  • Flying via EWR with 10 h layover - can I exit airport?

I will be flying United from Knoxville to Delhi via Newark with luggage checked through to final destination. I am Indian with Green card. I have 10 h layover in Newark; Can I exit the airport, leaving my checked in luggage behind? Do I need to take anyone's permission to do so?

No, you don't need any permission to leave the airport. Yes, you can leave the airport.

Booked United 4495 & 1553 from YUL to SJO Feb. 20, 2016 with 1 hr layover in EWL. Is is enough time to make connection? Returning from SJO to YUL March 05 on United 1554 & 4635 with 1h45 mn layover in EWL. Again, is that enough time? TX.

Both ways it would be barely enough time. On the way to SJO you will pre-clear US Immigration and customs in Montreal so you just have to go from your arrival gate to your departure gate at EWR. However, you will likely arrive in Terminal A and depart from Terminal C, meaning you'll have to take the shuttle bus (inside security) between terminals. On the return, in Newark you will have to go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then likely go to terminal A, go through security and to your departure gate. Both connections are possible, but are really cutting it close. I'd say the 60 minutes on YUL-EWR-SJO would be easier than the 1 hr 45 mins on SJO-EWR-YUL.

If we have only carry-on luggage will the return connection still remain tight? TX again for your precious help.

Yes, carry-ons only will make SJO-EWR-YUL easier.

  • 6 hours in Newark

My group is flying from Austin, Texas connecting at Newark to an onward destination. We arrive in Newark at 3:15pm and the next flight is not until 9:30pm. Is this 5-6 hours time scale enough time to visit downtown Manhattan and return in time for the connecting flight, going through security etc? I'm assuming our checked in luggage will be checked in at Austin and straight through to our destination. Is this so? Or will we have to collect the baggage and re-check it in for the connecting flight? We are travelling with my father who has never been to New York, so it would be nice for him to pay a visit., albeit a very quick one. But would this be too much of an uncomfortable rush? Look forward to your answers guys. Many thanks.

No, you will not have to do anything with your baggage in Newark. The time you have would only allow you about 60-90 minutes in Manhattan.

Hi ZAP, thanks for letting me know that.

Hi, I have booked the flights from BOM - BRU - EWR - BUF. My layover time in EWR is for 2 hrs. will this be sufficient time to clear immigration / custom clearance and baggage. Kindly advise

If all tickets are on the same reservation, yes, that should be enough time.

I will be arriving at terminal C of EWR the 15th of August at 5:20 AM on connection flight destination Madrid which leaves at 8:05 PM from the same terminal. Because I have a long layover, I wanted to visit Manhattan. Is there anywhere I could leave my carry on bags at the airport for the day? I'm flying United. Thanks!

There is a poorly advertised service in Terminal 3 called NBS, don't leave any valuables with them - http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g46671-i866-k660580-o70-Luggage_storage_at_Newark_Airport-Newark_New_Jersey.html

Sorry, meant to say Terminal C.

UK Citizens do not have to have a Visa to enter or transit the United States. You do have to complete ESTA though.

I will be travelling from Ottawa to London via Newark Liberty Airport. There is 2 hr wait at Newark. Is this sufficient time for me to catch my flight to London?

Yes, that should be enough time if both of your tickets were purchased together and are on United. You will pre-clear US Immigration in Ottawa. You may arrive in Terminal A in Newark. You will depart from Terminal C. A and C are connected inside security by a shuttle bus.

Awesome! Thanks and yes, the flights will be on the same ticket.

Hi, I am flying from Mumbai - EWR - Phoenix and have layover of approximately 9 hours at EWR. Fligt details are Air india (mumbai- EWR) and United (EWR-Phoenix). As a student, I will be carrying extra luggage and would like to know if luggage facility is available at EWR or can I check in my baggage early? Please let me know. Thanks, Sid

There is no luggage storage facility in Newark, but yes the United check-in counters are open almost all day so you can check your baggage with United whenever you want.

Hey, Thanks a lot for your reply. It's just that my flight will arrive at 8 am and connecting flight is at 6 pm on same day so can i check in that much early?

Yeah, at a big airport that is a United hub that isn't really an issue.

I'm travelling from HongKong to Newark (arrive 2pm) and from Newark to Quito (departing 3:55pm) on a Saturday. Does anyone know if this is sufficient time to clear immigration/security/recheck bags? Thanks!

forgot to add 1) i'm not a US citizen 2) the flights are 2 separate United tickets and 3) the flights are in terminals B and C. thanks!

The Hong Kong flights usually arrive in Terminal C. That should be enough time. If you show your Quito confirmation to the United Agent in Hong Kong they can probably tag your bags through to Quito. Then you can re-check your bags at the transfer desk right after customs in Newark instead of having to bring them to the check-in desk.

  • Frankfurt to Cincinnati through Newark

I am flying on United from Frankfurt to CVG on Apr 12, connecting thru Newark. Frankfurt flight lands at 2:20 pm. CVG leaves at 3:55. I know this is cutting it close. Any ideas on how I can increase my odds for making this connection?

Try to sit as far forward on your flight to Newark as possible so you can get off quicker and run. You should have enough time.

Hi, we are flying with United Airlines from Oslo to Lax, with a layover of 90 minutes at EWR. Is it enough time? If missing the connection, would rebooking be possible? Thanks inadvance for your help.

Yes, that is right on the minimum amount of allowed time for that connection, so it is possible. If you do miss your connection you will be rebooked free of charge on the next available flight to LAX. United flies many flights from EWR to LAX.

  • Quiet areas

I am looking for some quiet areas in Newark, in any of the terminals, to use during my layover. I get anxious around a lot of people, so I like having places to destress in. I know B has a little, dark artsy movie theater, I used that the one time we traveled through EWR. I've heard C has a Meditation Room? Has anyone been in it? Anything else that I might find useful for my layover of almost 3 hours? Thanks!!

  • Long layover Hotel

I am flying into Newark from Israel on 2/12/15 at 0430 and out to LAX at 1930. Is there a hotel I can stay for a few hours?

There are lots of hotels near Newark but I don't know how many you could check in at 6 AM. You might want to get a list of nearby ones (Wyndham, Marriott) and then call them when you arrive to see if any of them have any rooms available for immediate check in. You could also spend the day in the United Club. They sell day passes and the one near Gate C120 has shower facilities.

i'am flying into terminal c from Dublin with a 6 hour lay over is it ok to leave the terminal to visit some friend's locally

Yes, you will have already cleared US Immigration and there's nobody guarding the doors to the airport. You'll have to go through security again when you come back.
