Hi, my daughter will be traveling from YYZ to EWR in Air Canada and from EWR to BOM in Air India, bought as one ticket. Will she have to exit security and bring her luggage onto the AirTrain from Terminal A to Terminal B and recheck it at Air Canada, or is there a more "internal" easy way to transfer from Air Canada to Air India? (Her layover is 2 hours. While Returning she is traveling from BOM - DEL, DEL - JFK, JFK - YYZ. How complicated this travel will be? Any suggestion will be appreciated. Thanks!

There is no more "Internal" way to transfer to Air canada. However, if both her tickets were purchased on the same reservation then her bags can be checked through to India and she won't have to claim and transfer them in Newark.

Hi, my daughter will be arriving at EWR from Heathrow via United (ticketed thru Lufthansa), then flying EWR to LAX via Virgin America. Will she have to exit security and bring her luggage onto the AirTrain to Terminal A to recheck it at Virgin, or is there a more "internal" way to transfer from United to Virgin? (Her layover is 4 hours so time shouldn't be an issue if all goes well.) Thanks!

Yes, since she is on two separate tickets she will have to bring her bags with her on the AirTrain and re-check them with Virgin America after clearing US Immigration and Customs.

    Thanks!

Hello, I bought TWO separate tickets. one for YYZ-EWR (Air Canada) and one form EWR-PTY (United) with 1hour 20 mins between those two flights. Both arrival and departure is in Terminal C I am aware that I pre-clear for US Imm and Custom in YYZ. Still have a few questions. 1. Will Air Canada be able to check my baggage to the final destination when tickets are bought seperately? So I do not have to pick up the bag at EWR. 2. If 1 is not possible. Is the below steps correct? arrive > no custom, straight to pick up luggage> go through security again> board next flight. 3. from what I can gather, if all goes smoothly, 1 hour 20 mins should be sufficient?? Thank you,

YYZ-EWR flights operated by Air Canada arrive in Terminal A, as do most United YYZ-EWR flights. You can ask the Air Canada agent to check your bags through to PTY by showing your United confirmation, but they are not obligated to. If everything goes smoothly and your baggage is not checked through to PTY you will have a very hard time getting your bags to the United counter in Terminal C on-time before the baggage check cutoff.

Thanks for the reply.. My flight is AC4822 and it shows terminal C. so hopefully it arrives in terminal C as shown on the ticket, will save me some time. Do I have to go through security again to fly out of EWR? with or without checked baggage? or do I just come out and go straight to the departure gate (if no check baggage, and assuming both arrival and dep are in terminal C)

AC4822 is actually United Express flight 3498. It usually arrives in Terminal A. If you get your bags tagged through to PTY then you can take a shuttle bus to Terminal C and you won't have to go through security in EWR. If you have to claim and transfer your bags yourself then you will have to go through security in EWR. The fact that both of your flights are United flights means you will check in at the United counter in Toronto and they should definitely be able to join your two bookings and tag the bags through to PTY.

Hi, US teen traveling alone on Sunday July 5, 2015 from Geneva Switzerland to Newark, change to domestic flight to Chicago all on United with 1hr 19 min between flights, Trying to figure out if that's enoughme. 1) He has checked bags. Does he have to pick up bags and take them thru customs and recheck or can she check them all the way thru to final destination ATL on United? Many thanks!

Yes, in Newark he will have to go through US Immigration, claim his bags, go through US customs, and re-check his bags at the transfer desk immediately after, then go to Terminal C if he arrived in Terminal B on the airtrain, then go through security. 1 hr 19 mins is 11 minutes shorter than the official minimum connection time and about 40 minutes shorter than what I recommend. You can contact United or the travel agent to ask to be rebooked on a later flight to Chicago or a direct flight from Newark to Atlanta (you mention the final destination is ATL?)

Thank you. I shall contact UA since UA made this re-booking shortening the transfer time.

My flight arrives at gate c127 and connection departs after 3 hours from c123 at ewr.I am flying United both flights I arrive to gate c127 from outside the US and depart from gate c123 to outside the US . Do i need a US visa and will I need to pass through Immi and Customs at ewr

Yes, you will go through US Immigration and Customs in Newark, as well as claim your bags. Whether or not you need a visa depends on your citizenship - what is your citizenship? Where are you going on the second flight?

Hi, US teen traveling alone from Switzerland - Newark, change to domestic flight to San Fran all on United with 1hr 52 min between flights, 2 days before July 4.I assume this is super busy travel time. Trying to figure out if that's enuf time. 1) She has checked bags. Does she have to pick up bags and take them thru customs and recheck or can she check them all the way thru to SFO on United? Do you recommend using the kiosks? 2) Bags have to checked 45 min before departure, leaves her 1hr+ to get thru customs and recheck bags.Is that enough? Then security... 3) how long does it take to go thru security? Many thanks!

Actually that's not a super busy travel time. Many people stay home on the 4th of July. Her bags will be tagged through to SFO in Switzerland. She will arrive in Terminal B or C in Newark, go through US Immigration, claim her bags, and go through US Customs, then re-check her bags at the re-check desk immediately after customs. Then, if she arrived in Terminal B, she will take the AirTrain to Terminal C. Otherwise she will just go through security and to her departure gate in Terminal C. There are no bag check "cutoffs" for bags that are already tagged through to their final destination. She should have enough time.

thank you for the peace of mind!

  • EWR to SJO arriveing from Canada with 1 hour layover

Hello I only have a 1 hour layover in Newark before departing for Costa Rica. My flight originates from Canada. Will I be able to make my connection? Will I have to clear customs and pick up my luggage and re-check it or witll my luggage be sent to my destination. Any help is appreciated

Where in Canada are you coming from? Were both tickets bought together on the same reservation?

Coming from Montreal and all tickets were purchased together

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Montreal. All you have to do in Newark is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You will probably arrive in Terminal A and depart from Terminal C. United runs a shuttle bus inside security between the terminals. You should have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

I have 2 set of tickets one on United and one on TAP airlines, will need to pickup my bags at UA baggage claim, then to checkin at TAP airlines, when I arrive at Terminal C, how long does it take to walk from Terminal C, baggage claim to Terminal B International checkin counters?

You can show your TAP confirmation to the United agent in your origin city and they may check your bags through to TAP for you. Otherwise you will have to claim them from United and take them to Terminal B on the airtrain. It shouldn't take more than 15 minutes from when you get your bags to get to Terminal B.

How do you catch the airtrain once you've claimed your luggage? and is walking to from Terminal C to B not advisable? I have 3 hours between flights, and if I choose to walk, how long will it take?

It's a bit of a difficult walk. I would take the train. There will be lots of signs to the airtrain in the baggage claim.

Hi, I have never had to find my way around an airport and am flying from buffalo Niagara to Newark Liberty than to Lisbon Portugal. Please help, when will I go thru customs in NJ or once I land in Portugal? My flights are all thru United so can my bags remain checked through out the trip. The plane from Buffalo is thru United express/ republic both to and from Newark. Will these bags have to be reclaimed and rechecked at Newark airport. Is there any way (I am 61 years old) that I can get help at Newark airport getting me to the correct terminal and gate. Is wheel chairs assistance for handicapped only? Do you have any idea which terminals I will use flying into from buffalo at Newark and out of to Lisbon and then visa a versa? Please advise!

You do not go through US Customs when leaving the US. You will go through Schengen passport control when you get to Portugal. You do not have to do anything with your bags in Newark on the way to Portugal. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. On your way to Lisbon you will arrive in terminal A or C, and depart from Terminal C. There is a shuttle bus inside security between A and C. You can ask any United employee for help if you have trouble finding it. On the way back from Lisbon, you will arrive in Terminal B or C, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, and re-check your bags at the transfer desk immediately after. Your flight to Buffalo will depart from Terminal A or C. If you need to change terminals you can take the AirTrain to either A or C. Then you will go through security and to your departure gate to Buffalo.

Hi, We land from TLV in Terminal B at 5:40 a.m. and have a flight by Porter to YTZ at 8:40. do we have to go through immigration and collect our luggage? or is there a short way to go to hour 2nd flight to Canada?

Yes, if you are on El Al you will arrive in Terminal B, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then if your bags are tagged through to YTZ you can drop them at the re-check desk. Otherwise you will have to go up to the departure level and check them with Porter, get your Porter boarding pass, and go through security and to your gate. You should have enough time.

thank you. Hiw do i get my bags tagged to YTZ? Is it done at TLV?

If you purchased your tickets on one reservation and El Al and Porter have an interline agreement they can be tagged to YTZ. Otherwise you will definitely have to bring them to the Porter Check-In desk in Newark.

Hello. On a monday of early April 2016, I'd be flying in EWR from CVG, landing at Terminal A at 15:43 on a RJ of United, and connecting for an international flight to Copenhagen leaving at 17:40 from Terminal B (let's say 2 hours later). This flight would be operated by SAS, and both flights would be on the same ticket bought via SAS. My question is about wether or not I'd have to collect luggage to go through security and, the usual "will I have enough time" (what is the mean time one could expect for transfering between A to B if everything goes smooth, so I can have an idea of how much late my first flight could be, although I understand it depends on a lot of factors). Thanx a lot.

No, you do not have to collect luggage. All you have to do is take the AirTrain From Terminal A to Terminal B and go through security. Your first flight could be up to an hour late and I think you'd be OK. You can also take an airside shuttle bus from C to B, and this would mean you wouldn't have to go through security, but the bus runs less often and the security lines in B aren't usually very long.

I purchased separate tickets. I fly southwest from denver to EWR. I reach EWR terminal A. And then i have to take Cathay pacific from Terminal B. I have 2 hours and 30 min between my flights. Is this time enough for me to change the terminals ? I will have to claim the luggage and then again take it to the other terminal. Should i take the airtran or the bus shuttle to go to the other terminal ? Any information will be appreciated.

You have to take the AirTrain. That should be enough time if your Southwest flight is on-time.

We are flying from TLV to EWR and then to CLT. We have 1hr 52 min between flights from EWR to CLT. Will that be enough time to go through customs and get on the next flight? Will we have to go back through security or our we OK since we are still in the terminal? i believe we will be coming in to terminal C and leaving terminal A. Thanks so much for any advice/assistance...

You will arrive in Terminal C, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, and re-check your bags at the re-check desk. At that point you will be outside security. If your flight leaves from Terminal A, you can take the AirTrain there and then go through security.

Hi, I have a flight Birmingham (UK) to Newark with United Airlines that lands at 12:05. I have then got a flight from Newark to Dallas at 15:15 with American Airlines. Will I have enough time to collect my bags and check in for the second flight? Which terminals will I land/take-off from? Thanks

That is plenty of time. Yes, you will arrive in Terminal B or C, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk immediately after. Then check the monitors or united.com as your flight to Dallas could leave from Terminal A or C. Take the AirTrain if you need to change terminals, then go through security and to your departure gate.

my daughter is travelling alone for the first time on 16th June travelling on United from London LHR to Newark EWR and then on to Portland, Maine PWM. Will she need to claim and re-check in her baggage?

Yes, in Newark she will arrive in Terminal B or C, go through US Immigration, claim her bags, go through US Customs, re-check her bags at the re-check desk. Then she needs to see where her PWM flight will depart. It could depart from Terminal A or C. She then needs to take the AirTrain to her departure terminal *unless both flights are in C) and go through security and to her departure gate.

thanks so much for your helpful advice

Is your daughter by any chance flying this morning (the 16th) on the 10:35 flight? My 15 year old daughter is also on that flight and continuing on to Philadelphia. Do you think they could try to connect and go through this together? you can contact me directly at jodie.asaraf@ymca.org.il if you want to try to do this.

Sorry Jodie not to have seen your message before now. My daughter is travelling on the previous flight so won't be able to help. Hope it all goes smoothly.
