  • Connection times for Memphis
    Nov 7, 2014

I am flying from London Heathrow to Memphis via Newark. I booked with United Airlines via an agent. I have 1 hour 45 minutes. The Agent says my suitcase is checked-in through to Memphis. My family says different and that 1 hour 45 minutes is nowhere near enough to collect my bag, do customs/immigration/passport control, re check-in my bag, go through security, change terminals. I fear they may be right but need more info before going back to the airline/agent. Any help appreciated.

Your travel agent is wrong, however, 1 hr 45 minutes may be enough time but is definitely pushing it. You will arrive in Terminal B or C, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then you will take the Airtrain to your departure terminal, likely Terminal A, and go through security.

I am leaving toronto airport on 12th of nov by air canada and taking a connecting flight to zurich by swiss air. the time between the flights is 96 mins. is it enough to board the next flight? also do i have to recheck my baggage at newark airport? i am too stressed out as i am travelling with my 4 yr old son. thanks in advance

You will pre-clear US Immigration in Toronto. If you purchased a single reservation you will not have to do anything with your bags in Newark. You will, however, have to exit Terminal A where you will arrive and take the AirTrain to Terminal B and go through security.

  • enough time for connection?

i'm flying in from denver to newark and connecting in a different terminal to fly to copenhagen. are my bags checked all the way through or do i have to collect them and recheck for the international flight. i have 1 1/2 hrs or 3 hours for the connection, depending on which flight i suggest. is an 1 1/2 hrs enough time and what about the baggage?

If you did not book both flights on one ticket, or used 2 airlines which do not belong to the same Alliance, or do not code-share - you would need to pick up your bags & re-check them in with the second airline. You may also have to transfer to another terminal, depending on the airlines you take, which necessitates taking the Airtrain & going through security check again. Open www.ifly.com/ewr, click on 'Terminal Map' under QUICK LINKS, & scroll down to the detailed text for more info.

If you are buying the tickets together on United and SAS you won't have to do anything with your bags in Newark on your way to Copenhagen.

Can you tell me how long the airtrain takes to get from terminal b to terminal c. We have 3 hours and not brisk walkers. I am not sure if the bags are checked right through. Thanks for any info. I think this will be very stressful

You have plenty of time and should not stress about your upcoming trip: On arrival at TB you will need to go through passport check, pick up your bags, and go through customs clearance. If you purchased your trip on one ticket, or your second airline belongs to the same Alliance (like 'Star Alliance') or has a code-share with the first one, your bags will automatically be transferred - (if not, you would need to take your bags along to TC & check them in there. The Airtrain makes continuous runs between the 3 terminals & takes only minutes; however, on arrival at TC you need to go through security check before proceeding to your gate. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/ewr, click on 'Terminal Map' under QUICK LINKS, and scroll down to the detailed text.

  • From STL to EWR with United and from EWR to DUS with Lufthansa

I am flying from St.Louis to Newark with United Airlines (arriving in Terminal C) and then fly (from Terminal B) with Lufthansa from Newark to Dusseldorf. When I check in in St.Louis, will I get my boarding passes for the second flight with Lufthansa as well? The tickets were purchased at the same time, so I guess my luggage will be checked straight through to Dusseldorf, so, with 2 hours 33 minutes at EWR, I have enough time to get from Terminal C to Terminal B?

Yes, your bags will be checked through to DUS and you will get both boarding passes in STL. Note that you may arrive in Terminal A at EWR. You should have plenty of time.

Excellent! Thank you very much! If I arrive in Terminal A instead of C, getting to terminal B is basically the same, right? Taking the train and then going through security again in Terminal B?

Yes, the procedure would be similar.

  • flying United from Houston to Newark to Delhi

My mom will be flying from Houston to Newark and then connecting to New Delhi. She has 3 hr connection time. She will also have wheel chair assistance. I am worried that 3 hrs will not be enough - i just don't know. Will she be able to check luggage in Houston all the way Delhi or will she have to collect luggage in Newark and recheck. She is 83 and traveling by herself.

3 hours is a TON of time. She will not have to collect her luggage in Newark. She will be fine.

I am arriving from MEM on UA into TA and connecting to LHR on VS from TB and only have 90 minutes to connect. Will that suffice?

Did you purchase one ticket or separate tickets? Will you have checked baggage? With one ticket you should have plenty of time, as all you have to do is take the AirTrain between terminals, get your boarding pass, and go through securrity. With separate tickets and checked baggage it may be difficult getting to TB in time to re-check your baggage with VS.

Its separate tickets and yes, I will have checked baggage. I guess it will be safer if I get an earlier flight. Thank you :)

My flight arrives on Terminal A Gate 26, & My connecting flight departs from Terminal C, Gate 108, & I am having 1 hour duration for transit, what is the quickest path I can approach, shall I take a shuttle or air train.

By taking the United shuttle bus you avoid having to go through security again. So do that.

I am arriving from Ottawa in Terminal C and have to board my connecting flight to SFO in Terminal C. I believe I will clear customs in Ottawa. My connecting time is 44 min. Will I have to collect my bags and is this enough time?

Yes, you will pre-clear US Immigration and customs in Ottawa. Also there is a good chance your Ottawa flight will arrive in Terminal A. If so you will have to take the United shuttle bus to Terminal C for your flight to SFO. You will not have to take your baggage. If you arrive in A it will be tough to make your connection, but possible. If you miss your connection it's not a huge problem as United has many EWR-SFO flights.

Thanks! My ticket says that we arrive and depart from terminal C - fingers crossed!

That information is commonly wrong, don't be surprised if you arrive in Terminal A.

  • Connection 80 minutes from BRU - EWR - MCO

Hey ! I will arrive @ EWR on Monday 12.20 PM with United Airlines from Brussels I will need to catch my transit flight to MCO @ 1.40 PM . Which gives me 80 Minutes - reading the above comments worries me that won't make my connection flight .

Yes, that is below the minimum International->Domestic connection time at EWR by 10 minutes. You can contact who you booked the ticket through, notify them of that, and ask to be rebooked on a later flight to Orlando, or you can try it, it's certainly possible, and if you miss it you will be rebooked on the next flight to Orlando. United has many Newark-Orlando flights.

Thanks a lot - I recently had a bad experience at Dulles . Customs took me 2 hours and 45 minutes

  • Is 2 hours enought time EWR to MCO?

We're arriving from Glasgow, Scotland into EWR on Icelandair flight (Terminal B?) at 19.00 - then out to MCO with United at 21.00. Will the 2 hours be enough time to make the connection?

On arrival at Terminal B of EWR, you need to go through passport check, retrieve checked bags, go through customs clearance and - if transferring to another flight - re-check-in bags. NOTE: While Iceland will Arrive at Terminal B (TB), United uses TC for its departures (check-in levels 2 & 3), while United Express uses both TA & TC for its departures. If you bought separate tickets find out if Iceland will transfer your bags to your United flight - if not, you need, after Customs clearance, pick up your bag & check it in which United or United Express. If you need to transfer from TB to TC, you need to take the AirTrain (follow signs), but will have to go through security check at TC before proceeding to connecting gate. 2 hrs. transfer time should be enough. Be warned - TSA arrivals process can be trying at EWR (rude personnel there) - keep you cool!

Thanks for such a comprehensive and informative reply, Susep14. I'll contact Iceland first thing in the morning to find out if they would transfer our bags to our United flight - I had no idea that there was even the possibility of such an arrangement between airlines. Do you know if there is any way I can establish which terminal the onward flight will be leaving from, other than phoning UA? Thanks again.

Your flight to Orlando will leave from Terminal C. Even if you can get your bags tagged through to Orlando you will still have to claim them to go through US Customs.

Thanks Zap. If I can't get the baggage tagged through to MCO, should I be able to get through passport check on arrival at TB, retrieve checked bags, go through customs clearance, re-check-in bags and get to the boarding gate in TC in under 2 hours ? It sounds like a lengthy procedure.

It's doable but it will be tough.

  • Making a connecting flight within terminal C

Please help! I'm beginning to worry about the time it will take to to make my connecting flight. I arrive from BHX into EWR 11.55 on a United Airlines flight landing in Terminal C. My connecting flight leaves EWR from Terminal C at 13.29. It has been sold to me as a legal connection.... will I get through all the checks in time? Also what is the procedure that I need to go through? Is everything signposted? Will I have time to ask for help if I need it? I could really do with a to do list with locations and approx timings!!! Thanks.

Yes, that is a legal connection. The first part is very simple. You will arrive and be funneled towards US Immigration, then you will claim your baggage then go through US Customs, then re-check your baggage. Then you will go up to the departure level and through security and to your departure gate.

  • International Arrival @ EWR to BNA: 75 minutes?
    Sep 27, 2014

United just changed my Dec. 18 connecting flight to Nashville to an earlier time, making what had been an almost 3 hour layover an hour and 15 minutes. We are coming in from Germany. I called and they assured that 1 hour is the minimum to get through customs and take care of luggage. I am not so hopeful and do not want to spend the night at their airport. I'd rather be with my family, much further South. Any thoughts or recommendations?

#2 under "getting around on the terminal map page tells international arrivals "To get to your connecting flight, take the Airtrain which serves all pre-security areas of all terminals." (http://www.ifly.com/newark-liberty-international/terminal-map) Pre-security? Does that mean we would have to go through security again? That's going to take some time.

Upon arrival at Terminal B or C, you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, and re-check your bags with United. Then if you arrived in a terminal different from your departure terminal, you will take the airtrain to your departure terminal, then you will go through security. Your flight to Nashville will likely depart from Terminal A. 75 minutes is not enough for your transfer and the agent who told you that is flat out wrong. Call again and demand to be rebooked over a different hub, such as Chicago or Washington DC.

Thank you. That's exactly what I thought, too.

  • What to do in case of delay?
    Sep 25, 2014

Connecting time of 55 minutes (from Boston to Amsterdam, both United) seems to be ok if there is no delay. But what to do in case the inbound-flight is delayed? Yesterday the inbound-flight arrived at the scheduled departure-time of the outbound-flight. Is there a transfer-desk for these situations?

Yes, there is a service desk for missed connections. You will likely be rebooked to Amsterdam through another European gateway, such as London or Frankfurt, which has a later flight leaving Newark. Otherwise you may be rebooked on the next day's Amsterdam flight.

Connecting time 55 minutes from Texas to Hong Kong. United all the way. Is this enough?

Yes, that should be enough time. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate.
