I'm hoping to take a 9:30am United flight out of Vegas, landing at SFO at 11:16am, followed by an international SQ flight which is due to depart at 2:05pm. Is this doable? We will have luggage with us and not sure United will be able to check our bags all the way through to Singapore (which is our ultimate destination). Thanks!

I'm arriving at 9:30am on a Southwest flight. How long (if our bag come out in a timely manner) will it take me to get from there to the International Terminal using the Airtrain?

I imagine you could be in the International Terminal sometime between 10 and 10:15.

    Thank you! :o)

  • Minimum time before International Departure

What is the absolute minimum time one can arrive at SFO for a 12:05pm International departure on Cathay Pacific ? Will already have Board Pass in hand, and no luggage. I've seen some passengers who are late for a flight be allowed to the front of the line for security. Of course will get to the airport ASAP, but have an appt in San Francisco and need to know what my cut-off time is. Thanks

You would probably be OK if you arrived at the airport between 11:20 and 11:30

hello, i will be on United flight from ICN Seoul to SFO to Sacramento. i arrive in SFO 11:30am then 1:55pm united express/skywest flight to Sacramento. will 2hr 25min enough time to make it? i do have two checked bags. after going through custom where do i go to check-in my bag again? my flight is skywest united express. Thank you for your help!

You will be able to re-check your bags immediately after you clear US Customs at the transfer desk. Then you will go to the departure level, through security and to your departure gate. You have enough time.

Thank you for the answer! looks like skywest is gate 84. how far is that from customs? do i need to take a train or is that walking distance? Thank you again

    It is walking distance.

hello. :)) so I d have a question for you. I d fly from san dieg to san francisco and then I d have a tarnsfer to Frakfurt. and what do you think, to get from the terminal 3 to terminal 1, 50 mins is enough? would you take that risk? thank you for your answer. :)

No flights to Frankfurt leave from Terminal 1. Both Lufthansa and United flights to Frankfurt depart from the G concourse of the International Terminal which is directly connected to Terminal 3 by a walkway. You should have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

ah okay thank you. when I tried to book the fligh I saw that on their site.. term 1 and so.. but hey in my case, would u take that risk?? because I have to decide and I wanted to be sure, to hear the opinion of others.

If there's a reasonable earlier flight from San Diego I'd probably pick it instead, but I would say the connection as it is is still reasonably low risk.

im concern with my baggages since i buy the ticket separately, UNITED might not help me to interconnect the baggage to the final desination. how to i go about it?

You will have to pay to check your bag at your origin, then claim your bag from United, then take it to the Singapore Airlines check-in counter in the International Terminal. You will need at least 90 minutes, preferably 2 hours to make such a connection.

Claim baggage from United is it the same level as to walk the connected walkway from gates 75 to international G? Cos my parents are eldery to handle 3 checkin baggages. Worry they might be lost in the big crowded airport. Thanks

TThe Baggage claime is on the lower level and Singapore check in counter will be on the upper level of the adjacent building. There are elevators and escalators though.

  • Departing International Flight

My flight arriving from SLC with departure from SFO to Taipei has been reduced to about a 1 hour layover from 11:03pm to 12:05am from originally about two hours. Any ideas if this would be enough time to check in through the international terminal?

Did you purchase tickets separately or together? What airlines are you flying?

I bought them together through Orbitz. I ended up calling Orbitz. I decided I didn't want to stress about missing an international flight and they rebooked for an earlier flight. I now have a six hour layover in SFO. Thanks for your reply.

I come in at gate 66 and have a 30 minute connection. I have to get to gate 86. Considering they close the doors 15 minutes before departure, is this enough time?

They usually do not close the doors 15 minutes before departure. Your connection is doable but really requires that your first flight be on-time.

    Thank you

I am flying into SFO from SIN via Singapore at 1115hrs and I have a connecting flight to PHX via United at 1247hrs. The layover is about 1 hr 37mins. Is there enough time?

Yes, that should be enough time. Once you arrive in the International Terminal, you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, and re-check your bags at the transfer desk. Then United's Terminal 3 is directly adjacent to the International Terminal.

Thanks, Zap, for your reply. I apologise for making some errors in the previous question. I am flying into SFO from SIN via Singapore Airlines at 1115hrs. I have a connecting flight to PHX via United at 1247hrs (booked separately). The layover is about 1 hr 32mins. I hope that there is enough time. I accessed United's webpage and note that similar connections all an all-United itinerary eg. ICN-SFO-DEN or ICN-SFO-ORD has layovers as short as 1hr 26 min! These are all International flights into SFO airport with a subsequent domestic connection.

You need to ask the Singapore Airlines agent in Singapore if they can tag your bag through to PHX by showing your United confirmation. If they do, so, then you can drop your bags at the re-check counter and proceed directly to security if you get your United boarding pass online before leaving Singapore. Otherwise, you will have to take your bags to the United counters in Terminal 3. With having to clear US Immigration and Customs, you may arrive too late to check your bags in that case. If you are not checking a bag, you should be OK, just be sure to check-in online for your United flight before leaving Singapore.

  • ACK to SFO Connecting to PDX

Hi. My husband is flying into SFO from New Zealand at 11:55am and has to go through customs on a green card visa (first entry), his connecting flight to PDX (booked separately) is at 2:00pm with Delta. Is 2 hours enough time to get to the terminal for his to his next flight?

It will be somewhat difficult. You should also note that Delta does not fly from SFO to Portland. His flight is probably on Alaska Airlines. The walk from the part of the International Terminal where you will exit customs and the Alaska Airlines check-in counter is quite short.

Hmm, that's what I was worried about. Would 3 hours give him enough time? I know his flight is going from SFO to LAX and then to Portland. Thanks for your feedback.

Oh, if he's flying to LAX first he is likely on Delta. In that case it's actually a more difficult connection since the Delta check-in counters are further away.

I'm glad I moved his flight to give him 4 hours to get through everything then! Thanks so much for your help, you're awesome. We'd have been in trouble if I hadn't asked.

Is there any people who help the disabled and old? With directions and wheelchairs etc. if there is how far they can go like can they go through immigration and customs all the way to check in?

If you need wheelchair service you need to contact their airline and request it.

Hi, This is my first time abroad and have to know what to do after landing at sfo. Is it baggage claim first or customs and immigrations first?, i'm going to saltlake. Don't know what steps to take first. Please help me. God bless

Is it immigration - baggage - customs - check in. Right? 😄

Correct, it is Immigration, baggage claim, then customs, then re-check, then security.

Hi, flying in Air Newzeland 01/11/14 landing at 11.45am. I have a Southwest airlines flight to Houston aleaving at 2.30pm. Do u think I will make the Southwest flight? Please explain the procedure re customs and baggage collection & how to get to the Southwest airlines area?

You will arrive in the International Termina, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, and go through US Customs. Then you have to follow the signs to the airtrain to Terminal 1 and then exit and check your bags with Southwest. If you want a good boarding number, check in with Southwest online before you leave Australia. Also, be aware that Southwest does not fly nonstop from SFO to Houston. So your flight likely stops somewhere else first. Be aware of that.

Thanks for that - do you think 2 hrs or so is enough time to make the Southwest Airlines flight

It's probably enough time. Personally I'd want a little more though. Baggage check lines at Southwest can be pretty long sometimes.

  • 1hour and 30min layover time

Hi - I am flying from Hong Kong - Las Vegas. I am wondering if 1hour and 30min is enough time taking the whole recheck-in in consideration? FYI it is UNITED both ways. On the way to Vegas I'll be in SFO from 8.30am-10am and return flight from 11.55am-13.25pm. Will I have enough time? Thanks

Yes, that should be enough time. On your way to Las Vegas, in SFO you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags with United, then go through security and to your departure gate. On you way back to Hong Kong, all you have to do in SFO is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. There is a walkway connecting Terminal 3 where you will likely arrive and the G concourse of the International Terminal where you will depart.

Thank you so much, this is super helpful. Have a great day!
