Managua Sandino MGA Airport Overview
Managua Augusto Sandino International Airport MGA serves the Central American country of Nicaragua and its capital city Managua. Managed by EAAI, it is considered one of the best and most modern airports in Central America--thanks to extensive renovation and extension projects completed in the last decade.
Nicaragua, known as the land of lakes and volcanoes, offers visitors countless tourist attractions and is known for its abundance of natural wealth, the warmth of its people and its history and customs.
The Airport is located on Lake Managua, 7 miles east of the city of Managua, and is the country's main airport, accessible directly via the Carretera Norte C1 or the Carretera A Sabana Grande.
With one long runway and 1.2 million passengers in 2012, Managua Augusto Sandino International Airport is a focus city for Panamanian airline Copa and its national carrier Nicaraguense de Aveiacion operating under Grupo TACA, and is served by by domestic & international airlines offering direct and connecting flights to all points of the globe.
NOTE: Departure tax of US$35 is included in the ticket price (passengers using the airport for a stopover under eight hours are exempted), while arriving passengers must pay an INTUR tax of US$5 (except citizens from the CA-4--Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras & El Salvador). All taxes are subject to change.
The passenger terminal of Managua Augusto Sandino Airport is divided into an East Wing (international sector) and a West Wing (domestic sector). Its domestic airline La Costena (tel. 505 263-2142, Ext. 2203; fax 505 263-1281) has its check-in counters in the West Wing, while its international airlines (currently American, Copa, Delta, Spirit, United, & TACA ) have their check-in desks in the East Wing.
Amenities and services inside the passenger terminal include: Tourist/information desk, currency exchange (at Exit Hall), bank and ATMs, a cafeteria, and ice cream parlor, post office, souvenir and duty-free shops, lounges, rental car desks, hotel desks, and more.
The VIP lounge (tel. 505 233-1624, ext. 2355/99) on level 2, next to international departure and boarding lounges, has a five-tier rate option for: Standard, Corporate, Affiliated Credit Cards, and Minors/Infants. Its services include checking in baggage and clearing documents with customs, immigration, & airline; bar service; snacks, tv & internet access.
Parking at Managua Airport: A small parking lot in front of the passenger terminal with 12 spaces serves as long- and short-term parking facility.
To get from Augusto Sandino Airport to your destination, you can rent a car (outside the Customs area: Dollar, Hertz, Payless, Thrifty & Toyota), take a bus or a taxi: Public bus 266 departs every 15 minutes from the Airport, while airport-authorized taxis ('Las Mercedes Taxi Cooperative') can be obtained from 7am to the last flight in. The Tourist information desk is your best bet to obtain advice on safe and timely transportation options in and around the City.
