  • Layover in Miami
    Jan 4, 2017
Hi I am traveling from Atlanta to go to Trinidad but I have to layover in Miami for about 2 hours what is the procedure to go on the flight when I reach Miami

If both flights are on American all you have to do in Miami on your way to Trinidad is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have plenty of time.

Yes they are both American airlines Will my luagge be in Trinidad already or in Miami

Your luggage will fly on the same flights as you, you won't have to claim it in Miami.

  • San Juan - Miami - LA connection 1hr
    Jan 3, 2017
I am flying with American Airlines from San Juan to Sydney via Miami to LA. The connection from landing in Miami from Sam Juan to the flight to LAX is only 1 hour. The travel agency has said that AA have stated it is a "guaranteed connection time" (whatever that really means) and that it is possible to do. Is this realistic? Also will our bags be checked in from San Juan straight through to Sydney or will they need to be collected in Miami? Am i right to assume we don't have to go through US customs in Miami? Thanks

Yes, that is possible, flights from Puerto Rico to the mainland are considered domestic flights. All you have to do in Miami is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You won't see your bags until you get to Sydney.

That sounds great, thanks for your advice, much appreciated.

I am thinking of getting a flight from St Thomas US Virgin Isles to Bermuda all on AA. Can I clear American customs and Immigration in St Thomas or do I have to go through them in Miami? Also will my bags be put through directly on to my Bermuda flight? Is 45 minutes enough time for the connection ? The next flight is a 6 hour wait over which would be great to avoid if possible.

St. Thomas is considered part of the US and there is no US Customs when leaving the US. All you have to do in Miami is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time if the flight from St. Thomas is on-time.

Many thanks Zap I have booked for the earlier flight so just hope the St Thomas one is on time- or early!! Many thanks your advice was most helpful . Roz

  • Layover time

Sorry if this is a repeat because I tried to post before but not sure it worked... I have an American Airlines flight to MIA from San Jose (Costa Rica) arriving at 5.10pm on 26 Jan and then have a Qatar flight that night at 7.40pm to Doha. Will there be enough time for this layover? Is there anything I must do to speed up the process? Thanks!

Yes, that should be enough time if everything goes smoothly.

Hi. Will be flying from Milan to Cancun with AA. Have a 2.20 h layover in MIA. Have two kids (4 and 5) travelling with me. Will it be enough time? Will I have to recollect my bags? Is there any dedicated customs lane for families?

There is no customs lane for families. You will have to go through US Immigration, Customs, and Security but won't have to claim and re-check your bags. You should have enough time.

Will I have enough time with a 2 hr layover in Miami .....Flying to Aruba ?

Yes, that is plenty of time. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto. All you have to do in Miami is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

Hello, flying with from London to MIA and connecting to Barbados with 2 hrs layover. Both flights operated by AA on one ticket, do I have to pick up bags and clear customs in MIA?

You will have to go through US Immigration, customs, and security, but you will not have to claim and re-check your bags. You should have just enough time.

  • UIO - MIA - BOS
    Dec 23, 2016
Funny, like the previous person, my return flight from Quito through MIA to Boston was changed. I now have exactly a two hour layover in MIA. I have read so much about how awful MIA is to get through customs. Is two hours enough to get through customs with only carry on luggage and both flights are through AA? Right at noon time?

With only carry-ons that should be enough time if everything goes smoothly.

  • layover enough time?
    Dec 23, 2016
I am arriving from Quito, Ecuador at 12:00 and the airline just changed my flight out to Minneapolis/St. Paul to 1:45. Is that enough time to get through customs? Both flights are on American Airlines.

That's barely enough time if everything goes perfectly.

We are flying from DFW to Miami then from Miami on to Barcelona. Our first flight was changed and now we only have 1:02 to connect between our two AA flights. Will that be enough if our bags are checked through?

Yes, all you have to do is just walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

  • Connecting in MIA from JFK onto AUA (Aruba)
    Dec 21, 2016
Hi, I have a flight from JFK scheduled to land in MIA at 5:19pm and the connecting flight will leave at 6:20pm to AUA. Will that be enough time assuming the JFK flight is on time? It's all with AA on the same ticket so no baggage to collect.

I'm from the UK if that makes any difference passport/security-wise

Yes, that is enough time. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

  • Flight Zurich-Miami-Nassau
    Dec 21, 2016
Will be flying from Zurich via Miami (SWISS) to Nassau (AA), on two separate tickets. How much time do I need for the transit?

I would want at LEAST 3 hours, maybe a little more.

Hi, I'm traveling from Trinidad to Miami then onto Havana, all on AA same reservation with a 4 hour layover in Miami. My flight from Trinidad arrives at 11:11am and departs to Havana at 3:21pm. Do i clear customs & immigration, collect my bags and recheck them? What's the procedure pls?

You will have to go through US Immigration, Customs, and Security but don't have to claim your bags since you're on an international to international connection through Miami all on AA. You have plenty of time.

Thank you for your quick reply one more question on my way back my flight is from Havana to Miami to Port of Spain, I have a 4 hour layover do I have to go through customs/immigration/ security or simply walk to my gate?

The procedure on the return will be exactly the same, Immigration, Customs, and Security.

    Thank you

Hi! I'm flying fro MCO to GRU via MIA. My flight fro MCO arrives at 8:45 pm and The other departs at 10:00 pm. Is this enough time? Do I have to claim and recheck my bags? It's a flight booked entirely with AA in the same reservation.

Yes, that is enough time. You don't need to do anything with your bags in Miami on the way to GRU. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

Thanks for the quick reply, Zap! Hope everything turns out fine!

  • Grenada-MIA-LAX Connection Time
    Dec 14, 2016
We are traveling on 3/15/17 from Grenada to Miami on AA 982 arriving MIA at 11:24A. We depart on AA 139 to LAX at 12:43P. We have both Global Entry and Mobile Passport. Do we have enough time to clear customs, transfer our bags, and make flight 139? We have one hour and 19 minutes.

With Global Entry you might have a chance without checked bags, but I think with the checked bags it will make it really difficult, especially at that time of year. I won't say it's impossible (and you do have a sliver of a chance because of global entry), but I wouldn't try it myself.
