Never been to SFO and I am flying from MSN-ORD-SFO-TPE. What do I do when I arrive in SFO.

Assuming your flight to TPE is on United, all you have to do in SFO is walk from your arrival gate in Terminal 3 to your departure gate in concourse G of the International Terminal. There is a walkway inside security between those two areas. So all you have to do is walk from one gate to the other.

Thank you! Are my only dealings with customs and immigration in TPE or do I have to do something in SFO?

Correct, on your way to Taipei you won't have to do anything with your bags or go through any immigration proceedings until you get to Taipei.

Thank you, again!! Last question (for now): On the return trip will I go through Customs/Immigration in SFO or ORD? I truly appreciate your help:-)

On the return in SFO you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then go through security.

  • Munich Flight to SFO

I will be going from Munich (Luftansa) to SFO and landing in SFO at 7:00pm. My United flight from SFO to Orange County is at 8:30pm. Will I have enough time to clear customs/immigration and make flight??

That will likely barely be enough time assuming your first flight is on-time.

If I arrive on a United flight at SFO (terminal 1) and have a departing flight on Delta (terminal 3) do I need to exit and then clear security or is there a way to do this without having to go through security again?

You have your terminals reversed. United uses Terminal 3, Delta uses Terminal 1. Yes, you will have to exit security and take the AirTrain between Terminals. They are not connected inside security.

I'm arriving from Istanbul at 4:25pm on Turkish Airlines. I'm looking to book our next leg to PHX. There is a Southwest flight I'd love to get that leaves at 6:20pm. Is that enough time? Or should I book the USAirways at 8:30? flight We'll be dog tired and want to get home!

    6:20 is not enough time.

  • YVR --> SFO --> SAN

Hi there! I will be landing in SFO from SAN at 6:21. The flight to YVR is at 7:13, giving me only 52 minutes to make my connection. Is this feasible? It will be the returning flight.

I forgot to mention that SAN to SFO will be on United. SFO to YVR will be on Air Canada.

Yes, that is feasible. Some Air Canada gates are directly accessible from the United gates without going through security. Some you have to go through security. But even if it's one of the ones where you have to go through security, I think you have enough time if your flight from SAN is on-time.

  • Connection Time

Hi we are booked to travel LAX to SFO and then connect SFO to LHR. We are travelling with Delta LAX SFO arrival terminal 1 then travelling British Airways SFO to LHR departure from the international terminal. Our flights are issued on separate tickets so I assume we won't be able to check in all the way through. We are also travelling with 2 children. What is the minimum time you would suggest?

I would suggest 2 hours at a bare minimum. Preferably 3 hours.

Hi, I've booked an Air New Zealand flight From BNE - SFO via AKL which is scheduled to land at 12:50pm on 21st May. I am now needing to book an onwards journey to Chicago (ORD) and am looking at a 4:05pm departure on the same day with Virgin America. The flights will be on separate tickets and am wondering if this layover time is doable? Considering I know I will have to clear customs, immigration etc. Thanks for your help!

Yes, that will probably be enough time.

HI I'M travelling with 2 seniors but are able to walk. we only have 35 min lay over in SFO, do you think we have enough time to transfer gate within the same terminal?

If your first flight is on-time. yes, that should be enough time.

thank you ZAP, this is very helpful

Hi. Got revised itinerary from AC and my 1hr25m connection is now down to 57 minutes. Arriving from Lihue on UA into T3. Departing on AC from International Term. It looks like the walk is not too long, but do we have to go thru security? Good news is that it is late at night, bad news is my party includes 3 small kids. Is this connection feasible even if inbound flight is on time? Thx!

Some Air Canada flights depart from the side of the International Terminal that doesn't require going through security and some do. You should still have enough time if your flight is on-time.

Thanks for this. Last night's flight to YYZ went from gate G91 which I guess - based on its proximity to terminal 3 - would be a gate that would not require me to go through security?

    Correct.

  • can you go from an american gate to united without boarding pass

I want to fly in on American but have a meeting in the united terminal - near gate 67. Can I walk directly to there or do I need a united boarding pass? Thanks

You need a United boarding pass. Those gates aren't connected inside security.

  • is two hours enough to connect?

I will be arriving to SFO at 8 am from an international flight, then I will have to connect to another flight to LAX that flies at 11 am. tickets were booked separately and are different airlines. now am I going to have enough time to catch up to my Lax plane? what about my bag, should I check in to SF and take it? are terminals far from each other? I'm really afraid that I will have to wait in the longest line to check in security.. what do you guys think?

I can't help you very much unless you tell me what airlines you are flying and where you're coming from.

  • flying from Vcr to Kahului via San Fransisco

Hi - 3 of us are flying with United from Vancouver, B.C. to Kahului March 14. We land in SFO at 3:15 p.m. have a 1 hour stopover and leave for Kahului at 4:15. Do you know where we go through Customs? Vancouver or SFO? Will we land at the International terminal at SFO or different terminal 3? Is one hour enough time to get to the United flight that leaves for Kahului at 4:15? Would the 4:15 flight be domestic therefore leaving from terminal 3? thanks

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Vancouver. All you have to do in SFO is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. All United gates in SFO are connected inside security (both T3 and the G concourse of the Intl Terminal) You should have enough time.

Thanks so much for the information.

  • Connection from Swiss/LX in SFO into Jackson Hole (JAC) in T3

Great web-forum!!! One question: United has changed our flight on the 4th of July. We now arrive 16:15 pm on LX from Zurich and will connect to a United/Skywest into Jackson Hole ETD 17:45 pm. All booked in one ticket (award trip). Is that enough time to go through immigration, and do we need to pass security. I assume we can check our luggage through since it is all in one ticket.

That should be enough time. Your bags will be tagged through to JAC, but you will have to claim them after US Immigration to go through US Customs, then re-check them with United at the transfer desk immediately afterwards. You will also have to go through security.

I have a southwestern flight from denver arriving at 7:25pm and have to catch an air NZ flight that leaves at 9:45 pm. They are not connected flights so I'll have to collect luggage. I'm a NZ passport holder. Will I have to go through customs? Will I have enough time?

No, you will not go through Customs. There is no US Customs when departing the US. You just have to get your bags from the Southwest baggage claim and take them to the Air New Zealand counter in the International Terminal then go through security. You should have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

  • ICN > SFO > ATL
    Feb 25, 2015

I'm flying from ICN into SFO on Singapore Airlines and flying again from SFO to ATL on Delta and the tickets were purchased separate. I originally had 4 hours of layover in SFO but Delta has changed my flight (SFO > ATL) and now I only have 1.5 hours to make a connection. After going through immigration, customs and all that, do you think I can make the connection with two cases: if I have a checked luggage, or I only have a carry-on? I'm a green card holder if that makes any difference in the immigration line.

If you only have a carry-on then I think you can make it if you check-in online for your delta flight before leaving Seoul. If you need to check a bag you'll have to transfer it yourself and won't have enough time. You need to call delta and ask to be rebooked on a later flight. They will have to honor your request without a change fee since they changed your booking. If they cannot or will not then demand a refund and book a ticket on another airline.

Thanks! Looks like reducing my luggage into a single carry-on and having my eBoarding pass ready on iPhone before I leave Seoul is the best option. With the next flight I would have almost 10 hours of layover just on that day.
