International Travelers at Melbourne MEL Airport
Upon arrival at Melbourne Airport, passengers must proceed to the Entry Control Point. Have your passport & completed incoming passenger card ready.
Once processed, you may proceed to baggage reclaim to collect your bags.
Some Australian and New Zealand Passport holders now have the option to self-process through passport control using SmartGate. This is an easy, two-step process which performs the customs and immigration checks usually conducted by a Customs and Border Protection officer. It offers travelers flying into Melbourne another safe efficient way to clear through passport control. To use SmartGate, travelers must 18 or over and have completed the Incoming Passenger Card.
After collecting your baggage, proceed to the exiting point where your Incoming Passenger Card will be checked by an officer prior to passing through Customs and Border Protection and the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service.
Declare any necessary items, as there are severe penalties for failing to declare articles that are prohibited, restricted or for which you are required to pay duty/sales tax.
The Australian Customs and Border Protection Service has a guide for international travelers to familiarize themselves with Australia’s laws regarding prohibited and restricted goods, the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) and personal duty-free concessions.
For further information about what can and cannot be brought into Australia, contact the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service. Tel. within Australia: 1300 363 263. Tel. outside Australia: (61 2) 6275 6666; or visit www.customs.gov.au Payment of duty and/or tax can be made in cash, travelers cheques in Australian Dollars and by all major credit cards. Cash amounts of $A10,000 or more need to be reported on arrival to a Customs and Border Protection officer (excluding travelers cheques).
Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS)
If you have any animal or plant item with you, or packed in your luggage, you must declare it on your Incoming Passenger Card. Note: Unaccompanied baggage may attract inspection charges.
For further information about quarantine restrictions, please contact the Australian Quarantine & Inspection Service, Tel: (+61) (02) 6272 3933; www.aqis.gov.au
The Meeting Point is a clearly marked area to meet and greet passengers upon arrival. It is located next to the Groups and Tours desk at the southern end of T2 Arrivals. A large red sign clearly denotes the area.
