I am flying from Costa Rica to Buffalo NY (destination). I will be entering the U.S. at Miami airport. I am a U.S. citizen. What are the steps when I arrive and in what order do I do them. Example fill out declaration form (where?) retrieve checked luggage? Do I have to go back through security after getting luggage or where do I go? If you have specific directions for Miami airport that would be even more helpful. Thanks for any responses!

  • Transit time though MIA from Europe en route to Provo (Caicos)

I fly from Milan via Miami to Providenciales (PLS) in Turks and Caicos on a saturday afternoon mid Oct. I absolutely cannot overnight in Miami. What is the minimum transfer time I should allow? Thanks so much for your help

Sorry I forgot to add I am flying in and out with AA - I am not a US Citizen and I will have baggage

The minimum I would consider is 2 hours. You won't have to claim your bags since you are on an International to International connection with both flights on AA. But you will have to go through US Immigration, Customs, and Security.

Hey guys. I have an ITI flight with a connection in MIA for 4hours and 31 minutes. Is this enough time for a layover? I'm flying with AA for both legs of my flight. Also any tips on what I should expect as I am a first time flyer?

Yes, that should be plenty of time. Upon arrival in MIA you will go through US Immigration, Customs, and Security.

Hi everyone. I am flying from POS to LHR and I have a layover of 2h and 31 mins at MIA. I was wondering if this is enough time to collect my bags, clear security and customs then board my next flight on time. Thanks in advance.

I forgot to add that I'm flying with American Airlines for both legs of my journey

Since both flights are on AA and you are making an International to International connection, you should not have to claim your bags. However, you do have to go through US Immigration, customs, and security. You should have enough time if everything goes smoothly.

Thanks a lot. I'm going on June 26th next year. Since that is during summer would there be long lines at security, immigrations etc?

Who knows, your exact schedule is likely to change by then anyway.

  • London to Buenos Aires transit in Miami

our flight from LHR lands at MIA at 18.25. OUr flight to Buenos Aires takes off at 20.00. How do we transit at MIA?

What airlines are you flying? Are your tickets on two separate reservations or one reservation?

American airlines. Lhr to Mia AA operated by British Airways. One booking.

You will have to go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, go through security and to your departure gate. You barely have enough time if everything goes perfectly.

Thanks. Why do we have to get our bags and recheck them? If it is one reservation surely they would go straight on?

You have to in order to go through US customs. It's a federal law.

Ok. What is weight restriction on carry on baggage?

You'd have to ask British Airways. In the US they don't weigh carry-ons, they measure them.

Thanks for your help. We are considering travelling with only hand luggage to save time claiming and rechecking bags. Will this save us enough time to make our connection.

Yes, that would save some time.

  • Connection from DFW to BGI

I am considering booking flight 1364 from DFW to MIA and MIA to BGI flight 1089 May 7, 2017. There is only a 50 minute layover. Is that enough time? I know this is way in advance, but I would be very grateful for your assistance.

Yes, that would be enough time. All you have to do in Miami on your way to Bridgetown is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

I am flying with American Airlines from Denver International Airport to Miami, then to the Bahamas. What is the process that I will need to go through? Will I go through customs in Denver or wait untill Miami. We are leaving at 1:59 am and arriving in Miami at 5:50. I will then leave Miami at 9:44 and then to the Bahamas. Will I need to pickup my baggage in Miami and then recheck it for the flight to the Bahamas or will it be automatically sent on to Miami?

There is no US Customs when leaving the US. You won't have to do anything with your bags in Miami.

Arriving from Port of Spain, Trinidad 10:38 am on Monday 6/6 with connecting flight to Charlotte NC at 1:15 pm with a checked bag. Is 2.5 hours enough time to make the flight to CLT on time? Haven't flown in >15 yrs & concerned by recent press about airports' long lines & stranded travelers.

It should be just enough time if things go smoothly. Miami doesn't seem to be as badly affected as some other airports.

If things don't go smoothly, is it the airline's responsibility to make sure I get another flight or pay for a hotel room for the night if I have to stay there?

    Thanks for the quick reply!

I am flying from Chicago to Quito, Ecuador. I have a layover in Miami with the same airline. Does anyone know if I have to recheck my bags in Miami before I fly to Quito? I only have 45 mints to get my flight from Miami to Quito, so I am a little nervous....

No, you don't have to do anything with your bags in Miami on your way to Quito if both flights are on American. There is no US Customs when leaving the US.

Hi, I am arriving from Caracas (Santa Barbara airline) to MIA at 10:30am, need to go through immigration, retrieve bags, go through customs, check-in bags again, and then to my connecting flight to D.C. at 2:00 pm with American Airlines. Will I have enough time to make it to my connecting flight? What do I need to do? Thanks!

That should be just enough time. You will have to take your bags with you to the American Airlines check in desk after you clear customs then go through security and to your departure gate.

We are UK visitors on ESTA planning a visit to Florida in November.and our flight is due to land in MIA at 18.45. I want to know if we would have enough time to clear immigration and customs to catch a 19.45 onward flight to Orlando. Think it is too tight, but just want confirmation we would make a 19.45

No, 1 hour is absolutely not enough time to make an International to Domestic connection in Miami. You need to contact whoever you booked that ticket to and get it changed.

Thanks for that - haven't booked that flight yet just wanted to know if possible!
