Want to book a luxury suite in Luxembourg, or find a restroom in Rome? There's an app for that, and then some. An estimated 17,000 travel apps are now available. We've tried a lot of them, and even produced two ourselves. Here's a look at some of the most useful, straightforward, do-what-they-promise travel apps. They have gotten us out of travel jams, acted as cyber-concierges, and hooked us up with what we needed in a flash. IFLY Stuck with a long layover or a flight delay? Meet your new TFF (travel friend forever), a guide to more than 700 of the world's airport terminals. (It found us rocking chairs near a live pianist at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, which helped make a six-hour delay bearable.) Find food, terminal, and gate locations, restrooms, shops, and other services. Free for Android, iPhone, iPad; www.ifly.com

The iFly Pro app is probably the most widely known app of its kind. The app, which is $7 on iOS and Android, bills itself as an all-purpose airport guide for "the informed traveler." It contains an airport guide for airports around the world -- from Aalborg through Zurich -- as well as flight timing data and other airline information. Inside the United States, it even alerts you to airport status, including departure delays and closings.

In travel, memories are made with a combination of obsessive planning and good luck. If you don't want to count on the latter for your adventures this summer, I'd recommend downloading a few travel apps.

After the Plane Gets You to the Airport, an App Comes in Handy As many times as I've seen an airport vendor selling a tired-looking sandwich for $10, I'm still dumbstruck. I'll often circle the terminal for 20 minutes, starved and incredulous, before ending up with that miserable sandwich because it's the least worst option...

iFly.com, developer of the most comprehensive flier's guide to over 700 commercial airports, today announced a new release of its popular iFly & iFly Pro applications for iTunes. In addition to providing extensive airport data and maps, iFly Pro's new release adds GPS location to their unique airport terminal maps, allowing in-terminal navigation to gates and amenities.
Now iFly & iFly Pro users can locate where they are in hundreds of airports and quickly navigate where they need to go. "We've added the GPS function of the iPhone to our pre-scaled terminal maps, so now you can see where you are in airports in relation to gates and amenities. This will take a lot of guesswork out of finding your way inside airports," says Anthony Hanseder, CEO of iFly.com. With iFly's in-terminal navigation, passengers can now find out where their gate is located or quickly find the nearest restaurant, restroom, airline lounge, etc.

GENEVA - The scene at Copenhagen International Airport one recent day was much like that at any airport around the world: passengers hurrying through the terminal, waiting in security lines or lingering at the duty-free shops.
Nicolas Righetti for The New York Times
Stephane Cheikh, innovation manager at SITA, with a 3-D display of passengers at Copenhagen Airport.
But unlike other airports, the movement of the passengers was being observed in an office here in Geneva, 860 miles away. Stephane Cheikh, innovation manager for the aviation communications and technology company SITA, was using his laptop to demonstrate a new program that tracked travelers' movements based on the Wi-Fi-emitting devices they carried.
When Copenhagen Airport starts using the program in the next few weeks, airport officials will get a real-time picture of where travelers go and what they do. The officials can use this information to improve the design of the airport, direct the flow of passengers or shift employees to improve the efficiency of security or immigration checkpoints.

I have written about quite a few iPhone Apps that are fantastic tools for tracking flights or finding your way through an airport. But this week's iPhone App of the Week offers such an extensive set of tools for travelers that I put it off for a few weeks because I didn't even know where to begin.
Creating the series of Screen Shots featured at the end of each iPhone App of the Week its self was a daunting task, as I created 52 screen shots - but managed to edit the screen shots down to 24 - 8 more screen shots than I normal allow for my maximum number of images.
So what is this week's iPhone App of the Week? iFly Pro.
Traveling with iFly Pro is akin to loading a Swiss Army Knife into your iPhone the iFly Pro App provides detailed information for more than 300 commercial airports, covering virtually every commercial airport in the United States and Canada as well as more than 100 major international airports outside of the United States and Canada - however I find that iFly Pro updates fairly regularly adding new airports to the available database.
The airport information databases available from the iFly Pro App include topics such as
- Flight Status
- Terminal Map
- Airlines
- Food / Bars / Shops
- Amenities & Services
- Parking Information
- Ground Transportation
- Layover Ideas
- Overview & History
