  • Connecting flight in EWR need luggages pick-up/recheck in 1hr50min?
    Jul 13, 2015
Hi, I am flying United from ORD to EWR and have a connecting flight to international destination in 1 hour and 50 min. I might have up to 3 luggages and a carry on. Will I have to pick up and recheck in EWR and will I run short on the time? Maybe I will have to smile and be very polite and ask folks to let me through if need to go through security? Thank you!!

No, you will not have to pick up your bags in EWR. There is no US Customs when exiting the US. You will not have to go through security either. You just have to go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You should have plenty of time.

Thank you very much, I appreciate it!

  • Amsterdam to Newark to Tampa
    Jul 10, 2015
I'm a US citizen living in Amsterdam, Netherlands. I will be traveling with United out of Schiphol to Newark, arrival time 11:55 and taking a connecting flight from Newark to Tampa, departure time 13:25. I've never done a connector before. Will I need to pick up my checked baggage and come through security again? Will I need to go through some form of passport control? Is this enough time between flights to make this happen? Basically, how will this work for me? Your responses are greatly appreciated!

Yes, in Newark you will arrive in Terminal B or C, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the re-check desk immediately after. Then if you arrived in Terminal B, you will have to take the airtrain to Terminal C. Then you will go through security and to your departure gate. Your connection time is barely long enough given everything goes smoothly.

  • Domestic Connection, EWR to Indianapolis
    Jul 10, 2015
I have 52 minutes this evening to make a connection, not sure what gates yet. Does 52 minutes seem reasonable to make a domestic connection at EWR, even if I have to change terminals?

If both are in Terminal C or Terminal A it will be pretty easy if the first flight is on-time. If you have to go between A and C it's a bit more difficult, but United runs a shuttle inside security and it is doable if the first flight is on-time.

  • Access to Terminals
    Jul 11, 2015
I am arriving at Terminal B and have a five hour layover before my onward connection from Terminal C. I would very much like to utilise one of the Star Alliance lounges in B, but I have read somewhere that you are not allowed into B when your (next) departure is from C. I always though you were allowed to any terminal at a given airport with a valid ticket, but are there different rules at EWR?

The United Clubs in C are plenty good. I don't know why you'd want to use the clubs in B instead.

The food selection in the United clubs is pretty scarce (snacks only), while the Lufthansa lounge in B offers pretty much a full meal (and free drinks). So I'd much rather use this lounge, but the question if it is at all possible to access terminal B when departing from C.

hi, im flying Shannon to Orlando with a stopover in Newark of 1 hour 15 mins, will i have enough time to get to the gate of the my flight to Orlando

Yes, that should be enough time. Since you will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Shannon, all you have to do in Newark is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, both in Terminal C.

    thank you

Hi, I'm travelling Newark to Chicago from Birmingham UK.. I have a stop in Newark before Chicago departure & it is 1hr 35 mins.. will I have enough time to check in & bags etc? I'm determined I will miss my flight! v worried!! Thanks.

Hello! I am a first-time flyer travelling from Ottawa, Ontario (YOW) to Providence, R.I. (PVD) via United. I have booked a flight with a 53 minute layover in Newark, but, having done some digging, I'm seriously doubting if I'll have time to make my connection. I will have cleared customs in Canada, and will only have carry-on baggage. I will fly in to Terminal A at 7:24am on a Monday, but leave from Terminal C at 8:17am. As I mentioned, both flights are with United, but the trip was booked with Expedia. I am wondering a) if I will have time to make my connection and b) if I am switching terminals, do I have to re-clear security in Terminal C? Any thoughts or information on this connection would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Annie

United has a shuttle bus from Terminal A to Terminal C that runs inside security. As long as your flight from Ottawa is on-time or close to it you should have enough time.

  • Arlanda SE Newark 12:55 Terminal B to C 15:29 enough time
    Jul 7, 2015
Hi, Is it enough time to get from terminal B arriving from Sweden to go through all check points to catch a flight in C to Tampa at 15:29. Hopefully I will have my bags checked all the way. YJ

Yes, that should be enough time. You will have to claim your bags in Newark to go through US Customs, but if they are tagged through to TPA you can re-check them at the re-check desk in Terminal B.

  • STL - EWR - LHR
    Jul 6, 2015
I'm considering buying a ticket through United that will take me from St. Louis to Newark (1hr 56min layover) and then to London Heathrow. I've noticed that there is a possibility of a terminal change at EWR. How does that work? I will have no checked bags. Is there an airside shuttle so I don't have to go through security again?

Yes, United does have an airside shuttle between their gates in Terminals A and C. You should have enough time for your transfer.

  • Traveling from LAS to YUL
    Jul 6, 2015
Hi, my sister is traveling from Las Vegas to Montreal (YUL) in United Airlines connecting in EWR (2hr in between) flight 5386 United A. She is traveling with a carry suitcase. What she has to do to connect? Thanks !!!

She will have to take the shuttle bus from Terminal C where she will arrive to Terminal A where she will depart. That's all she has to do. She has plenty of time.

Does she have to go to the check point again? I'm worried since she is 73 y.o. and is her first time traveling by herself ! Is it complicated to change terminal ? I really will appreciate if you can give more details about it! Thanks!

Hi, my daughter will be traveling from YYZ to EWR in Air Canada and from EWR to BOM in Air India, bought as one ticket. Will she have to exit security and bring her luggage onto the AirTrain from Terminal A to Terminal B and recheck it at Air Canada, or is there a more "internal" easy way to transfer from Air Canada to Air India? (Her layover is 2 hours. While Returning she is traveling from BOM - DEL, DEL - JFK, JFK - YYZ. How complicated this travel will be? Any suggestion will be appreciated. Thanks!

There is no more "Internal" way to transfer to Air canada. However, if both her tickets were purchased on the same reservation then her bags can be checked through to India and she won't have to claim and transfer them in Newark.

Thank you for the reply. Is it required for her to go through Security at Terminal B after she take air train from Terminal A to Terminal B. For return travel the checked in luggage will directly go to Toronto or she need to collect it at JFK and check in again.

Yes, she will have to go through security in Terminal B. On her return, yes, in JFK she will go through US Immigration, claim her bags, go through US Customs, then re-check her bags at the re-check desk, then take the AirTrain to Terminal 7 and go through security.

If I choose to pick her up from JFK and drive to Toronto, is there any measures she needs to take? Traveling first time by herself, I think all these things might be overwhelming for her.

No, if you decide to pick her up at JFK and drive then there's nothing extra she needs to do. She will be going through US Immigration and Customs anyway.

Thank You for all your inputs.

Hi, my daughter will be arriving at EWR from Heathrow via United (ticketed thru Lufthansa), then flying EWR to LAX via Virgin America. Will she have to exit security and bring her luggage onto the AirTrain to Terminal A to recheck it at Virgin, or is there a more "internal" way to transfer from United to Virgin? (Her layover is 4 hours so time shouldn't be an issue if all goes well.) Thanks!

Yes, since she is on two separate tickets she will have to bring her bags with her on the AirTrain and re-check them with Virgin America after clearing US Immigration and Customs.

Hello, I bought TWO separate tickets. one for YYZ-EWR (Air Canada) and one form EWR-PTY (United) with 1hour 20 mins between those two flights. Both arrival and departure is in Terminal C I am aware that I pre-clear for US Imm and Custom in YYZ. Still have a few questions. 1. Will Air Canada be able to check my baggage to the final destination when tickets are bought seperately? So I do not have to pick up the bag at EWR. 2. If 1 is not possible. Is the below steps correct? arrive > no custom, straight to pick up luggage> go through security again> board next flight. 3. from what I can gather, if all goes smoothly, 1 hour 20 mins should be sufficient?? Thank you,

YYZ-EWR flights operated by Air Canada arrive in Terminal A, as do most United YYZ-EWR flights. You can ask the Air Canada agent to check your bags through to PTY by showing your United confirmation, but they are not obligated to. If everything goes smoothly and your baggage is not checked through to PTY you will have a very hard time getting your bags to the United counter in Terminal C on-time before the baggage check cutoff.

Thanks for the reply.. My flight is AC4822 and it shows terminal C. so hopefully it arrives in terminal C as shown on the ticket, will save me some time. Do I have to go through security again to fly out of EWR? with or without checked baggage? or do I just come out and go straight to the departure gate (if no check baggage, and assuming both arrival and dep are in terminal C)

AC4822 is actually United Express flight 3498. It usually arrives in Terminal A. If you get your bags tagged through to PTY then you can take a shuttle bus to Terminal C and you won't have to go through security in EWR. If you have to claim and transfer your bags yourself then you will have to go through security in EWR. The fact that both of your flights are United flights means you will check in at the United counter in Toronto and they should definitely be able to join your two bookings and tag the bags through to PTY.

  • Transfer time
    Jun 28, 2015
Hi, US teen traveling alone on Sunday July 5, 2015 from Geneva Switzerland to Newark, change to domestic flight to Chicago all on United with 1hr 19 min between flights, Trying to figure out if that's enoughme. 1) He has checked bags. Does he have to pick up bags and take them thru customs and recheck or can she check them all the way thru to final destination ATL on United? Many thanks!

Yes, in Newark he will have to go through US Immigration, claim his bags, go through US customs, and re-check his bags at the transfer desk immediately after, then go to Terminal C if he arrived in Terminal B on the airtrain, then go through security. 1 hr 19 mins is 11 minutes shorter than the official minimum connection time and about 40 minutes shorter than what I recommend. You can contact United or the travel agent to ask to be rebooked on a later flight to Chicago or a direct flight from Newark to Atlanta (you mention the final destination is ATL?)

Thank you. I shall contact UA since UA made this re-booking shortening the transfer time.

  • Connecting via Same Terminal

My flight arrives at gate c127 and connection departs after 3 hours from c123 at ewr.I am flying United both flights I arrive to gate c127 from outside the US and depart from gate c123 to outside the US . Do i need a US visa and will I need to pass through Immi and Customs at ewr

Yes, you will go through US Immigration and Customs in Newark, as well as claim your bags. Whether or not you need a visa depends on your citizenship - what is your citizenship? Where are you going on the second flight?

Hi, US teen traveling alone from Switzerland - Newark, change to domestic flight to San Fran all on United with 1hr 52 min between flights, 2 days before July 4.I assume this is super busy travel time. Trying to figure out if that's enuf time. 1) She has checked bags. Does she have to pick up bags and take them thru customs and recheck or can she check them all the way thru to SFO on United? Do you recommend using the kiosks? 2) Bags have to checked 45 min before departure, leaves her 1hr+ to get thru customs and recheck bags.Is that enough? Then security... 3) how long does it take to go thru security? Many thanks!

Actually that's not a super busy travel time. Many people stay home on the 4th of July. Her bags will be tagged through to SFO in Switzerland. She will arrive in Terminal B or C in Newark, go through US Immigration, claim her bags, and go through US Customs, then re-check her bags at the re-check desk immediately after customs. Then, if she arrived in Terminal B, she will take the AirTrain to Terminal C. Otherwise she will just go through security and to her departure gate in Terminal C. There are no bag check "cutoffs" for bags that are already tagged through to their final destination. She should have enough time.

thank you for the peace of mind!
