How much time should my daughter allow to change planes at SFO 1) arriving from Newark going to Sydney 2) arriving from Sydney going to Newark given TSA security issues and customs on the return?

On the way to Sydney, an hour is sufficient. On the way back from Sydney I'd want 3 hours.

We are flying into San Francisco Terminal 1 tomorrow on United arriving at 10:25 am and departing at 11:25 am for Honolulu on United at Terminal 3. Is this enough time for us and our bags? there are 5 of us including my partners 74 year old mother

United does not use Terminal 1 at SFO. All United flights are in Terminal 3 or the G concourse of the International Terminal and are connected inside security. where are you flying into SFO from?

Hi - I arrive on a flight from Auckland at 12.45pm on a weekday, landing at the international terminal and then connect through to Newark at 2.45pm from terminal 3. Is this enough time to get through customs and across to terminal 3? I'm on an Australian passport and last time I arrived in SFO the customs/immigration queue at that time of day took more than 1 hour and a quarter

that is barely enough time if everything goes smoothly. If you miss your connection, United has frequent flights to Newark.

    Thank you ZAP!

  • Time to take to book domestic flight

My wife & daughter will be coming in international flight to SFO from Abu dabhi which is scheduled to be arrived at 7:25AM. I need to book domestic flight from SFO to DAL. Could you please tell me how much time is typically required, assuming flight is on time, for booking the domestic flight. I may book non partnered flight of etihad.

They will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Abu Dhabi. I recommend at least 3 hours between flights in SFO.

Hi I'm flying domestic from Los Angeles to SFO on United airlines and will reach at about 5pm. On the same day, i have an international flight to Singapore at 11pm. I'm flying United Airlines for both and the 2 tickets are bought separately. I will have checked baggage. I suppose I will need to check out, collect my baggage and check in again for my flight to Sin. May i know if the duration is sufficient or i need to be back earlier? Thank you

If you call United they can join your two reservations together or you can show your confirmation to Singapore to the agent in LAX and your bags can be checked through to SIN. even if you have to claim your bags in between you have PLENTY of time.

I only have a 1 hour lay over flying into SFO from Calgary to catch a flight to LAX, will I clear customs in SFO and is that enough time

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Calgary. All you have to do in SFO is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate if both flights are on Air Canada/United. You have enough time.

Hi, I have two check-in luggages, one hand luggage and one backpack. My itinerary is from Calgary, AB, CA ~ SFO ~ Seoul, S.Korea. I will purchase the whole itinerary from Aeroplan award. But in Aeroplan homepage, the schedule shows me that my connection time in SFO is only 1H10M. Since my flights are international and international, and I have lots of baggages, I'm afraid to miss the second flight. Is it possible to get on the plane in my case?

And I am a South Korean passport holder.

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Calgary. All you have to do in San Francisco is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. you have enough time.

I will be connected from PVR Mexico through SFO and on the Munich. I land in SFO at 7PM and connect to Munich at 845PM. I am a US Passport holder and will not be checking a bag. Is this enough time?

That should be just enough time if everything goes perfectly.

I am flying from BOS to LAX and have a connection in SFO. I need to arrive at LAX earlier than the layover would allow, so I want to book a separate flight from SFO to LAX. If my flight from BOS to SFO lands in Terminal 2 at 11:05am, would I have enough time to make a 12pm flight leaving from Terminal 1? I won't have any checked bags, just my carry-on. Thanks for your help!

That would still be difficult because you will have to go through security again in Terminal 1.

I am travelling from Toronto to San Fran (Air Canada) and then onto Sydney (Qantas). My Toronto flight arrives in at 21:27 and my Sydney flight leaves at: 23:25. Can you let me know of this is adequate time?

Are they on one reservation or two separate reservations? Do you have checked bags?

They are on different tickets. I am likely to have one checked bag although I might be able to travel lightly if this likely to be a problem.

You should have enough time. No checked bags will make it one less thing to worry about. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto so that also helps.

Thanks SO much, sincerely appreciated :)

I am travelling from HNL arriving at 7:54pm. and departing to Denver at 8:29pm. Its all on one ticket and I'll only have my carry on, no checked bags. IS that likely to be enough time to get from one gate to the other?

Yes, as long as your flight from Honolulu is on-time that is possible.

I'll be arriving at SFO on a Virgin Atlantic flight at 15.10 on Thurs 11th August, inbound from LHR travelling on a UK passport, & connecting with an Alaska Airlines flight to SEA scheduled at 18.05 – is that ample time to clear immigration, then check in & sort out baggage & security for the ongoing flight?

Yes, that should be enough time if your flight from London is on-time.

I'll be arriving at SFO at 9:15am/United (Wednesday) and will have to catch an international flight to ICN at 11:20am/United-- (2 separate reservations).. will I have enough time to pick up my luggage, recheck-in, and go through security... ?

If you show your second reservation to the United agent in Washington then they can check your bags through to Seoul, in which case you have enough time and only will have to walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. Otherwise, this will be difficult, but not impossible.
