  • 35 minute connection time between international flights

Have a flight booked with United for YYZ to PEK with a connection in SFO. Just received notice of a schedule change, and now I only have 35 minutes between flights. I'm assuming it's not nearly enough time for me to deplane, go through customs (I'm Canadian), pick up and re-check luggage, and go to the new gate. Not to mention potential delays. Can I request United to rebook me on something else, or what are my options if I miss the connections? Thanks!

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto. All you have to do in SFO is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. However, United doesn't fly non-stop from YYZ to SFO which means that flight will be operated by Air Canada, some Air Canada arrivals are in the same concourse your flight to PEK will depart from but some arrive in the other concourse of the international terminal. You can try to rebook your flights and you are entitled to a refund because of the schedule change if you want it.

thanks for the prompt response ZAP! would you know if i will be charged the fare difference if i asked united to rebook my flights? i got a really good deal on my flights and have to be in asia during that time for a wedding so would prefer not to refund...

They will try to rebook you, but they may not be able to find something that works better. Since you had an involuntary schedule change you are in a good position. Maybe they can rebook you to connect in Chicago or Washington DC instead of San Francisco.

Hi, I'm flying from San Diego to SFO to Singapore, and I got my tickets in a single transaction. I'm flying Virgin America (operated by singapore airlines) and then Singapore airlines. Do I need to collect my luggage and re-checkin at SFO? Is there also a passageway between the domestic terminal and the international terminal or do I have to go through customs again. Appreciate any help!! Thank you!

sorry I meant do i need to clear security again at SFO for my transfer flight or can I transfer directly within. Thank you.

You will have to go through security in SFO as Virgin America's Terminal 2 is not connected to any other terminals inside security. Your bags should be transferred automatically.

    Ok, thank you so much!

Hi! I am flying from Newark to Honolulu and there is one stop in SFO, but it is only 35 minutes. Can I make it since it is a domestic flight? Worst case I will have to take the next plane with no extra charge. It is the last flight united has to Honolulu that night. Whole trip booked with United. Hope someone here can help me before I book a ticket :)

It's possible if your flight from Newark is on-time. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, both in Terminal 3.

Ok, thats great!! Thanks for replying me so quickly!

Arriving into SFO from FRA w/United at approx. 4:20 p.m. Connecting on to another UA flight to Kona at 5:43 p.m. Will there be sufficient time to clear Customs, claim luggage and check in for domestic flight to Kona in 1:23 minutes?

That's 7 minutes shorter than the recommended international to domestic connection time. It's possible if everything goes perfectly, but if your first flight is delayed or if there are bad lines at immigration you won't make it and you'll likely be stuck in SFO overnight.

I am scheduled to arrive at SFO 1919 at terminal 3 with United airlines from Denver and need to check in for an international flight to London with Virgin departing SFO terminal 1 at 21.25 on 3 October. Will I have enough time at SFO? My 2 bookings are not connected

Assuming the United flight is domestic, with checked baggage that will be very difficult. Also Virgin Atlantic uses the International Terminal, not Terminal 1. You will have to transfer your bags yourself between the Terminal 3 baggage claim and the International Terminal Check-In desk for Virgin Atlantic. If the first flight is on-time this connection is possible, but it depends on everything going smoothly.

I arrive in San Fran at 11.33a to make a connecting flight to London at 12.55. Will there be enough time to make the connection?

Assuming both tickets were purchased together on the same reservation, yes, that is enough time.

  • Not using final leg of Sydney - LAX via SFO

I'm flying to SFO on united. The flight is technically from Sydney to LAX via SFO however I don't want to use the final domestic leg. Does checked in luggage get automatically transferred onto the domestic leg or can I get it when getting of at SFO and just not turn up for the SFO - LAX flight.

After you go through US Immigration in SFO you will claim your bags. After you clear customs you can rip the tags off and are legally free to go where you want.

I am the green card holder. My flight will arrive at SFO at 9am from Hongkong, I think it will be at Terminal G. My connecting flight to Dallas will be at 10:40 am at Terminal 3 I think. All tickets is under one reservation. Is it possible to make it? What is the fastest way to go from Terminal G to Terminal 3? Thanks

It is possible. The G concourse of the International Terminal and Terminal 3 are right next to each other. Once you clear customs just follow signs to your departure gate.

I need to claim bags. The ticket agent told me that. Is the baggage claim and re-check desk far from Terminal 3? What is the fastest way to go to T3 after re-checking my bags? Is it still possible to make it on time for next flight? Thanks

The re-check desk will be in the International Terminal right after you clear Customs. Terminal 3 is right next to the International Terminal. Yes, it is possible for you to make your connection.

My mom is flying through SFO, arriving on Alaska Airlines to Intl. Terminal and flying out on Delta from 1. She has roughly 1,5 hrs of layover. Will she have enough time? Is there a corridor connecting the terminals? How can she get there?

There is no corridor connecting them inside security. She will have to exit security, take the AirTrain or walk to Terminal 1 and go back through security. She has enough time.

I will be traveling from Hong Kong to SFO and landing at 21:00 (9:00) on Cathay Pacific. To get to my final destination I must take a red eye leaving at 10:35 on United is that cutting it to close can I even make such a connection? Its the only non-stop flight to my final destination so I would like to try to make this work.

Yes, that is cutting it too close if you are on two separate reservations and have checked baggage. If that's the case. Plan on spending the night in San Francisco.

I am landing at terminal 3 from edmonton and leaving to San Diego from terminal 2 45 minutes later, is this possible? Do I need to get my luggage or just run? Both are with air canada

Air Canada does not fly from San Francisco to San Diego, nor do they use Terminal 2, nor do they fly Edmonton-San Francisco. Both of your flights will be on United and in Terminal 3. all you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. you have enough time if your first flight is on-time. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Edmonton.

All flights on United and 1:27 minute connection time. Do I have to clear immigration and recheck bags before Vancouver flight

Yes, in San Francisco you will arrive in the G concourse of the International terminal, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go through security and to your departure gate in Terminal 3. You will go through Canadian immigration and customs when you get to Vancouver.

Do they have the passport kiosk at immigration that Canadian citizens are allowed to use to expedite the process

Canadian citizens are allowed to use the same Kiosks as US Citizens and repeat ESTA users.
