Hello
I am travelling from Belfast Northern Ireland via Newark and onward to Toronto Ontario. Both flights with united. Do I have to collect my bags or will they be sent right through. Also will the us visa I applied for when leaving be accepted on my return or do I have to reapply?
Great informative site. Thank you
Yes, in Newark you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, possibly change terminals, then go through security and to your departure gate. If you have a multiple-entry visa then it will be accepted on the return.
Hi is 2 hours enough to transit arriving from the uk on united and then flying on to costa rica on united. wasn't sure if needed to clear customs etc?
Yes, that should be enough time. Yes, you will have to go through US Immigration, Customs, and Security but you don't have to claim and re-check your bags.
Hello, I will have a 1h 55m layover in EWR. I will arrive from Austin with United Airlines and then need to go to Terminal B, and check in for my flight with El-Al to Israel. Will I have enough time?
With checked bags it will be very difficult for you to make it to the El Al check in desk before the cutoff.
I see, and without checked bags it is reasonable?
Without checked bags it is barely possible if everything goes perfectly.
Hi All,
My family will be travelling from Mumbai to Newark and arrive at Terminal C. Their next flight is also from Terminal C to Memphis. We have 2 kids (7 and 1.5 year old). Will they have to claim their baggage at Newark or will it reach directly to Memphis? Since both the arriving and departure terminal are same do they have to take any train or any other commute? Please help.
Yes, in Newark they will go through US Immigration, claim their bags, go through US Customs, re-check their bags at the re-check desk. The flight to Memphis may depart from Terminal C or A. If it departs from A they will take the AirTrain to Terminal A. Then go through security and to their departure gate.
Thanks for the quick response. As per the tickets it is mentioned as Terminal C for Memphis flight so hopefully there will not be any AirTrain commute. Just in case they change it to Terminal A: re-check baggage needs to be done at Terminal A or can it be done in C?
Re-check will be done at a special desk right after you clear customs in C. Don't trust the terminals listed on those reservations - be sure to check the monitors or United.com when you arrive in Newark for the actual departure gate.
My husband and I will be traveling from MAN and have a 3 hour layover in EWR. How does customs work and will we have enough time? Our airline is Lufthansa but operated by united.
In Newark you will arrive in Terminal B or C, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the re-check desk. You will depart from Terminal A or C. If you arrived at a different terminal than where you depart, you will then take the AirTrain to your departure terminal and go through security and to your departure gate. You have enough time.
I have a connecting flight, no hold baggage (just carryon) and 45 minutes in between flights. Both flights are with United Airlines. I'm not sure yet which gate I'll be at, but will they likely be close/manageable because I am flying the same airline?
Where is the first flight from?
It's from Pearson (Toronto)
You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto. If both flights are on United Express you should just have to go from your arrival gate to your departure gate, both in Terminal A.
My family is travelling from India to San Jose through EWR. Considering that there would be 8 bags, Stroller and 3 kids, please let me know if there would be someone to help collect the baggage, go through Customs and then do check-in baggage again for Southwest. Arrival is on Terminal B whereas domestic flight to San Jose is from Terminal A. I am a bit worried.
No, there is no such person. Don't bring more baggage than you can carry. Ship your stuff ahead if you have to. Maybe pack a foldable luggage cart (or maybe 2) in your checked bags.
Flying from Hamburg to New Ark with a connecting flight to Akron/Canton OH. Layover time is only 1:35h. Is this enough and even a legal MCT?
Thanks for your answer
It's tecnhically a legal connection but it will be very difficult for you to make.
Hi, I am looking to book a trip from the Uk to Las Vegas however the return flight includes a 14 hour connection at Newark, I was wondering would we be able to leave the airport during this time to explore the city and if so how realistic is 'popping' into New York and returning to the airport? Regards Laura Hunt
I booked a flight with United and have 1hr 45 minutes layover between the flight (Spain-EWR) to the domestic flight EWR-IAH. I need to get through customs and straight to the gate? Do I have to pick up and check again my luggage? Will this be enough? Any advice?
Yes, you have to go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, possibly take the airtrain to Terminal C, then go through security and to your departure gate. You have barely enough time if everything goes perfectly.
