  • Domestic to International Flight

I'm arriving via UA (Skywest - United Express) from Oregon to SFO to catch a connection to a UA flight to Bangkok. Will I have to go through immigrations/customs and recheck my bags when I arrive? And how can I determine which terminal my Oregon to SFO flight will arrive at? (My flight to Bangkok leaves from terminal 1 according to my eticket)

There is no US Immigration and Customs when departing the United States. You will arrive in Terminal 3 and depart from the G Concourse of the International Terminal (that's an I, not a 1). All you have to do in SFO is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly! Much appreciated...I seldom travel and I'm traveling alone...overseas for the first time, so it's nice to hear that the connection in SFO will be relatively simple. Thank you again!

  • Sydney to Chicago through SFO

I'm traveling from Sydney to Chicago with a 2 hour layover in SFO. Will I have to clear customs, claim my bag, then recheck and go through security again in SFO? Is 2 hours enough time? What if I don't check any bags? Can I walk right to the next flight or will I need to leave and renter? Flying United

Yes, in SFO you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk and go through security. If you don't check bags you still have to go through US Immigration, customs, and security. 2 hours is enough time.

  • Layover at SFO (United)

Hi there. I will be flying San Diego (SAN) to Vancouver BC (YVR) via SFO next month. Both flights are on United. I have 2 options: a 45min layover, or a 2hr layover... Will 45mins be enough time since both flights are United, and they're on the same ticket? Does United operate in one terminal for both domestic and Canadian flights? Never flown through SFO, thanks guys!

Arrive from SAN (United) in Terminal 2... Flight to YVR leaves SFO (United) from the Main Terminal. Enough time? Its a 45 min layover vs a 2 hr layover.

You have your terminals a bit mixed up. Both flights will be in Terminal 3 at SFO. All you have to do in SFO is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. 45 minutes is possible but 2 hours is much less risky.

  • Las Vegas - San Francisco - Abu Dhabi

I am arriving to San Francisco Airport coming from Las Vegas at 07:39am (United Airlines). Then I need to claim my checked baggages and take an international flight to Dubai (Etihad Airlines) at 09:45am. The tickets are separate. Do you think it is doable given that there are only 2 hours difference between my domestic and internal flight?

It's barely enough time if your first flight is on-time.

  • LAS (LH9213) - SFO (LH455) - FRA connection : 1hr

I have a connection at SFO for my onward flight to Frankfurt. LAS (LH9213) - SFO (arrives at SFO 2:05pm) SFO (LH455) - FRA (depart from SFO 3:05pm) For the last 4 days, LH9213 (code share with united) is arriving 2-3 hours delayed. This is happening due to weather condition on SFO. I booked this ticket through an agent and its a non-refundable/non-changeable ticket. I called Lufthansa, they said they cannot change anything. I called United, they said since its Lufthansa ticket they cannot do anything. At this point, what are my options ? Who do I need to contact if my flight gets delayed when leaving from Las Vegas ?

On the day of your flight if it is delayed you will contact the check in agent, gate agent, or united reservations and ask to be rebooked through another United hub.

  • From Delta Terminal 1 to United Terminal 3
    Dec 21, 2015

I am arriving around 11:30 on January 5, 2016 on Delta terminal 1, I will be carrying on so I will have no bags to check. But I need to terminal 3 as I have a united flight around 4:30pm. Can I walk from terminal 1 to 3. If so how long is the walk?

You can walk, but it's marginally faster to take the airtrain. It will take you about 10 or 15 minutes to get to T3 and then you will have to go through security. You have plenty of time.

  • Traveling on two separate bookings

I am flying on Delta to SFO from Detroit on a separate ticket. I am flying Air New Zealand to Auckland from the International terminal. Will Delta check my baggage to Auckland or will I have to collect my baggage and recheck it to Auckland? If I do, can I do this without having to reclear security?

No, Delta does not check bags through to other airlines when you purchase two separate reservations. YOu will have to claim your bags from Delta, take them to the International Terminal, re-check them and go through security.

    Thank you!

  • Process getting from international terminal to domestic terminal

I am arriving Monday at 11:05am from Japan and departing to OHare at 1:25pm. Both flights are United. I know I can check in 24 hours ahead for my Japan to SFO leg, but that take care of the SFO to OHare leg? Both legs are on the same ticket. Also, will there be enough time to make that connection, assuming the flight from Japan is on time?

Yes, that should be enough time. You get both boarding passes when you check in for your first flight. You will arrive in the International Terminal, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go through security and to your departure gate.

  • LAX thru SFO to HK -- where do I clear customs
    Dec 17, 2015

United Express from LAX to SFO; United to Hong Kong (Jan 1, 2016); where do we clear customs in US? If clearance is in SFO, how long will we need (arrive SFO 1050am; depart 130pm)

You don't clear Customs in the US. There is no US Customs when leaving the US. you will go through Hong Kong immigration and customs when you get to Hong Kong. All you have to do in SFO is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

Thank you. Very much appreciate the quick response. R

  • Enough time for next flight?
    Dec 17, 2015

Hi All, I am flying in to SFO at the International Terminal and am looking to book a next flight out to DC on United Air. I am touching down SFO at 12:34pm and I have 2 options for the flight to DC at 3:34pm or 4:51pm. My last time in SFO, I remembered the customs line was pretty long...Will I have enough time to catch the 3:34pm? Is it easier to walk to the Domestic terminal than taking the airport tram? Thanks!!

Either flight should work - you have quite a bit of time either way. Yes, since the International Terminal is right next to Terminal 3 it is fastest to walk.

Thanks ZAP! Do I check in my luggage at UA counter in terminal 3? Was confused with the recheck counter I see in other posts.

It sounds like you're purchasing two separate tickets on two separate reservations. If that's the case, yes, you will bring your bags to the United check-in desk in Terminal 3.

Yes 2 separate bookings. So 3 hours will still be enough time? Thanks for your help!

Yes, it should be enough time.

  • Domestic to International Connection

I am flying into SFO from Baltimore and connection to fly to Osaka. I have 1 hour and 35 minute layover. Will this be enough time? Will I have to recheck my bags and go through security? I'm landing in terminal 1 and flying out of terminal 3.

Correction: I'm actually flying into terminal 3 and out of the International terminal.

There's no US Customs when leaving the US. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate if both tickets are on the same reservation. T3 and the Google concourse of the international terminal are connected inside security.

  • 90 min layover in SFO, enough time for connecting flight?
    Dec 12, 2015

Hello, i'll be arriving in SFO at around 21:15 (on a Monday night) on a Singapore Airlines flight from Singapore. I'm considering taking the 22:45 connecting flight to Orlando. Will i have enough time? This is the last direct non-stop flight to Orlando, i'm really hoping i can make it instead of taking a non-direct flight or the next direct flight which is next morning at 8am! Thanks

On two separate reservations that would be very difficult, if not impossible. It might be possible without checked bags.

  • YVR to ATL Layover at SFO
    Dec 10, 2015

Going from YVR Vancouver, Canada to Atlanta, on United. A layover of 1 hour 35 min at SFO in late evening.. Will I have to pick up my checked luggages to recheck the bags? Will I be going through security again? Is that layover time enough or a little too rush?

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Vancouver. All you have to do in San Francisco is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have plenty of time.

  • INC - SFO - ORD

Hello, I'm having a layover at SFO for about 1 and a half hour, arriving from Incheon (Seoul). Is that time enough for me to depart to O'Hare (Chicago)? How far will the gate be to depart from my arrival gate? Will I have to recheck my baggage? Thank you!

Sorry i forgot to mention; I'm flying united in both international and domestic

You will arrive in the International terminal, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags, Walk to Terminal 3 and go through security and to your departure gate. You should have just about enough time. If your flight is late and you miss it, United has pretty much hourly flights from SFO to ORD that you can be rebooked on.

    Thank you

  • How long?
    Dec 10, 2015

I'm flying into SFO on a international flight with United. My flight is scheduled to land at 11:30 am and my connecting flight takes off at 12:55 pm. How long does it usually take to get from the international terminal to the united domestic terminal after customs, baggage and re-checking in? Also is it better to walk to United domestic or take the tram?

It's best to walk. 85 minutes is 5 minutes shorter than the recommended International to domestic connection time at SFO. Where are you flying to on your domestic flight?

My domestic flight is to Las Vegas. I figured that once I get off the plane I will be moving pretty fast to get checked into my next gate and if I'm running a little late I will ask them to call the gate and let them know I'm on the way.

They won't call the gate. You will already be checked in for both flights. However, you will have to go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, and go through security.
