  • 1 hour and 50 min layover enough time ?
    Mar 3, 2015
Im Canadian flying from st lucia to toronto with a one hour and 50 min layover. once i land in miami will i need to go through customs and will i need to re check my bag or will it be brought to the next plane ? im flying with american airlines the entire time. Will I have enough time im kind of stressing out about this. if someone could enlighten me on this or answer the questions i would be grateful !

Upon arrival in Miami you will go through US Immigration and Customs. however, since you are on an International to International itinerary you should not have to claim your bags, but confirm that with the AA agents in St. Lucia and Miami. Then you will go through security and to your departure gate. Miami is a very busy international airport. 1 hr 50 minutes is barely enough if everything goes smoothly.

Thanks for the info, if I miss the connecting flight what will happen?

  • CUN - MIA - LIR

My daughter is a US citizen currently living in Mexico for a study abroad program. In June, she will be flying from Cancun to Liberia, Costa Rica with 1 stop in Miami - 1 hour/16 min. Will she need to go through US Customs and, if so, is that enough time for her to catch her connecting flight to Costa Rica?

Yes, she has to go through US Customs and that is not enough time for her to make that transfer.

    Thank you for the information!

  • Group of 20 pax through MIA to SJO, Costa Rica
    Feb 26, 2015
Hello I will be responsible for getting a group of 20 pax through MIA on AA. Departing LHR on March 9th, arriving MIA at 3:35pm Continuing to SJO, departing at 18:25 For international arrivals/departures it looks as though both are from Terminal D with AA. Is 2 hours and 40 minutes enough time to get a group through Passport Control, collect cases and Customs and bag recheck? AA has told me we do need to collect our cases and recheck. For our return, we have even less time - only 1 hour and 45 min! Do we have to collect our cases again and pass through Customs and recheck cases or just do Passport control. I couldn't get an answer from AA for our return flight. Also, will there be additional security checks after customs coming/going. I need to be able to inform pax if they can purchase Dutyfree or not! Grateful for any information on arrival/departure terminals, procedure and walking distances. Many thanks.

Since you are on an international to International connection you should not have to claim and re-check your bags. On the return you might have some difficulty with that short of a connection. You go through the standard security check after clearing customs. If you will not be claiming your bags in MIA, then they cannot purchase duty free except in MIA (not in LHR or SJO).

Hello ZAP - I thought we wouldn't have to re-check bags as well, but AA keeps insisting that we do. One last question, I see that AA has departures from Terminals D and E - if we arrive to D and depart from E, is that walkable or must we get some sort of tram or skytrain? Many thanks for your help - great information.

D and E are connected. Often call-center employees aren't very well informed.

Hello, I will arrive to MIA by a US Airways flight from London Heathrow at 8.09 pm and I will have to take an AA plane to Nassau by 9.30 pm. Not having to claim baggage, will I have enough time to catch the plane?

That should barely be enough time. Note that your flight to Miami will also be operated by American.

Now that the new Immigration/Customs facility is open in Terminal D, how long does it typically take to get through and get to the gate in D, with no checked bags, only carry ons?

It really depends on the time of day. In early Morning and Mid-Afternoon it's probably the longest. Probably 40ish minutes.

Will be arriving around 11 am on a Monday. I have 1 hr 45 min layover. Think it's possible?? American airlines all the way. And will be one of the first off the plane.

Yes, that should be enough time.

Thank you so much for all your help !

  • Traveling from Peru to Seattle through MIA
    May 1, 2014
I am going to be traveling from Lima, Peru to Seattle, WA with a connection through MIA on Sept 20th. My LAN flight from Peru arrives at 7:50 am at Concourse J. The Delta flight to Seattle leaves at 10:15 am from Concourse H. Is 2 hrs going to be enough time for me to clear customs and passport control? I'm a US citizen and will only have carry on luggage. Thank you so very much for your help!

Please note that Delta does not fly from Miami to Seattle. The only airline that flies there nonstop is American.

Thank you so much! Yes, unfortunately, AA isn't a preferred airline for me, so I chose to have an hour layover in Atlanta on the way back. Would you have any suggestions regarding the time frame I listed? Thank you again!

OK, you should have plenty of time, especially considering you won't have checked baggage.

    Wonderful! Thank you so much!

  • from MIA airport to port of the cruise
    Apr 6, 2014
I will take AA from Toronto to MIA airport 1:30 pm and my cruise Embarkation time is 5:00 pm ,cruise disembarkation time is 7:00am and my flight will be 10:00 am ,can I make it?

You should have plenty of time if your flight to Miami is on-time. However, you will have a really hard time making that 10 AM return flight.

  • Passport Control and US Customs
    Mar 30, 2014
I am keeping my baggage all carry-on. No baggage claim. I am a US citizen, returning from vacation in Peru through MIA. My connecting flight is American Airlines to my final destination, SFO. (San Francisco) According to the MIA map, I arrive at MIA on LAN in the South Terminal. I depart on American Airlines in the North Terminal. I have two hours and 5 minutes between flights to clear Passport Control and US Customs. Even without baggage claim, I might not make it. My questions: Can I choose which terminal to be processed through -- since I have no bags to claim? The MIA website says only: "International arriving passengers will proceed to U.S. Customs and Border Protection's passport control. After clearing passport control, passengers will proceed to collect baggage and clear U.S. Customs." That's very clear. BUT: Since I have no baggage to claim, can I just go over to NorthTerminal and get processed there? I may be wrong but I have a feeling North Terminal may be faster/easier than SouthTerminal and I have to end up at North Terminal for my departure anyway. Thanks!

No, you have to clear immigration and customs in the South Terminal since you will be funneled that way, there will be no other option. By carrying on the only thing you skip is having to stop at the baggage claim and re-check desk.
