  • Local to International layover United

Great site.. I am trying to book from LAX- SFO - AKL (Auckland) all ticketed through United. We want to take flight 917 SFO-AKL. The first flight from LAX options are a 1 hour or two hour layover. Can you confirm my suspicion that one hour is too short. I assume we will have bagage ticketed through, but will need to clear immigration and security out. Thanks

1 Hour is possible. There is no US Immigration or any special security when leaving the US. All you have to do in SFO is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. That being, said, I'd probably book the 2 hour connection.

We have a 1.5hr layover in SFO from YVR before departing for IAH; is that enough time? We'll have a carry-on with us, do we have to go through customs or security check again? Thanks in advance

Sorry, I should add that we're arriving from YVR via Air Canada, and our SFO-IAH-BEZ legs are UA. (no checked bags)

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Vancouver. If you arrive in concourse A of the International Terminal you will have to go through security again but if you arrive in concourse G you will not. Air Canada uses both concourses.

we are flying from Sydney to San Francisco with air New Zealand and arrive at 12.45pm then have to fly to Calgary international on United flight leaves at 3.20pm. Do we have to check our bags again and go through security and do you think we will have enough time

Yes, you will arrive in the International Terminal, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go to Terminal 3, through security, and to your departure gate. You should have enough time.

Hi, I will be arriving on a qantas flight from sydney and connecting to a air canada flight to vancouver. They are on seperate tickets so bags not checked through. Will I have to go through immigration / customs and then come back through security to check in for the flight to vancouver? How long would this likely take? thanks for your help

Yes, you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then take your bags to the Air Canada desk, check them, and go through security and to your departure gate. I recommend at least 3 hours between flights.

  • Qantas to AA connection time?
    Apr 8, 2016

Hi, I will be arriving at SFO from Australia at 9:30am and would like to get a domestic American Airlines flight at 11:20am. This will be on a different ticket, but both are oneworld alliance airlines. Will there be enough time? How long does it take to clear SFO Intl and get to the domestic AA terminal?

That would be barely enough time if everything went perfectly and Qantas tags your bags through to AA. It's not difficult in terms of distance. It's just that you'll have to wait in two fairly long lines (Immigration and security).

Thanks, I think it will be tight, but it sounds like I can make it if Qantas can tag my bags through to AA. I've also been told SFO now has the Automated Passport Control Kiosks which should help me skip the long Immigration lines.

Flying Air NZ from Australia to New York with connecting flight (Virgin) at SFO, all on one reservation. Transit time is 1hr 45min - is this enough time to get through customs to make the connecting flight?

That's barely enough time if everything goes perfectly.

I'm will be arriving on SQ2 at 9.15pm. Will I make it in time for a UA flight out to LAS at 10.35pm? Luggage will be tag to LAS.

That's 10 minutes shorter than the minimum International to Domestic connection time at SFO. So it will be very difficult.

Considering a flight to LAS from IAD, with a 39 minute connection in SFO. No checked bags. Would 39 minutes be enough?

    On what airline?

    United

It's possible, but it doesn't leave much time to spare if the flight from Vegas is delayed.

Arriving 9:15 pm on Hawaiian departing 10:06 pm on Virgin America. Do I have to go thru security again and do I have enough time to make the connection?

Yes, you will arrive in the International Terminal and depart from Terminal 2. They are not connected inside security. I do not think you have enough time.

Flying in from Tokyo to terminal 1 with ANA then going to terminal 3 to salt lake with United, do I have to back through security if I have checked baggage or is the baggage pick up inside security? 2 hours enough time?

You will arrive in the International Terminal, not Terminal 1. After you go through immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, and re-check you will be outside security. You have to go back through security to get to your departure gate. You should have enough time.

Booked the same ticket with United. Is 2 hr enough to go from United terminal 3 to Hawaii Airline terminal gate A ? If it is, should I use Airtrain or walk ? Thank you

It's probably fastest to walk. You will have to go through security again.

Is 2 hrs enough to walk from terminal 3, go thru security, then boarding Hawaii Airline at international gate A ? Thank you for your time.

Yes, that should be enough time.

  • Possible?

My husband is arriving on United from SLC at 3:00pm and has a Delta flight to LAX at 4:00. Is that a possible connection?

I would say that will be very difficult but not impossible. He will have to take AirTrain to Terminal 1 and go through security. With checked bags it would be impossible.

ORD to SFO Arriving 9:46pm, then SFO to SYD departing 11:00pm. Assuming flights are on time, is this doable? I don't think I'll need to do security again at SFO?

You have plenty of time. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. there is a walkway connecting Terminal 3 to United's gates in the International Terminal inside security.

  • Security "Again" When Arriving From Atlanta & Flying Out To PSP??
    Mar 22, 2016

I am flying into SFO on April 12th on Delta 1881. I then fly to PSP on Alaska. Last time I did this, I had to go through Security again and nearly missed my flight. Is it necessary to go through Security again when making this connection? I realise that Alaska flies out of the International Terminal, but????

Yes, the side of the International Terminal that Alaska uses is not connected to any other terminals inside security. If you don't like making this connection, don't book it.

Well GEE! I didn't make it. A friend in PSP made it for me on her air miles, and it's the only option. Sorry for my idiotic question! (apparently)

  • Transfer time international to domestic

I am arriving on Virgin atlantic from London with no bags at 1510 and transferring to fly to Los Angeles. Can I catch either an American Airlines of a Virgin America flight at 430 or should I wait till 6?

I would wait until 6. 80 minutes is pretty short for an International to Domestic connection, even with no bags.
