If your tickets were bought on the same reservation, yes, your bags can be checked through. I believe you will need a schengen visa as I do not believe FCO has a sterile non-schengen connection area like some European airports.

However, as a non-Schengen arrival at FCO (UA is in Terminal 5 - designated for US & Israel flights) you need to go through passport check before proceeding via special shuttle to your connecting SQ flight at Terminal 3. T3 has Boarding Areas D (gates D1-10) and Area H (gates H6-19). You have plenty of time for transfer.

You will not have to go through any passport control or customs in FCO as both Germany and Italy are in Schengen. You will arrive in Terminal 3 and depart from Terminal 1. The best way to get between these terminal is probably to walk, but it will be a bit of a long walk. You should have enough time assuming your bags come out reasonably quickly. However, if you want to be safe, book the later flight. It's Italy. Things move at a slower pace there.

Sumay is incorrecy. Your Delta flight will ARRIVE in Terminal 3, not Terminal 5 (terminal 5 is departure only). You won't have to pay baggage fees on your international itinerary.

Only US airlines use T5 in FCO. Alitalia flights to the US use terminal 3.

When arriving at Terminal 3 of FCO, you need to take the shuttle to Terminal 5's Boarding Area G; you have enough time. Signs will guide you.

I should have added that we are from Australia , will this affect the immigration procedure as we have never heard of the Schengen zone also is 1 hour enough time to catch the connecting flight to Athens ?

I believe you're on Alitalia, not "Air Italia". That flight will leave from Terminal 1. I think you will have enough time and if you miss your connection, they have other flights to Cagliari - I'd stay with the one you have.

At FCO, T2 is connected at the arrivals level to T1. On arrival at T2 after going through non-Schengen passport control, proceed to T1 (follow signs), go up to the departures level, go through security check and on to of T1's Boarding Area B with gates 1-30.

It depends on the terminal and the time of day with how long it takes to clear customs and it depends what you mean "downtown" - do you mean to Paddington? Minimum time from Door open to gate at LHR to stepping off the train at Paddington would be about 1:15 minutes, but probably close to 2 hours would be more normal.

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough. Arriving FROM LHR into FCO. BA flight, so T3 at FCO. How long from landing to Termini Station Rome. After going through non-Schlengen pass control.

On arrival at FCO you need to go through non-Schengen passport check & customs clearance. Make sure your first airline transfers your bags to your connecting airline (if you use separate airlines) - if not, you need to re-check in your bag at T1. Free shuttles run between all terminals & carparks every 15 mins. Count at least 75 minutes for transfer time (add another 20 minutes if you need to re-check in your bag with different airline).
