I am flying from Newark to LAX and then from LAX to Melbourne. How much time will I need to get through customs and make it to my next flight, both on the way there and back? I am flying United Airlines.

My aunt (78 years old-does not need assistance) will be traveling by herself, departing MEL on Qantas Airways, arriving LAX @ 7:10 AM. Then departing LAX on Qantas @11:10 AM for IND. What can I tell her to expect as far as the procedure she will need to go through in getting from one flight to the other in the LAX airport? Would like to make her comfortable in advance with the process.

We are arriving from San Francisco on Virgin at 20.45 (on a round the world airfare with Emirates & Qantas) at terminal 3 and flying out from Tom Bradley terminal with Qantas at 22.50. Do we just walk to Tom B terminal and is that enough time?

Arriving from Cancun on Delta airlines at 9.25pm and connecting flight to Brisbane on Virgin Australia at 10.50pm. Tickets were brought separately. Can I have my checked baggage transferred to the connecting flight at request? And will this be enough time for the connection? Many thanks

I'll be flying to LAX but not a non-stop flight, will I have to go through customs for every airport I go to?

You will go through US Customs at the first airport in the US that you land at.

Hi thanks for your response. Will I need to go through security and immigration on arrival st LAX with Alaska Airlines from Fairbanks and Anchorage before collecting my baggage? Will I have to then go through another security area with Cathay Pacific?

Only international arrivals at U.S. need to go through immigration. Alaska is in Terminal 6 (T6) - however, some of its arrivals are also at Bradley Terminal ('TBIT' or TB)--your ticket should indicate which terminal; while Cathay is in the Bradley Terminal . If you bought both flights on one ticket, bags will automatically be transferred - if not, (and your Alaska flights arrives at T6), find out fom Alaska if they will transfer- or else you would have to take your bags along & check them in at TBIT's Alaska counter. (From T6, you would need to board the LAX bus Route A stopping on lower arrival level island in front of each terminal, under sign 'LAX shuttle airline connection', which runs every 12-15 mins. Your next stops will be T7, T8, T1 - T3, and TBIT - 6 stops or about 15-18 mins.) On arrival at TBIT, you need to go through security check before proceeding to your gate.

You will arrive in Terminal 6 and depart from the Bradley Terminal. When you get to the International Terminal you will have to get your Cathay boarding pass and go through security. It is much faster to walk from T6 to the International Terminal than to take the shuttle bus.

We arrive at lax at 8 am at terminal 5 from sydney and have a flight to msp at 11.30 am from terminal 5 aswell have family members come up to see us on our stop over its it worth them coming or is the 3 and half hours not long enough of a stopover

You'll be out of customs at about 8:30 and will have to head back through security at about 10:30, so they will be able to see you for maybe 2 hours. It's up to you to decide whether you think that's worth it or not.

Also will you be moved through quicker with a toddler going through customs thanks for your previous reply

No, a toddler doesn't help you cut the line.

  • Lost Luggage at the Connection Counter
    Sep 23, 2014
Hello, My mother flew from Japan to LAX. She received her luggage and cleared custom. Right outside of the door, there is a connection counter. She re-checked her luggage there at the connection counter. That was huge mistake. Her next flight was with SouthWest. She should've taken her luggage and check it at their counter. Now, we don't know where her luggage is. We think it's at somewhere in LAX. But nobody seems to know who has it. Does anybody know if it was checked at connection counter by accident, who would keep it as unclaimed property? (I am not sure why luggage hander did not realize her tag said through LAX on her tag...)

It is probably in the baggage office of the airline she flew to LAX.

Thank you, ZAP. They said since she's already retrieve it from them, they have nothing to do with... I'll keep trying.

Making an international connection through LAX. Scheduled to arrive in Terminal 7 (LAX), and departing Terminal 1 (LAX). I have about 90 minutes to make the connection. Any suggestions for getting through this transfer quickly and with minimal fuss?

There are no LAX-FRA flights from Terminal 1. Terminal 1 is used by Southwest Airlines. What airlines are you flying?

  • Layover - anxious

I'm flying United from Kansas to Sydney. My layover time from LAX to SYD is 53 minutes after I land from Denver(connecting flight). Terminal 7 to Terminal 1. Is that enough time? I'm only taking carry-ons. If I don't make it, since it's all one airline, will they set up another flight free of charge? Never flown before.

United does not use Terminal 1. All United flights are in Terminals 6,7, and 8 and all United gates at LAX are connected inside security.

If I am flying in on Alaska from Mexico, and departing to SJC on American, on two separate reservations, is it possible to recheck my bags outside of Immigration and Customs or do I need to recheck them at American?

Alaska and American do have an interline agreement, so you can ask the Alaska agent in Mexico if they can tag your bag through to SJC by showing your AA confirmation. However, they are not obligated to do so since you bought separate reservations. However, if they do, then you can re-check your bags immediately after exiting customs rather than having to take them to T4 to recheck at the AA counter.

    Thank you ZAP

  • Shuttle

From T7, which is the cheapest shuttle I can take to reach down town hotels

You have to go through USDA inspection leaving SJU. You won't have to do anything with your baggage in Miami as San Juan->Miami is considered a domestic flight. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate which will be in the same terminal.

Customs/Immigration procedures is for international arrivals at U.S.A. You are an international arrival at LAX.
