Hi- flying from newcastle UK to sacramento all on united , when I land at Newark and go through immigration will I have to pick up my cases or will they go direct on to the next flight because it is the same carrier ( united) , also is 2 hours long enough to go through immigration and get to my departure terminal

Yes, in Newark you will arrive in Terminal B or C, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then you can re-check your bags at the transfer desk. Your next flight will depart from Terminal A or C. If you arrived at Terminal B you will have to take the AirTrain to your departure terminal. Then you will go through security and to your departure gate. You should have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

  • Baggage Claim

Hi I booked my flight from NASHVILLE -> EWR - United airline and then NEWARK -.> MUMBAI - Air India. So I have to claim my Baggage, is it?

Did you purchase it as one ticket or separate tickets? If separate yes, you will have to claim your bags from United and bring them to Air India.

Hi I know that I can travel to A using AIRTRAIN but give me some specific train number or any sign that I can understand this is my train means LAST STATION or ANY NUMBER?

Its from T-B to T-A and also for T-A to T-B.

The AirTrain is a very simple train. It just goes from a larger train station and parking area to the three terminals. There are no train numbers. In the station there will be a sign showing which side of the platform to board on to get to Terminal A.

Hi I booked my ticket to nashville from mumbai with Newark stop of 5 hrs. So I need to check in my hand luggage to UNITED counter and make my boarding card OR directly go to SECURITY?

After you clear customs there will be a transfer desk right there. Assuming your bags are tagged to BNA, you can re-check your bags there. You do not have to take them up to the departure level or to any other terminal with you.

  • do i have to leave security between terminals a and b?

I've got a connection at Newark where I fly into terminal A and leave for my connecting flight through terminal B. Do I need to leave security to get from one terminal to another or can I get to the other terminal within security?

United has a shuttle bus from the United Express pier of Terminal A to Terminal B. Otherwise you will have to take the AirTrain and go through security in B.

Hi, I am trying to book a flight from Jacksonville to Quebec City in June. The only flight I am finding that arrives early in the day has a 48 minute layover in Newark. Is this possible? It seems a little short to me, but I'm really hoping to arrive in Quebec City early in the day. Both flights are with United on June 21st. Leaving Jacksonville at 6 am and arriving at 8:12 a.m. and then leaving Newark at 9:00 a.m. and arriving in Quebec at 10:34 a.m. Would I have to collect and re-check my bags or will they be automatically moved? Would it be better to try to find a longer layover even if it means arriving at night or paying more?

Your bags will be automatically moved. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. However, they may end up being in different terminals. However, United has a shuttle bus that runs inside security between their terminals. It's certainly a possible connection but does bear some level of risk.

We are a Norwegian family traveling on United from Oslo via Heathrow and Newark to Toronto Pearson. We have almsot 90 minutes between the flight from Haethrow landing in terminal B (20:30) and the flight to Toronto leaving from terminal C (21:57). Do we have enough time? Should we have checked inn luggage or should we only take handbags not to waste time? What do we have to do in Newark and how long does it usually take? This will be on thursady evening! Thank you

Upon arrival in Terminal B or C (United international flights can arrive at either), You will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk. Then check the monitors, your flight to Toronto will actually likely depart from Terminal A, but may depart from Terminal C. If you arrived in a different terminal than you are departing from, take the AirTrain to your departing terminal, go through security, and to your gate. You should barely have enough time if your first flight is on-time. If you miss your connection you will likely have to spend the night in New York since the 21:57 flight is likely the last flight to Toronto. Only having hand luggage will save you time.

Thank you very much ZAP, we really appreciate your help!

  • Toronto -> Newark -> San Jose, Costa Rica

I'm travelling from Toronto via Newark to Costa Rica, both legs on United, but with only 45 minutes to make the connection in Newark. I assume that I'll clear US customs in Toronto and am planning to take carry-on only, so that I don't have to claim and re-check my bags, but is this still cutting it too close?

The issue is that you may arrive in Terminal A on your flight from Toronto. This requires you to take a shuttle bus to Terminal C for your flight to San Jose. The shuttle runs inside security but you will have to hope it comes quickly and run once you get to terminal C in order to make your flight.

Other posts have covered our outbound flight to US. But our return flight from Orlando to UK is causing me some concern. I'm flying with my wife and a 4 nad 6 year old. Orlando to Newark with a 1hr 42min layover then an international flight to Brussels. The internal flight is United and the intl one is Brussels airlines operated by United. Tickets were bought as one through Expedia. Does anyone know the baggage process at Newark. Can we check them straight through from Orlando? And do we have enough time to transfer. (Sorry for the long post.) Help much appreciated.

On the way to Brussels you don't have to do anything with your baggage in Newark. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate which will both be in Terminal C.

    Thanks for your help Zap.

  • Transfer bus

On my last trip through EWR, we took the transfer bus from A to B, and the attendant told us we could take the bus to C for a while if we wanted to as they have better shops and restaurants. We did not do that, but now on our upcoming trip we will be landing in A and transferring to C. My question is: going from A, can we make a stop in B for a while, then take the transfer bus to C later in our layover? Does the bus go from B to C??? Thank you!!!!

The green dotted line is the bus route - https://www.united.com/web/en-us/content/travel/airport/maps/ewr.aspx

we are flying on United. we fly from Cleveland to EWR have a 1 1/2 hour layover change planes then fly to Miami. Are United's gates all in the same area? Are we going to have a hard time finding our connecting gate? Do we go thru security again?

Your flight from Cleveland may arrive in Terminal A or C and your flight to Miami will depart from Terminal C. If you arrive in A there is a shuttle bus inside security between A and C. You will not have to go through security in Newark. You will have plenty of time if your first flight is on-time.

It will be a long day from mo to london ,how can I make my transfer from southwest to united easy?We will be bringing 3bgs and 2 carry ons? thanks

You will need at least 3 hours for your transfer. You need to claim your bags from Southwest in Terminal A, then take them on the airtrain to Terminal C to check with United.

  • Transferring in Newark, baggage claim?

Hi, i will be arriving at Newark from Oslo, Norway and have to transfer to terminal B i think for my connecting flight to San Fransisco, therefore im really unsure on wether i have to claim and then re check-in my luggage and pass trough security again in the new terminal, or if i just go directly to the terminal? And do i take a bus or a train or what? Grateful for any answers!

What airlines are you flying? Did you purchase both flights together or separately? Yes, you will have to claim your baggage to go through US Customs.

I'm flying scandinavian arilines (SAS) to Newark and United from there, the whole trip was bought together at SAS own website, Thanks for answer about the luggage, nobody i talked to knew for sure.

You will arrive in Terminal B, go through US Immigration, claim your luggage, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then take the AirTrain from Terminal B to Terminal C, then go through security and to your departure gate.

I'm travelling from Cancun to Zuerich transferring in Newark. Is 2hrs5mins enough to catch my connecting flight to Z├╝rich. At which terminal would I arrive and at which terminal would I have to take the connecting flight? I'm flying with United (both flights). Will I have to go pick up the luggage and go through customs? Thanks!

You will arrive in Terminal B or C, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then if you arrived at Terminal B, take the airtrain to Terminal C. Then go through security and to your departure gate. You should have enough time but not much to spare in case of delays.

Thanks! For sure no need to claim bags even when transferring to an international (vs domestic) flight? Trini-Canadian friends thought we'd still need to recheck bags, so time tight & better change flight tho penalty. Zap, you're familiar with such flights or work there? really appreciate the help!

oops, i meant this as reply to Zap's reply to me below! sorry for misplaced post.

  • 2.5 hour United transfer from Toronto to Trinidad, baggage & terminal?
    Jan 7, 2015

Since our bags pre-cleared at Toronto airport customs & immigration, will we still need to reclaim & recheck baggage at Newark? Jan30, what terminal will UA 4528 from Toronto land at, & different terminal for UA1505 to Port of Spain? Is only 2hr 21min for the transfer rather risky? or since departure is 5min to midnight, will airport be less crowded? Thanks!

You will not have to do anything with your baggage in Newark. You will likely arrive in Terminal A and depart from Terminal C. United runs a shuttle bus inside security between the two terminals. You should have plenty of time.

PS Should I still try calling United at Newark to confirm? (in Asia now) so really appreciate the help!

You need to claim bags on the Trinidad->US->canada leg, but not on the way to Trinidad since you will pre-clear US Customs in Toronto. There's no need to call United.
