminal 5 isn't a very large facility.

  • How much time for customs/immigration
    Jan 25, 2014
    1
I will be landing at LAX at 8:30 AM on Alaska Airlines from Mexico City and then need to catch another flight to Portland. How much time between flights is needed?

90 minutes should be sufficient, assuming both flights are on Alaska.

  • International transfer within TBIT
    Jan 20, 2014

I am flying from Tokyo into LAX on a JL flight (arriving at TBIT at 11:15 am) and only have 2 hr 25 mins to transit to a LAN Chile flight (scheduled to fly at 13:40) to Lima (flight leaving from TBIT). I am a foreigner. Does it sound like I can catch the connecting flight? I understood I will need to have my visa, then go through imigration, get my bags and go through customs. Is it correct? Then should I expect that I should be able to drop my bag into the system again after the customs? Is it also correct that I would not need to clear security again as I do not need to change terminal?? Thanks in advance and appreciate your advice as it looks like seldom ppl post on the web about an international transfer within TBIT.

    1. All international arrivals at U.S. airports need to go through passport check, retrieve checked bags, go through customs clearance and - if transferring to another flight - re-check-in bag where indicated. 2. Bradley Terminal has a South & a North Concourse (watch overhead screens for your flight & gate number) - reached after separate TSA passenger screening - offering limited food & drink, shops: The South Concourse houses Gates 106-101 (left); and The North Concourse houses Gates 119-123 (right), with access (at gate 123) to Remote Bus Gates 136-145. You have plenty of transit time.

Thanks. Glad to hear that I should be able to make it. Just to make sure I am not misunderstanding it: 1) after I rechecked my bag (as these two segments are issued in 1 single ticket I suppose they should mark my final destination(in this case, LIM) on my luggage, so I do not need to carry my luggage to the airline counter again but just drop the bag where indicated after I go through customs. 2) As you said "After TSA passenger screening" do you mean I would need to go through "security" checking again (that means queueing with those passengers entering TBIT from outside)? That doesn't make too much sense to me.... Because from various comments from different forums the queues could be very long and this somehow makes me worried.

You WILL have to re-clear security as after you exit customs and re-check your bag, you will be in the non-secure area.

  • where to go

Hi I'm flying into LA from Sydney Australia with Qantas at terminal 4 at 9.40am and I have a another flight at 2.00pm with American Airlines to Houston at terminal 1 do I have to pick up my baggage and check in with american Airlines and will that b enough time and going through customs have no idea where to pick up my luggage at the airport if anyone knows and can help me that would be great

You have your Terminals a little mixed up. At LAX, Qantas flights from Sydney arrive in the Tom Bradley International Terminal. There you will go through US Immigration, pick up your baggage, and then go through US customs. There's no way to get lost doing this as you will be funneled the correct way. You will then follow the signs to the re-check desk and re-check your bags. You will then go outside to the curbfront and walk to the right. The next terminal you come to will be Terminal 4 which is where your American Airlines flight will depart. You will have plenty of time.

    Thanks for your help

  • first time flying
    Jan 13, 2014

Hi! I am flying for the first time in one month and have a few questions about what will happen during my layover that may seem silly. I am flying from Toronto Pearson (YYZ) to LAX with American Airlines then from LAX to Brisbane (BNE) with Quantas. I arrive at Terminal 4 at 9:15 on a Sunday and depart from Terminal 4 at 11:50 the same evening. My first question: What do I do when I get off the plane at LAX? Do I go through immigration, collect my checked bags, clear customs, re enter the terminal, check in and go through security all over again? If this is so then I am worried I did not leave enough time between the flights? Thank you in advance for any advice, I am getting a quite nervous.

You will pre-clear US Immigration in Toronto. At LAX all you will have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate, which as you mention, will both be in the same terminal. You should have plenty of time.

  • Changing from international flight to Domestik flight at lax airport

We will arrive with a Child at terminal t7 Gate 76. with united from London. And After 2,5 hours Domestik flight with united to hawai from terminal t6. Do we have to pickup the laggage and go through Customs and Check again ? Or the united Airline will Take care of laggage Transfer to Domestik flight?how to handle the?

Yes, on arrival at LAX you need to go through passport check, retrieve checked bags, go through customs clearance and - if transferring to another flight - re-check-in bag. Terminals 6 & 7 are connected at their secured areas - proceed to security check with your boarding pass to Hawaii and follow signs to T6 with gates 60 to 62, followed by gates 64A -65B & gates 66 -69B.

  • Why Did Security Take My Ham Sandwiches?
    Jan 10, 2014
    1
Recently my wife and I were transiting LAX via Alaska Airlines from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to Vancouver, Canada. We went through customs at Tom Bradley, picked up our baggage and proceeded to drop off our baggage for the flight from LAX to Vancouver. We had to pass through Customs one last time to hand in our declaration and were asked if we were bringing back any fruits etc,. We said no just our lunch. The Officier asked what kind and I responded, 3 ham and cheese sandwiches. He marked and circled 3A on our declaration and told us we had to go through another baggage screening and also give up our 3 ham and cheese sandwiches. I would add here all officiers were very polite. What I don't understand is why we had to give oup our 3 ham and cheese sandwiches?

Because you're not allowed to bring meat into the US from abroad: https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/82/~/travelers-bringing-food-into-the-u.s.-for-personal-use
