Flying domestic from DTW to SFO then onward SFO to Sydney on same booking & airline. Is 1 hr 50 mins enough time to make the connection in SFO?

We are a family of three flying from Malaysia to SFO arriving on July 13th at 1620hours. We want to book a connecting flight to Las Vegas that same day, but we are unsure as to how much time to allocate to safely catch the flight to Las Vegas. Will 4hours be enough time?

Yes, 4 hours should be sufficient.

I have a layover in sfo for 51 min. My flight is booked all through United. Do I need to pass through customs in SFO or do I just have to walk to my departure gate? Assuming that I pass through customs at LAX. Do I have enough time as well?

You always have to go through custom at the first airport in the US.51min sound be enough if your 1.flight isn't late and if it's not crazy busy

  • SYD to SFO to YYC connection - will I make it?!

Hi there , Im planning a trip from Australia to Banff via sfo and YYC. Flight is Qantas from SYD arriving at 12:30pm. I'm hoping to make a direct SFO->YYC flight at 14:10. It will be on the 17 December .. Do you think I will make it ? There is a later flight at 15:08 but that has a 5 hr stopover.. Any thoughts or suggestions would be very much appreciated thank you !!! :)

On two separate reservations I don't think that first connection is possible. Even if it's the same reservation it would be very difficult.

    Great thank you!

Hi There I have read ZAP's comments and think I have enough time but just want to check I have booked United Airlines Vancouver to SFO departing 6.00am Sat 6 YVR - SFO YVR 600-817 UA618 Arrives 8.17am On a separate booking I have then booked a flight on the same morning SFO to New York Departs 1045am SFO - New York SFO 1045 EWR 1906 UA1071 Reading through the replies (ZAP in particular) have I got these facts correct?? I can go through USA customs (I'm on a NZ passport with correct USA visa) in Vancouver? I then have to collect my bags and book in at United Airlines check-in in SFO (as my two flights are NOT on the same ticket) ? The flights are in the same terminal (United Terminal 3) so I don't have a big walk between connecting flights? Do I have to go through US customs / immigartion again in SFO? Have I planned enough time between flights? I have checked bags Many thanks

Yes, you will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Vancouver. If you show your confirmation for the EWR flight to the agent in Vancouver, they can check your bags through to EWR so all you would have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate in SFO.

    thanks ZAP

I'm flying in from Düsseldorf (Europe) with Air Berlin (18:00). My domestic connection is to Las Vegas with Virgin (19:20). Is it possible to catch the flight to Las Vegas? With US Immigration, claiming bags, go through US Customs, recheck bags, walk to departure terminal, security and gate.....

No, that's not reasonably possible. If there's no later flight I recommend planning on spending the night in San Francisco.

  • Transferring from Intl to Domestic on United in SFO

Hi, I am travelling SYD to SFO, then SFO to BOS on United. Do I have to clear customs and claim bags and recheck or will they be automatically transferred? I have 80mins between flights and have been advised that I will have ample time to make the connection.

In SFO you will have to go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, go through security and to your departure gate. This is a bit of a risky connection, but is possible if everything goes perfectly.

  • Toronto to SFO 1hr 25min layover to Reno enough time?
    Apr 16, 2017

I'm just wondering if as a Canadian coming from Toronto and stopping in SFO for 1 hr 25 min layover will have enough to make the Reno flight? Immigration? Collecting bag? I'm not sure of the procedure. Thanks - Cat lady

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto. All you have to do in SFO is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time.

    Thank you!

Hi, I am flying from Australia into LAX then getting a connecting flight to San Fran. Do I need to go through LAX immigration or can I just get my connecting flight to San Fran and clear imagination in San Fran?

In LAX you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, walk to your departure terminal, and go through security and to your departure gate.

Arriving SFO at 12:55 pm on Air NZ then switching to another airline (separate booking) for a 3:35 pm departure to IAD. Will that be enough time to deplane, clear customs, go through security and make the connection? Thanks!

It's not impossible but it will be very difficult, especially if you have checked baggage.

We are planning to only have carry on bags. Thanks for the help!

  • SIN>SFO; SFO>YVR/ YVR>SFO; SFO

Family and I intend to fly into SFO From SIN, on SQ, then onward SFO>YVR.. By all accounts, international flight into SFO then domestic to Vancouver.. Do we have to go through US Customs/ Immigration and/or Security? If we have to, it will be unlikely that we'll make it cos transit time just 2h 15m.. I have same question with regards to YVR>SFO and then US Customs/ Immigration/ Security for onward SFO>SIN... Bottom line, seeing the number of delays on YouTube thru US Customs/ Immigration/ Security, if my family has to be subject to borderline molesting, I'll choose to fly into YVR via a non-US City.. Many thanks!

Yes, you have to go through US Immigration, Claim your bags, go through US Customs, then go through security and to your departure gate. 2 Hrs 15 mins is enough time if both flights are on the same reservation. On the return flight, you will pre-clear US Immigration and customs in Vancouver, so if both flights are on the same reservation then all you have to do in SFO is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

  • Baggage Questions for Connecting Flights
    Apr 8, 2017

I am traveling from LAX with two connecting flights, the first at SFO and the second at Toronto, headed to YOW, both flights are with Air Canada. Would I have to claim and recheck my baggage for both flights? (i.e. Once arriving at SFO from LAX and then SFO to Toronto)

If all the flights are on the same reservation all you have to do in SFO is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate and then in Toronto all you should have to do is go through Canadian Immigration and customs.

Flying from Vancouver to Pvr with an connection through San Fran. I will be going through US customs in Vancouver before landing in San Fran. Will I have enough time to make my flight to Pvr if I only have 1 hr and 5 mins.

Yes, you have enough time. If both flights are on United then all you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate in SFO.

Denver to San Francisco virgin america flight then need to connect China Southern to Guangzhou, baggage is checked for final destination at Denver, is there any way I can walk to international terminal without taking air train? or what is the best way to catch international flight? how much minimum time is suggested ? Please.

Yes, you can walk or take the AirTrain. Either way you have to go through security again in the International Terminal. I recommend at least 75 minutes.
