Hi, we are flying to Newark from Sydney with a 1.45min layover at SFO and I'm unsure of the process. Do we need to go through customs, claim our baggage and then recheck again on the flight to Newark? Both flights are with United Airlines and I'm concerned that 1.45min may not be enough time if we need to claim and recheck our baggage... thanks in advance

In SFO you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, and re-check your bags at the re-check desk with United. Then you will go through security and to your departure gate. 1:45 is enough time if your first flight is on-time and if you are delayed United has many flights from SFO to Newark.

    Thank you :)

Hello, I'll be flying from London to SFO and then to Hawaii. My connection time is 2 hours and 25min. Could you please help me understand the process of my time in San Francisco? I'll be flying United. Is the time allotted sufficient to clear customs? I'm planning to just bring 2 carry-on items and no checked luggage to avoid any waiting or time checking in luggage, but that'll be tough with all the gifts I plan to bring back, but anything to make sure I can make it to work on time the next day! Thank you so much for your help!

If you are bringing 2 carry ons, one will have to fit under the seat in front of you. Yes, 2 hr 25 minutes should be enough time. You will arrive in the International Terminal, clear US Immigration, claim your checked bags, if you have some, then clear US Customs, then re-check your bags, then go to the departure level and through security and to your departure gate to Hawaii, which will be attached to the International Terminal in Terminal 3. If you want to buy a bag in Hawaii to check on your way back, feel free to because on your way back you will not have to claim your bags in SFO or go through any of those procedures, they will be checked straight through to London.

Thank you so much for your reply! I'm sorry, but I wasn't clear about my situation. I'm vacationing in London and the connection I'm worried about is when going home to Hawaii. Do you think even with checked luggage, I'd have trouble making my flight in SFO?

2 hrs 25 mins should be enough time for your connection.

Hi, I need to purchase a ticket to fly from Philly to Sydney, Australia. One of my options is through SFO with 1hour layover. Otherwise, I have to transfer twice with about 90- 120 min layovers each. First, I don't need to go through a security checkpoint for this transfer (SFO), right? If so, I know 1h is not enough. Any input would be appreciated. But still, I usually ask for 2 hour layover for an international and this seems little too short.

If both flights are on United you will not have to go through security in SFO. 1 hour should be enough time if your first flight is on-time.

No, the walkway between those two terminals runs outside security.

I will be flying rom SNA john Wayne airport to HNL. Transfer in SFO. there is less than an hour between arrival and departure of flights in SFO. Is that enough time to make the transfer.

Yes, if both of your flights are on United that should be enough time.

  • Arrive T3 (United), Depart International (Cathay) - Time Needed?

Hello, Will be arriving 10.30am from Las Vegas on United (internal flight). Then have to collect baggage > exit terminal > get to the International terminal > check-in > clear security for a 13.45 Departure to Hong Kong (Cathay). Is 3 hours enough time to comfortably do this (even with delays) or better to get an earlier flight from Vegas (with 5 hr wait between flights)? Many Thanks!

That should be plenty of time.

Hi - I am flying from London to Vegas (single ticket) with a transfer at SFO. I was wondering what I would need to to do at SFO to successfully transfer to the next flight (2 hours between flights). Will I need to depart immigration and collect bags and recheck in at United Airlines desk or is there a better way?

Yes, you have the procedure correct. The purpose of claiming the bags is to go through US Customs. After you re-check your bags you will go through security.

Hi, my husband and I are looking into book a flight from Vancouver Canada to Lihue Hawaii. All would be booked with united and we would clear customs in Vancouver prior to take off. They are stating a 44 min connection time in between. If we went straight from plane to plane would we be alright? I have made 40 min connection in Seattle before but am not familiar with San Fran airport. Many thanks.

Yes, San Francisco is a little more delay prone butt the process would be the same. All United gates at SFO are connected inside security.

I am flying from Amsterdam (KLM) and arrival 1245 at SFO and goes to Las Vegas with United airlines 4.18 pm and most checked bags first? and the bags are not paid for. Would i have enough time, and what are the best why to do trip.

Did you purchase your tickets separately or together. If purchased separately you will have to take your bags from the International Terminal to Terminal 3 via the Airtrain, then take them to the United counter to check to Las Vegas and pay a checked bag fee. If you did purchase your tickets together you will be able to re-check after customs as your bags will be tagged through to LAS.

I am flying from Burbank CA to SFO by United. Arrival time at SFO will be 3.15 PM. Dept time of Airlingus is 5.20 PM. Also I have checked bag that I assume will go directly (golf bag). Would I have enough time ?

Yes, that should be plenty of time. There is even a secure walkway between United's gates and the International terminal. If tickets were purchased together your bag will be transferred automatically.

Out of curiosity, what is the min amount time needed to catch the flight in SFO ? Let say if there is flight delay.

    probably 15-20 minutes

  • Time needed from terminal 3 to International terminal

I will be transferring from United in terminal 3 to an International flight to London on United. I originally had just over 2 hours but now see that they've changed my arriving flight and now only have 75 minutes. Is this enough time? Can I go directly to the international terminal without having to pass through security again? Going through security could take precious time. Should I book an earlier flight into SFO?

Yes, there is a walkway between T3 and the International Terminal inside security. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

  • International to domestic transfer

Hi! I will be flying to SFO from Singapore via an international flight Singapore Airlines. I have a domestic flight (united airlines) to catch approximately 2 hours later. I would like to know if 2 hours is sufficient time. What is the fastest way to get from flight to flight (including checking in again)? Thank you for any help!

Edit: Domestic flight from SFO to DEN via United Airlines

2 hours should be sufficient time. You should make sure your bags are tagged through to DEN by the SQ agent in Singapore. When you arrive in SFO you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, and go through US Customs, then re-check your bags with United. Then you will go up to the departure level, get your United boarding pass if you don't already have it, and go through security and to your departure gate. The United gates are connected to the International Terminal by a walkway inside security.

  • LAS-SFO-ICN Virgin to Singapore Airlines; 1:20min layover

Hello and thanks for any help! I am flying from Vegas to San Fran on United, and switching from Virgin to Singapore Airlines for a flight to Seoul Korea (ICN). Never flown thru SFO...do Virgin and Singapore have a sea where I can have all my tickets/checked baggage good to go? Or is 1:20 min not going to be enough??? Thanks!

SORRY!!!... typo: Vegas to San Fran on VIRGIN!!! my bass... =/

Virgin America and Singapore Airlines do have an interline agreement, so if you show your SQ confirmation to the Virgin agent in Las Vegas you should be able to have your bags transferred to Singapore and you won't have to do anything with them in SFO. You will just have to go from your arrival terminal to the International Terminal, get your Singapore boarding passes if you don't already have them, and go through security. 1:20 will still be difficult to do all that.

Hi there, we are flying ICN-SFO (United) arr 11:30am connecting to SFO-YYC (WestJet) dep 2:00 WITH DOG (Westjet desk is aisle 6 international terminal) The SFO-YYC passenger is not US citizen so must go through all the checks and everything. Will he have enough time, including re-checking in the dog for the

With the dog, it will be very difficult.

It depends what airline your first ticket is on. If they have a close relationship with AA, that agent may be willing to tag your bag through to AA if you show your AA confirmation or boarding pass. If so, then you can re-check your bags in T5. Otherwise you will have to take them on the ATS to Terminal 3 to check them with AA.

I'll be coming in on SAS..how do I find out if they have a close relationship with AA.... and thanks for the information
