  • Vancouver to Tucson via SFO
    Aug 24, 2016
I want to fly to Tucson from Vancouver. I'll pass US Customs in Vancouver. Plan to fly United Airlines. Do the incoming flights from Canada land at T3? The connecting flight to Tucson is run by United Express, and those appear to leave from T3. There is only 40 minutes between flights (not yet booked) - given delays due to weather/traffic, should I book with more time between flights?

Yes, you will both arrive and depart from T3. It is possible if the first flight is on-time. You can't predict delays.

Thank you. At least I won't have to go far.

  • flying out of YVR to LHR stop at SFO

Do I need to have an ESTA for Amercia? I will have one for Canada. I have booked my flight with AirCanada and both legs are on same ticket and booked at same time. Will my checked bags get transferred to new plane during stop over or do we need to collect them and check in again at SFO? Many thanks

What is your citizenship? Canadian ETA doesn't do anything for you in the US. Your second flight will be operated by United. All you have to do in Vancouver is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Vancouver.

  • Minimum connection time needed
    Aug 8, 2016
We will be flying into SFO from Toronto via Air Canada. From SFO we have a 2hr 11 min connection time to get on Qantas flight to Sydney. A few questions: Will we have to go through customs/security in SFO or will that be done in Toronto? Will our bags be checked right through to Sydney or will we have to collect them? Lastly, will 2hr 11 min be enough time to make the connection on the Qantas flight?

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto. Are your tickets purchased on one reservation or two separate reservations?

  • sydney to phl connecting in sfo

My son's flight from Sydney to SF was delayed. He will be arriving inSFO at 11:50 am on Quantas, and needs to make a connection to an AA flight to PHL, boarding time at 1:30 p.m. The reservations are on the same ticket. He checked one bag. Is this enough time to make the connection? What does he have to do, e.g., does he have to claim his bag and recheck it? Thank you.

He still has a chance of making it. Yes, he will have to claim his bag to go through US Customs, then immediately re-check it at the re-check desk. if he misses his connection they will rebook him on their next available flight to PHL - possibly through another AA hub such as DFW, PHX, CLT, or ORD.

    Thank you!

  • Minimum Time Connecting Flight
    Aug 4, 2016
Hi there, I plan on purchasing ticket from YVR to SYD via SFO with a 1hr 10 min connecting flight. Would that be enough time with checked baggage? Will be flying business. Thank you!

YVR to SFO via Air Canada then SFO to SYD via United

If both tickets are on the same reservation that is enough time. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Vancouver.

Thank you! Both flights on the same reservation. Would I need to collect my luggage and go through customs again?

Sorry, you already answered that with the pre-clearance bit. Thanks again.

  • Arriving from ICN(Seoul) and connecting to PHL(Philadelphia)
    Aug 30, 2016
It says I have 2 hr and 55 min layover time. I am not a US citizen so I imagine customs will take a fair amount of time. I'm wondering if that is enough time to make the connection

That should be enough time. What airlines are you flying?

United. It's a connected flight, but from what I heard I still have to get my bags, go through immigration, check my bags again, go through security, etc.?

Yes, you do have to do that but you have enough time.

Hi there, I want to fly from London Heathrow to New Zealand vid San Fran. The flight from London to San Fran is with Virgin but has an air New Zealand code and the flight from San Fran to NZ is with air New Zealand (assuming it will all be on the same ticket). The layover in San Fran is 2 hours-do I have to go through immigration, collect luggage and then re check my luggage and go through security? Is 2 hours enough? Will I already be checked in the whole way if all on same ticket and will just need to get bags and clear immigration? Flight from London gets into San Fran at 17.50. Thanks!

  • YYZ - SFO - PSP is 2 hour Connection time adequate
    Aug 3, 2016
Arriving on Air Canada @ 12:40 pm from Toronto. will have checked baggage. separate booking with Virgin America to PSP departing 2:40 pm. travelling business/first class on both legs. will 2 hours do?

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto. Do you have checked bags?

Yes, I will have checked bags

Then you have just enough time. You will have to claim your bags in the International Terminal, take them with you on the airTrain to T2, re-check them with Virgin America, and go through security.

  • 40 minutes from Terminal 3 to International -- Hand luggage
    Aug 3, 2016
United has rerouted me ATL to SFO arrive terminal 3 with a 40 minute connect time for United flight to Sydney out of international. That seems REALLY tight, but CSR said acceptable with hand luggage (though I felt they were just trying to "get me off the phone."). I have a couple teens with me. Thoughts?

Yes, it is possible. T3 and concourse G of the International Terminal are connected inside security. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. it obviously leaves no time to spare if the flight from Atlanta is delayed.

Hello! Planning a trip on AA/JAL, and have a question about connections as I will be traveling with kids. If my flight lands at SFO from LAX at 12:25PM and flight from SFO-HND is at 2:55PM, is that enough time? If all flights are on the same itinerary (though LAX-SFO would be on AA and SFO-HND is on JAL codeshare with AA), will my baggage be checked all the way through to HND in LAX or will I have to claim my luggage in SFO and check it in again? Will I have to go through security again at SFO? Thanks for any advice, nervous about connections with kids...

Yes, your bags will be checked through. You will have to go through security again as you will arrive in Terminal 2 and depart from the International Terminal and they are not connected inside security. You have enough time.

    THANK YOU, ZAP! very helpful!

  • Domestic to international 80 minutes?
    Aug 1, 2016
Hi I'm arriving on a UA flight from EWR and am going on to AKL on the same ticket booked through Air NZ. It seems like I have to collect my luggage then re-check it on the way to international departures. Is 1 hour 20 enough for this?

You do not have to do anything with your bags in San Francisco. That is enough time. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. There is a walkway connecting Terminal 3 and concourse G of the International Terminal inside security.

    Thank you!

  • Terminal 3 to International Term A - 55 minute layover
    Jul 30, 2016
Flying in from Phx , arriving at 1:00 am, then leaving at 1:55 am (JAL) for Tokyo. I argued with travel person at American that 55 minutes is not enough time and she assured me it is. I am stressing out, is it really enough time? I did change our seats on the Phx flight to row 5. I don't need to get my bags, checked in all the way through to Tokyo. I can't run.

You will actually arrive in Terminal 1 or 2, not Terminal 3, but you will still have to go through security again in the International Terminal. You do have enough time if your flight from Phoenix is on-time. There will be no lines at 1 AM.

  • Koea (ICN) to SFO to CLE transit time enough?
    Jul 27, 2016
My family members would arrive from ICN (Korea) to SFO at 11:25 am, Saturday, July 30. They have 1 hours and 50 minutes for transfer to CLE departing at 1:17 pm on the same day. Would this transfer time be enough for their immigration, baggage claim, re-bagging, and security check? Their carrier is United all the way to Cleveland. I am very concerned......

Yes, that is enough time if everything goes smoothly.

    Jul 27, 2016
I am looking at booking a flight with United from YVR to OGG with a 53 minute layover at SFO. Once at SFO, do I need to go through security to get the connecting flight to OGG and is 53 sufficient time to get to the connecting flight?

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Vancouver. All you have to do in SFO is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time.

  • Honolulu > SFO > MUC
    Jul 27, 2016
I have a 1 hr 16 min layover on flight UA 1604 from Honolulu to SFO, and then SFO to Munich. Will there be enough time to get to the gate?? This is the ONLY connection that allows to to make another connection out of Munich. Thoughts?

Yes, that is enough time. All you have to do in SFO is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

  • United Domestic Connection
    Jul 26, 2016
United wants to route me from PHX to SFO to connect with one of their flights to Hawaii (LIH). My question is, if the Phoenix flight is scheduled to depart at 7AM and arrive in SFO at 8:01AM, would I have enough time to make the connection to the 9:00AM United flight to Hawaii (59 mins)? Seems tight.

Yes, that is enough time. All you have to do in SFO is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.
