  • 1hour and 30min layover time
    Oct 20, 2014
Hi - I am flying from Hong Kong - Las Vegas. I am wondering if 1hour and 30min is enough time taking the whole recheck-in in consideration? FYI it is UNITED both ways. On the way to Vegas I'll be in SFO from 8.30am-10am and return flight from 11.55am-13.25pm. Will I have enough time? Thanks

Yes, that should be enough time. On your way to Las Vegas, in SFO you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags with United, then go through security and to your departure gate. On you way back to Hong Kong, all you have to do in SFO is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. There is a walkway connecting Terminal 3 where you will likely arrive and the G concourse of the International Terminal where you will depart.

Thank you so much, this is super helpful. Have a great day!

  • Terminal 1 to Terminal International
    Oct 19, 2014
Hi there, Coming in on a flight from MSP next month and into Terminal 1. My flight to PSP leaves from the International Terminal. I only have an hour in between. Flights all booked via Alaska Air, but MSP to SFO flight is on Delta, and SFO to PSP flight is Alaska Air. Fastest way from T1 to TI...walk or train? And, do I have to go thru Security again ? Thanks very much.

It's probably slightly faster to take the train. Yes, you will have to go through security again in the International Terminal.

    Thanks for your response!

  • 1hr 35mins transit time sufficient?
    Oct 18, 2014
Hi there, i am planning to fly in to San Francisco from Seoul on Asiana and will be touching down at 1220 but my next connecting domestic flight with United Airline will be taking off at 1355 which means i have only a 1hr 35mins transit time. I would like to hear from frequent travellers if it will be even possible to go thru all the procedures and make it to the flight. I am travelling with my wife and 2 kids aged 3 and 4 years old respectively. Luggage count will be 8 checked-in in total. Both me and my wife will be holding A2 visa, will that help to expedite the process? If i have no choice but to stick to this plan, can anyone advise me what can i do to speed up the whole process? Eg will informing San Fran staff for help be useful?

You should have enough time. There is nothing you can do to speed up the process other than to sit as far towards the front of the plane as possible and moving as quickly as you can.

  • United connection between Intl and Terminal 3
    Oct 15, 2014
Is 50 mins enough time to get from the INTL terminal( on a domestic flight) and Terminal 3, Concourse F? How long will it take to walk (run) and do I have to go thru security again?

There is a walkway between the International Terminal and Terminal 3 inside security. You should have plenty of time if your first flight is on-time.

Is 37 minutes enough time to change from one United domestic flight to another in Terminal 3? If my plane is 10 minutes late, is 27 minutes enough?

Yes, both of those should be enough time.

  • Connecting flight on UA to Seoul
    Oct 9, 2014
Flying in to SFO from Boston on United, I only have 1 hour 10 minutes to connect flight at SFO to S Korea (also on United). Do I have to clear security again? Do I have enough time to connect flight? Thanks much,

No, you will not have to go through security. The United Terminal and their gates in the International Terminal are connected inside security by a walkway. You should have enough time.

  • MAN-SFO (Air France), SFO-YVR (United)... is 3 hours enough?
    Oct 8, 2014
Hi, I plan to fly into SFO from the UK on Air France, arriving at 1pm, and want to take a United flight to YVR 3 hours later. I'm booking these as two completely separate flights so will have to collect my luggage, I assume I'll also have to clear customs and check my luggage in for the second flight at the main check-in desks? Is 3 hours is enough time for this or I should take a later flight to be sure? Thanks!

Yes, you have it correct. Yes, 3 hours should be enough time. It's a fairly easy walk from where you will exit customs to the United Check-In counters.

  • International connection
    Oct 8, 2014
Arriving from YLW to SFO with United, connecting to ZRH with Swiss - Do I really have to go through customs even though I am not entering the USA? - 2h connection time, does this sound doable with 2 kids?

Yes, you do have to go through US Immigration, claim your bags, and go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk. 2 Hours should be enough time. Everything will be in the same terminal.

  • Transfer from United to ANA, security? is 1:20 enough time?
    Oct 6, 2014
Flying United domestic flight to SFO to connect to an ANA flight to Tokyo. We have 1:20 layover. Do we have to change terminals? Do we have to go through security? Thanks.

You may have to change terminals, but there is a walkway inside security between United's Terminal and the International terminal, so you should have enough time and you won't have to go through security.

  • Virgin America, is 30 minute layover enough?
    Oct 3, 2014
I am booking on Virgin America from JFK - SFO and connecting with a flight SFO - PDX. Virgin booking is giving me a ticket with a 30 minute layover at SFO....Is that realistic? Can I make a connection (same airline) in 30 minutes? Here are the times Virgin comes up with: http://screencast.com/t/vokJ31b23H1 Thanks!

It's certainly possible, but if there are ANY delays longer than 10-15 minutes you will be spending the night in San Francisco.

  • YYZ to SFO
    Sep 21, 2014
Hello, My husband and I are flying in on Air Canada to San Francisco as a stop on our way to Hawaii. I booked the flight with 1 stop (SFO) and we will be transferring to United. We have a 9Hour stopover, will our bags be transferred or will we have to claim them and re check in? Thanks!

If you bought your tickets together and your connection isn't overnight, your bags will be transferred.

  • SYD-SFO-NEWARK Concerned!
    Sep 17, 2014
Hi, we are flying to Newark from Sydney with a 1.45min layover at SFO and I'm unsure of the process. Do we need to go through customs, claim our baggage and then recheck again on the flight to Newark? Both flights are with United Airlines and I'm concerned that 1.45min may not be enough time if we need to claim and recheck our baggage... thanks in advance

In SFO you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, and re-check your bags at the re-check desk with United. Then you will go through security and to your departure gate. 1:45 is enough time if your first flight is on-time and if you are delayed United has many flights from SFO to Newark.

    Thank you :)

  • worried about customs

Hello, I'll be flying from London to SFO and then to Hawaii. My connection time is 2 hours and 25min. Could you please help me understand the process of my time in San Francisco? I'll be flying United. Is the time allotted sufficient to clear customs? I'm planning to just bring 2 carry-on items and no checked luggage to avoid any waiting or time checking in luggage, but that'll be tough with all the gifts I plan to bring back, but anything to make sure I can make it to work on time the next day! Thank you so much for your help!

If you are bringing 2 carry ons, one will have to fit under the seat in front of you. Yes, 2 hr 25 minutes should be enough time. You will arrive in the International Terminal, clear US Immigration, claim your checked bags, if you have some, then clear US Customs, then re-check your bags, then go to the departure level and through security and to your departure gate to Hawaii, which will be attached to the International Terminal in Terminal 3. If you want to buy a bag in Hawaii to check on your way back, feel free to because on your way back you will not have to claim your bags in SFO or go through any of those procedures, they will be checked straight through to London.

Thank you so much for your reply! I'm sorry, but I wasn't clear about my situation. I'm vacationing in London and the connection I'm worried about is when going home to Hawaii. Do you think even with checked luggage, I'd have trouble making my flight in SFO?

2 hrs 25 mins should be enough time for your connection.

  • PHL-SFO-SYD (United)
    Sep 9, 2014
Hi, I need to purchase a ticket to fly from Philly to Sydney, Australia. One of my options is through SFO with 1hour layover. Otherwise, I have to transfer twice with about 90- 120 min layovers each. First, I don't need to go through a security checkpoint for this transfer (SFO), right? If so, I know 1h is not enough. Any input would be appreciated. But still, I usually ask for 2 hour layover for an international and this seems little too short.

If both flights are on United you will not have to go through security in SFO. 1 hour should be enough time if your first flight is on-time.

  • Can one go from Terminal 2 to 3 without exiting/reentering security?

Can one go from Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 without exiting/reentering security?

No, the walkway between those two terminals runs outside security.
