Hi, I am looking into a flight from Toronto (YYZ) to SFO, and then from SFO to Tapei. The layover time between the first flight and the second flight is only 1 HR. Is it secure to book this flight? YYZ - SFO is operated by Air Canada. SFO - TPE is operated by ANA

Will you be purchasing the tickets together? ANA does not fly SFO-TPE nonstop, so that segment will actually be operated by United. You will pre-clear US Immigration and customs in Toronto, so all you will have to do in San Francisco is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate which will both be in the G concourse of the International Terminal. Yes, that should be enough time.

yes. my ticket is YYZ - TPE. you are right, the flight from SFO-TPE is with United. Great to hear reassurance from you ZAP, cuz you seem to know what you are talking about :D

Is 30 min enough layover time to make the transfer at sfo with only carryon

Yes, that should be enough time if your first flight is on-time. The gates for both flights should also be located very near each other.

I am flying with 2 children and 2 adults from Calgary to SFO then to Sydney Australia. Bookings have only allowed for 1hr 51 min stopover. Will I make my connection to Sydney with this amount of time. Will I need to get my checked luggage and recheck it in SFO?

Yes, that should be enough time. If both of your flights are on United then all you have to do in SFO is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You will pre-clear US Immigration and customs in Calgary.

Awesome... apparently it is Air Canada 4022 Operated by UNITED EXPRESS/SKYWEST .... is that the same thing as United?

Yes, that flight will be operated by United (you will check your bags at the United counter in Calgary).

Flying into SFO from Kelowna(Canada) in March and have 2 hours before flight to Auckland - is that long enough? Do we have to clear customs and security in SFO?

Yes, you will arrive in the International Terminal, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then go through security in the same terminal and to your departure gate. You should have enough time.

I am flying into SFO from ICN via United at 1105am and I have a connecting flight to EWR via United at 110pm. The layover is about 2 hrs 5mins. Is there enough time?

Yes, that should be enough time.

  • BOS --> SFO --> Auk, NZ and return... Min layover recommended?

I'm flying roundtrip BOS-SFO-AUK in May on Air NZ but the US domestic leg is operated by United. Some options allow only 1.5hrs connection in SFO. I'm concerned that it may not be enough, ESPECIALLY on the return if I have to go through immigration at SFO. What should I look for as minimum layover times for both outbound and return? Thanks, Carlos

On the way there an hour should be sufficient. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. Terminal 3 where you arrive and concourse G of the International Terminal where you depart are connected inside security by a walkway. On the return I would look for 1.5-2 hours since you will have to go through Immigration, customs, and security in SFO.

  • London to SFO Terminal 1 then SFO to Auckland New Zealand

Is 2h 25min enough time to connect. Do I have to clear US customs? On a BA flight in and then Air New Zealand out

You will not arrive in Terminal 1. You will arrive in concourse A of the International Terminal. When there you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, and go through US Customs. If you purchased your tickets together and your bags are tagged through to New Zealand, you can re-check your bags at the transfer desk. Otherwise, you will have to take your bags to the departure level and the Air New Zealand check-in counter to re-check them. Your ANZ flight will depart from the G concourse of the International Terminal. You should have enough time but do not have much time to spare in case of delays on your inbound flight.

Also, you will have to go through security after your bags are re-checked before your departing flight.

We're planning a trip from London to San Francisco then getting a connecting flight to San Diego. Is 1hr 40 enough time? Do we need to collect our bags and then check in again and SFO?

Yes, that should be enough time. You will have to claim your bags after you go through Immigration, then go through US Customs, then re-check them at the transfer desk when you are in San Francisco.

Flying into SFO from Reno in July via United and wonder if 1 hour is enough time to make AirCanada flight to Toronto?

Yes, that should be enough time. Any checked bags would be transferred and you just have to walk from Terminal 3 where you arrive to International concourse G where you will depart. They are connected inside security by a walkway.

Hi, I'm flying from Denver to SFO on United then to Dublin on Aer Lingus...the current flight has a layover just under 2 hours. Is this enough time? Will I need to recheck my bags since it's a different airline? Thanks!

If you purchased your tickets together your bags will be transferred automatically and you only have to walk from your arrival gate in Terminal 3 to your departure gate in the G concourse of the International terminal. There is a walkway connecting the two inside security.

Hi, I'm flying from Vancouver to Hong Kong and need to transfer flight from SFO (by Air Canada to arrive at Terminal I at 10:17, by United Airline to depart at Terminal I 12:50). Do I need to check baggage again?

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Vancouver. If you booked your tickets together you should not have to claim your bags in SFO - just walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

  • 2 minute layover

i just booked a flight from LA to vancouver. and stopping over in SFO. it says the layover is 2 minutes . both at terminal 3 though. is this even possible. ive never been to sfo. thankyou

No, 2 minutes is not possible. It should not have allowed you to book that ticket. You need to rebook it, likely with an earlier flight to SFO.

  • Flying from Shanghai thru San Fran on United - connection time needed?
    Jan 20, 2015

United changed a flight I had booked from Shanghai through SFO to Fort Lauderdale. Now I have a 3 leg flight and trying to make it shorter. Is 90 minutes enough time to get thru customs, etc in SFO if I get on another United flight? I would be flying to Orlando. Thanks!

That would be barely enough time.

I am flying delta from Minneapolis to SFO then a 2 hour layover before I fly air New Zealand to Auckland. Will I have to get my bags and recheck them at SFO as well as go through customs? Or will Delta send me bags all the way through to Auckland

Did you buy your tickets together or separately. If together then your bags will be sent straight through to Auckland. If separately, then you will have to claim them and take them to the ANZ check in counter in the International Terminal. You do not go through US Customs when leaving the US.

  • Can I stay with my sister before she goes to transfer?

My sister and I am coming from Korea to SFO but I go to school in berkeley and my sister need to go NYC. I want to stay around 2 hours with her. I wish to know what are the difference between the route for me and my sister so that I can prepare what ways I should go with her and not go with her.

I forgot to mention that she is using United Airline for both to go San Francisco and to JFK

You will both arrive in the International Terminal, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, and go through US Customs, then your sister will re-check her bags at the transfer desk. You will then be outside the secure area. Your sister will have to go through security to get to her flight to NY. She should head through security at least 45 minutes before her flight, you can hang out with her outside security until then.
