flying on American airlines to phx with a 45 minute connection to a mesa/american eagle flight. are the gates close and can i make the connection?

All American/American Eagle flights are in Terminal 4. You can make it as long as the first flight is on-time.

I'm arriving on a Southwest flight into terminal 4 at 11:30am and have a 12:30pm flight on Great Lakes from terminal 2. No checked luggage. Is 1 hour sufficient time to make the connection? If not, what is the minimum recommended time.

It's possible, but risky. What you do have going for you is that Great Lakes flights are rarely on-time (although there's a good chance your flight will just get canceled).

Thanks. Very helpful, and prophetic you should say that about Great Lakes. Their flight was cancelled this morning and reinstated about an hour later with a different time.

  • 1 hour layover in Phoenix

We are flying from PDX to ZIH in Mexico; we started out with a 2 hour layover and AA changed it to 1 hour. Is that enough time? Are domestic arrival and international departure gates close together?

All AA gates in Phoenix are relatively close to each other. 1 hour should still be enough time.

We have 40 minute layover palm spring flight (air Canada) to ZIH on American. Is that enough time?

  • Terminal 4 connections and security

Hi = my daughter has booked a flight with American that arrives in Sky Harbor and departs just 42 minutes later, also with American. Does anyone know if (1) she will have to claim her baggage or will American automatically transfer it; and (2) will she have to go through security again since she isn't leaving the terminal? Thank you.

If her first flight is domestic she doesn't have to do anything with her bags or go through security. She just has to go from her arrival gate to her departure gate.

Hi ZAP - do you know if this is also the case when arriving on AA (Gates A&B) and transferring to a SWA Flight (Gates C&D) since they are in the same Terminal)? This would be a commuter flight so carry-on only. I am hoping all gates in T4 are in a secured/connected area so I do not have to go through security again. Thanks for any help!

I asked a question last week about the flight from Cancun to YVR with the layover in Phoenix. You let me know that I barely have enough time. We have Nexus cards. Will that help us at all? Thanks again!

Hi. We will be travelling on May 2nd from Vancouver to Cancun with a layover in PHX. The layover is for 1H33M. Is this enough time? What steps will we have to go through to navigate the airport? Also, we will be doing this trip in reverse on May 11th, this time with a layover of 1H38M. Should we expect the same process as on the way down? All flights are with American Airlines. Thank you!

On the way to Mexico you will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Vancouver. All you have to do in Phoenix is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have plenty of time. On your way back to Vancouver, in Phoenix, you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, go through security and to your departure gate. You barely have enough time. You will go through Canadian immigration and customs when you get to Vancouver.

Thank you so much for your reply! We have Nexus cards. Will this help us at all on our return leg at PHX?

Yes, they should help a little bit.

Flying from ORD to Phoenix then to Maui. Is a 1 hr 8 min connection time enough? All on American

Yes, that is enough time. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

Hi - flying from Cabo to Phoenix on Saturday, arriving @ 2:54PM. I have a connection to EWR that departs Phoenix @ 4:25PM. Both are AA. Is that window (about 1:30) enough to make it through customs and onto our final leg of the flight?

Yes, that should be enough time.

Hello. We are flying MEX-PHX, arriving at 6:30pm, and then connecting PHX– PDX at 9:20pm. Both flights are AA, not sure terminals. I am pretty sure we will have to go through customs in PHX, and my friend is not a US citizen. Would this almost 3 hour layover be long enough?

Yes, that should be enough time. You will go through US Immigration and customs in Phoenix. Both flights will be in Terminal 1.

Since you didn't post how much time you have I can't answer your question.

  • ARRIVING from LV, then flying out to Puerto Vallarta Mexico

How much time would I need for a layover, arriving on American Airlines from Las Vegas, then flying from American airlines to Puerto Vallarta Mexico?

    1 hour should be sufficient.

1 hour even having to go through customs/go to the international side? Sorry never been to DFW international side, been to LAX & we had to walk over outside to another terminal and then get back in which took awhile.

There is no US Immigration and Customs when departing the US.

Can I make from flight AA5644 from DFW to AA flightAA633 on 1-25-16 in 33 minutes

It's possible as all you have to do in PHX is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate, but obviously leaves no time to spare if the first flight is delayed.

I have a family of 5 arriving from Puerto Vallarta on New Years Eve. American Air gave us a 1hr layover to catch another American flight but need to go through customs. Is that enough time?

No, that's totally inadequate. The minimum International to domestic connection time is 90 minutes.

  • Missed flight-avoid security.exit/recently on return trip?

We flew from den to Phx on United, on time, tried to get to terminal 4 via sky train and speed walking for our HI flight but the security line at 4 was unbelievably long and we missed our flight...cost us $225 to get inter island flight. How can we avoid exiting and having to go back through security on our flights home? (Flying American into Phx, then departing on United terminal 2 with only 1 1/2 hours between)

There's no way you can avoid it. You should have researched this BEFORE booking your tickets.

Travel co. booked and what airport makes you go through security again!?! Only at PHX.......they should install secure walking paths between terminals!

Actually lots of airports have terminals connected outside security.

You are correct ZAP, a lot of airports have terminals connected outside security, but I agree with Flyhigh that they should look into increasing their secure connections. I avoid airports that do not have secure connections (even if I have time) due to the huge inconvenience of security. There is a lot of room for improvement at PHX for this reason. Before the increased procedures it wasn't that big of deal but now security check lines can be incredibly long. Therefore all airports should be looking at improving their connection options within the secure areas. I also think airlines (i.e. Southwest) should be REQUIRED to transfer luggage to connecting airlines as long as the connection time is realistic.
